Edited by: Farjung on 20/02/2007 23:04:58 Last Saturday, on a little tour of our regions, at one point we found ourselves on the gate to 1-NJLK, the entrance to the Mercenary Coalition constellation in Period Basis. Hearing reports of a battle in progress on the other side, we jumped in only to find the field was mostly clear and a malevolent black cloud was filling our screens. While most of the fleet was protected by the jump-in cloak/lag, one of my alts, Callenthia, was one of the unfortunate ones that loaded quickly and started aligning, only to completely lock up when others started decloaking. The result, one dead muninn.
...
This morning I woke up to intel that AAA were going to be withdrawing from their staging location inside the MC constellation and coming up to Delve to keep us company. The timing was interesting; we had hostile POS to siege in the evening in 9CG-, a system in Querious that is in titan jump bridge range of YZ9-, AAA's new declared staging system. So, we were anticipating that around the time the two POS we had to siege in 9CG- came out of reinforced, we might see some AAA movement in our general direction. With that in mind, and hearing reports that AAA were regularly fielding fleets of 80+ battleships, I decided to prepare a little surprise for them on the route to YZ9-. The system before YZ9- on their route, 319-3D, was in jump range of the current location of one of our titan pilots, Shrike. I moved two cynosural generating characters to 319-3D and a covert ops character to watch the route leading to 319-3D, while Othnark moved his cloaked interdictor to 319 and a rapier to YZ9, and our bait, Douphal, in a tanked armageddon, was moved to YZ9-. With a couple more covert ops characters floating around, the trap was set.
As 19:00 approached, hostile count in 1-NJLK started going through the roof, reaching about 130. A spattering of capitals, along with 80 or so battleships and 40 support, started heading towards YZ9-. Meanwhile the BoB capitals were finishing off the first of the RZR towers to come out of reinforced in 9CG-, and getting ready to siege the second. Intel kept flowing from Mercenary Coalition scouts as the AAA fleet started progressing up the pipe from Period Basis to Delve, and the few pilots stationed around 319- waited anxiously as the hostiles moved ever closer. The second RZR tower was destroyed, and plans were made to start sieging one more tower to reinforced mode.
When the hostile fleet reached PF-KUQ, a mid-point between 1-NJLK and YZ9-, they paused to move their capital ships up. Evil Thug logged on in his Erebus and we started to fear the worst - maybe he'd jump to PF-KUQ and bridge his fleet directly to YZ9, completely by-passing our trap a mere one jump away. Sure enough, a cynosural field went up in YZ9, but Othnark snuck in like a ninja and nuked the cyno ship with his rapier before most of the AAA capital fleet had jumped. In response, AAA sent up most of their support from PF-KUQ to protect the next cyno ship in YZ9, and the observers in 319 watched patiently as they passed through. A second cyno went up in YZ9-, but by this point we had discovered that Evil Thug was no longer on-line, so fears of AAA bridging their whole fleet to YZ9- were laid to rest. After a few carriers jumped through, the support fleet stopped camping the cyno and regrouped on the 319- gate. Scouts reported that the 80 strong AAA battleship fleet had started rolling from PF-KUQ once more, and once again it looked like we were good to go. --- Wave of Mutilation 2 |

As the hostile battleships flooded into GY6A-, one jump before our target system, our bait ship moved into position in YZ9, getting ready to warp to the 319- gate and jump in. With the hostile battleships dropping out on the 319- gate in GY6A-, our tanked Armageddon pilot landed on the 319- gate in YZ9- in the middle of ~30 hostile support. While he was waiting for a portion of them to aggress on him, a hostile interdictor jumped ahead of him into 319-, re-approached the gate and dropped an interdictor bubble. Douphal jumped in and held cloak as long as possible, as local in 319- started filling up from both sides, the GY6A- side with hostile battleships, the 319- side with support craft. Meanwhile our interdictor and cyno pilots watched, and waited - the interdictor pilot seemingly redundant now as his job had been done for him by an AAA pilot- for the hostile battleship fleet to arrive at the gate, displaced from jump range by their own interdictor bubble. As Douphal's jump-in cloak expired, the hostile support pounced on him and started chewing him up.
With the hostile fleet in the middle of their 60 AU warp, Farjung fired his cynosural field at a friendly POS allow Shrike to jump into system. As the hostile battleships started appearing on grid at the target gate, Ericka decloaked 220km from them in a tanked drake, and lit her own cynosural field. Channeling Judgement through the cynosural field a couple of hundred kilometres above them, Shrike incinerated about half the hostile battleship fleet as they dropped out of warp, bathed in glowing white light and unable to do anything to escape their fate.
Friendly losses:
1 Battleship 1 Battlecruiser + pod
Hostile losses:
42 Battleships 12 Support
Not really a battle per se, as 99% of the action happened in the space of 15 seconds, but it was a tense couple of hours as we discussed what could go wrong, and kept trying to second-guess AAA's movements. The end result was rather good though :D. --- Wave of Mutilation 2 |

Very nice writeup. Dianabolic should take some tips from you. You don't need a snide comment at the end of ever BoB statement, and this thread is proof.
It's a good start to getting people to root for you again.

Oh well i guess thats just the way the game is going anymore.

*zing*
Think about the direction you are sending EvE in yourself Dirtball. 5 solokills in privateers all in a sleipnir, 3 haulers, one inty and a dessie. You are nothing more than a t2 empire ganker. I'm not criticizing it, you are entitled to your playstyle but don't throw stones in glass houses and all that.

Nice write up and well executed.
I still think titans are a really stupid idea that are going to kill the game a la Planetside. You spend at least a couple of hours a piece to get the ships fitted and in position to all get fried in 1 second from 1 button click. Waste of time and no fun. .

Indeed another example of how things usually doesn't turn out like CCP planned I guess.
Although imo that might be a good thing. That you "can't" gangwarp or jump(through a gate) your whole fleet at once is quite an awesome way for anti-blob mechanics. But that kinda requires that every entity capable of fielding a "fleet" also can field a titan to keep it level.
On the story, I gotta say good job. And the write-up was alot better than the usual bob-smack as well, so two thumbs up. Though, I also couldn't help checking the killboards to see what parts of AAA that you nuked (and ofc I hope they'll bounce back and kick your ***). Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

*shrugs* I am not even involved, I dont care who gets fried particularly I just think titans are a bad thing for the game as a whole, I like to see fleet battles 9when the server can handle them which isnt often) not POS crap and titans wiping out 100 ppls evening at the flick of a button.
It killed planetside and will do the same to eve.
edit: plus the "stop blobbing" comment is just silly, you can take out a well defended pos system without heavily outnumbering your opponent so you have no choice other than to blob.
Anyway, sorry to derail.

Im just wondering, you said shrike jumped in then fired the DD... how much cap does the DD take?
I would have thought that after the 75% cap lost from the jump he would have had to wait to use the DD... but from the sound of the action i must be wrong..

They had a 60 AU warp and if setup right the Avatar has one of the best cap recharges due to the 7.5% cap recharge per level bonus. Mix that with some Chelm Cap Rechargers and 3 CCC II's shouldn't take long. ----------
