THANK GOD SOMEONE SAID GWAR.
If you get a chance to go to one rock show before you die, make it a GWAR show. OMFG. It's amazing.
Wear white.
Also, to this list, I add Darkest Hour and DragonForce. Both of which also put on a good live show. I've seen Darkest Hour at AlleyCatz (or whatever it's called this week) in Richmond, VA, and let me tell you... if you wanna get your face rocked out, do it. They don't crowd serf. The kids get on stage, they start running towards the audience, and they don't stop when the stage ends.
Amazing.
But, lately I've been listening to a bunch of Ska anyway. Arrogant sons of *****es and Bomb the music industry for the win, along with Big D and the Kids' Table.

...ish.
I haven't seen them in about 2 years or so, but before I got married and had a kid, I was at every gwar show on the us east coast. They still play, but Brockie is getting old - he's over 40 now. I did meet up with him at a DBX show in Richmond once, though, and I got him to draw me an Oderus... which I then got tattoo'd on my arm.
Woot. I love gwar. Scumdogs of the Universe is one of the best metal albums ever.

For myself, there are a few favs...
Rhapsody (no called Rhapsody Of Fire I think) - their CDs seem to be one, long, epic story in the vein of Lord Of The Rings.
Nightwish - Their 'Tenth Man Down' and 'End of All Hope' are the definitive songs for my Battletech games.
Within Temptation - While I didn't like their 'Enter' CD, 'Mother Earth' and 'Silent Force' definitely rank in my upper 5!
Queensryche - Their earlier CDS such as 'Warning', 'Empire', 'Operation Mindcrime', and most of all 'Rage For Order'. Tend to avoid the newer stuff as it seems they lost their inspriation about or after 'Promised Land'.
Gamma Ray/Iron Savior - Great Sci-Fi metal (Iron Savior is apparently a side project or alternate name for Gamma Ray, and follows a storyline about what amounts to a sentient Titan from ancient Atlantis.
ManoWar - When I'm feeling particularly bloodthirsty!
Metallica - What can you say? The One Ring of Metal music. 'One' has to be on every Metal fan's playlist!
Iced Earth - If they taught History like this band did in their three-song 'Gettysburgh' peice, I'd have never forgot the stuff!
Tons of other, single-song favorites (Drowning Pool's 'Bodies', ect.), but it's hard for me to like a Band, because I tend to listen to individual songs. The one's above are or were consistently my favorites, tho.

Yeah, if you like Rhapsody (of fire), you'd like luca turelli's solo stuff, which is a bit avant guarde, but still good, and you'd definately like Dragonforce.
I mean: In what universe does this not rock?
Awesome live show, too. They are one of those bands that's constantly thrilled to be on stage in front of people who came to see them, it's really still cool how much they love their fans. Anyone who saw Greenday prior to 1994 knows what I mean - same thing, it's like they can't believe these people showed up to see them, and it makes for a really good show. Also dragonforce are usually pretty drunk. Seems to make them play better.

One group I didn't add because I'm not sure they are Metal, and are more of a group project of sorts is Star One. As far as I know, they only have one CD they put out, but if you love Sci Fi, this is one CD for you. Most (if not all) the songs are about Sci Fi shows/movies.

I'm bit of a drifter in that I have no certain favorite.
Anyways. Currently actively listening to:
Steel Prophet Iron Maiden ain't got jack on 'em!
Enola Gay Yes. I bypassed the profanity filter. Bite me! It's a name of an airplane!
Holy Mother Good old heavy metal at it's best. What more can one wish for?
Shadow Gallery Easily on par with Dream Theater if not better; they don't have the sort of guitarwork that DT has but vocals are more enjoyable and songs are more varied.
Judas Priest If I need to comment, this is not the thread you are looking for.
