Well, I WAS having a lot of fun in this game... finished the tutorial mission, had just made enough isk to buy myself a nice shiny new Rifter. So I am in the middle of a mission (from the first contact after tutorial contact) and suddenly I get disconnected (Connection to server lost). No biggy, I had JUST killed the last of the enemies, so I knew I wasn't gonna die, and the connection's here can be flaky sometimes, so I go to login again... and this is what I get:
While we appreciate your enthusiasm to try Eve, we would also appreciate it if you could limit yourself to using one trial account at a time.
What the hell? I only have ONE account... and this is it. I saw some issues with people who have paying accounts not being able to use trials while searching the forums, but I DON'T have a paying account yet.
If this is the kind of stuff I can expect (randomly locked out of game? ) CCP can forget about me paying for this. My account shows active, trial expires 03/something/2007.
Anyone have any ideas, or any Customer Service people who can help me out here?

no do not expect this behavior unless you ebay.
more then likely someone with a similar IP address was on.(any roomates play Eve by chance) if you email a petition(file under stuck id say) they should be able to help you out and hopefully reimburse you for the time locked out on the trial account.
TBH CCP seems to be one of the best customer service teams i have seen for MMORGS.

No, no roommates. Everyone in this entire area has a similar IP address (same class c subnet), so I hope that isn't it. I honestly can't think why this would happen... and why it happened just as I started to get into the game too. I'll email them if I can find the address I need I guess.
Ridiculous system if someone else in about a 60 mile radius logging in triggers a lockout.

No, it only has problems with NAT'd users not Class C subnet Or Qwest users; there's a Qwest server in San Jose that doesn't like EVE (my brother hasn't been able to access his account since before D2 attacked ISS)...
My best guess as to what happened is that you:
A: had your client do an ungraceful disconnect from the server B: tried to login C: had the server say "wait a second, that character is already logged in, there's a problem here" because the server still showed you as logged in (I've had my computer crash, reboot and fired up EVE again before the server realizes I'm gone) [right after you log in, it kicks you out] ...
good thing I wasn't the one tanking (L4 Gurista's Extravaganza)!
In any case, I'd try relogging now, then file a stuck petition if it doesn't work [because you could be on a "2-trial-account" list]

Did you try restarting your PC ? Depending on how they detect an account running, their may be a process or memory address still in use. PC error, not Eve Error. ______________________________

Edited by: Ariest Mal on 23/02/2007 06:30:55 Well I guess that that was what happened, Sheva. I just tried logging in and was able to , even though the petition I filed earlier is still open. I AM on a router, and I did try to log back in immediately. If I should get disconnected again, how long should I wait before trying to log back in? I don't want to get locked out for at least 4 hours (that's how long I tried to log in before giving up, about once every 30-45 minutes) every time I drop a packet or something...
Oh and Syph, I highly doubt that there is a stray process running. I am running Linux, and when I quit a game, my wineserver process stops, killing any and all sub-processes that ran under it (ie, anything game-related) and freeing the memory up.
Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

When you lose connection to the game, your client should restart. Wait a few seconds to see if Eve launches before you try to manually launch it again. This would result in two copies of Eve running. So on a crash/disconnect just go get a cup of coffee then come back and try again.

just try in a few minutes again.
cause you lost connection your char is still on the server.
and having others playing eve on the same IP is no problem.
i have running up to 3 players at the same time playing eve using same IP.

There is a difference with trial and fully paid accounts. You can not run a trial account along side any other account (paid or trial) at the same time from the same connection.
For this players problem it is likely he tried a little too quickly or he had two copies of the client up at once and didn't realize it.

wrong. you can run at least 2 trial accounts on same IP, but not same computer.
3 weeks ago i startet eve again with 2 trial accounts, on same IP but with 2 computers (NAT routing) then i payed 1 account, and coudnt pay second do to messed eve homepage, i had to continue with 1 payed and 1 trial account, and now both are payed. and when my m8 is at my home he also plays eve on a 3th pc same ip.
this works totaly fine.

OK this is getting ridiculous. I keep getting randomly disconnected, about once every 2 hours or so. No big deal, except that EVERY time this happens, I can't log back in for almost an hour at LEAST.
All I get are the "While we appreciate blah blah blah" BS.
This system is not workable. |

That message only pops up on trial accounts. But whatever is causing it I don't know. IMO don't play an mmo like this if you cannot have stable enough internet, as one day you could lose an expensive ship due to a disconnect (although there are systems built in to save it) . --------------

You may want to look in your Task Manager process list to see if there's a phantom or ghost EVE process running. I believe the client checks to see if it's a trial account and if there are any other instances of EVE running. If there's a ghost process, it will find it and give that error.
The other recourse would be to either exit your Windows session or reboot after you get disconnected.

Edited by: Ariest Mal on 24/02/2007 13:52:24 LOL Gornax, I like your sig, and it's appropriate, since as I said above... I'm not using Windows. Windows isn't on my machine. At all. And Cedega doesn't leave any "ghost processes" running; Once the wineserver is shut down, that's it. No more EVE processes running.
And my Internet connection is stable enough. No problems with any other MMO, or any online game for that matter.
I caused a client crash by changing a graphics option 2 days ago by purposely setting a mode my hardware doesn't support, and was able to jump right back in. This ONLY happens when I get the disconnected from server message. The server doesn't register that I'm not there anymore for upwards of an hour for some reason, and keeps telling me to only use one trial account; irritating, to say the least.
I updated my router firmware yesterday. We'll see if maybe that helps. My gaming machine (this Linux box) was already DMZ, so it's most likely not a port issue. I have a DLINK EBR-2310, and one of the firmware notes has improved port forwarding. Maybe this will clear it up. I know that setting port forwarding while still in DMZ seemed to cause more frequent disconnects. If anyone else has this router and has experienced issues with disconnects that they have resolved, please let me know.
Just have to wait and see what happens, I guess.

Seeing as Eve isn't 100% supported for linux ( if it was you would get a linux client ) that may just cause issues. No clue how well linux looks after memory or how well you emulation keeps it free of clutter, you may have just ran into a address that was still populated by the game crashing. ______________________________
