My guess is that some parts of Eve are a batch process and DT is a way to change a large number of records with out having to worry about transaction locks effecting player experince. "Reboot" is probably a misnomer. Nodes of the cluster are probably taken offline, upgraded, patched, poked all the time and we simply don't know any better.

maybe it's an extension of the "node crashing" "tactic" :p
except this one brings down the whole server.
Seriously though someone needs a trout slapping, I blame microsoft, but then I do for most things.

This is slighly reminiscent of the good old days when the only online games were MUDs. I remember this particular day when the MUD I was playing went down for the weekend for no apparent reason. On the third day we got a startup message similar to this:
"We're sorry about the weekend of downtime, one of our Mods tripped over the internet cable on his way out on friday and the rest of us were busy at <gaming convention> this weekend."
I know it's not the same problem here, but I thought that was a classic moment that I had to share.

Check the message on the login screen. It's only been an hour and already they know that "We have are having issues with the startup." Another hour or two and maybe they'll have narrowed it down to being a software problem.

The real reason for locating in Iceland is that they never buy hardware, they use the cold weather to overclock their systems leaving the computers outside. And this issues are typical overclocking/humidity issues...
