Since Revelations, we've seen ECM jammers become basically useless on any ship that doesn't have a bonus to them. At the same time, we've begun to see just how powerful sensor dampers are; some of us have know about this for a while, others were pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised by it.
Since that point, we've begun to see the exact same thing that was happening with ECM jammers happen with sensor dampers: everyone and their brother seems to be flying with one or two fitted, resulting in pretty much the exact same situation you'd get with ECM jammers pre-patch. As CCP has, by the very fact of the ECM nerf, stated that they don't want that to be happening, I say it's time to nerf sensor dampers.
Yep, that's right - nerf damps. Put them in the same category as ECM jammers by making them largely useless on any ship that doesn't have a bonus to their use. The rest should be pretty much self-explanatory. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"

But remember to keep tracking disruptors powerful on any ship, of course!

Edited by: Trillian Mcmillan on 26/02/2007 21:37:48 Personally i dont think dampeners need any nerfing.
However...
I used to fly ECM ships (as in the dedicated variety).
The nerfbat hit me hard... I am now bitter and disgruntled so i support nerfing the crap out of dampeners as well.
While were at it... I have been recently using tracking disruptors on non dedicated ships to great effect. Please nerf them as well.
/sarcasm off
Stop nerfing everything please.

In truth, those should be nerfed on anything without a bonus to their effectiveness, too. For that matter, for balance' sake, so should target painters (not that TP are all that useful in most situations, anyway, but it's the principle of the matter).
However, this is a thread to discuss a nerf to damps and damps only. If we drag the other forms of EW into it, it will clutter the discussion. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"

Then why did you name your post "EW Nerfage"?
P.S. Leave Damps alone...

You need 3-4 sensor damps to solo against a BS. With pre-nerf ECM, you could be effective with half that number of modules. Sensor damps are fine.

No, I don't think its a fair comparison.
With dampeners you need atleast 2 or 3 to have any true effect in the range that most fights take place. The problem with ECM was someone could just throw a multispec on any ship and it would greatly streathen your chances.

However much I want to disagree, its undeniable that sensor damps are now the new "this goes in any spare med slots I may have on all my ships" module.
The problem is if we go down the road of making ALL forms of electronic warfare racial, we remove a lot of unpredictability from our setups.
There, I just contributed nothing to this thread.

Edited by: Kruel on 26/02/2007 22:23:12 Sensor boosters counter damps better than eccm countered ecm prenerf. Also like others have mentioned you need at least 2 or 3 to be effective, and that's just vs one ship. You can't stick em on multiple targets and nullify them all (like I used to do in my Domi ).

ffs, don't nerf damps, what am I gonna fit to my scorpion afterwards now that ecm sucks????
/sarcasm deactivateed I.e.: If CCP doesn't want anyone using EW, they should never have introduced it. What's the point in using modules and then just nerfing them so hard that any other module would do better?

atleast you can counter damp and you could only barely counter the uber multispec of doom.
and no i havent been damped by maller or absolutions so im pretty confident the damps are not like ECM. _________________________________________________ Breetime

Damps are just fine. You need 2-3 just to make much difference. Even then they are really only good for support ships like the Celestis. They are fairly easy to counter as well since most folks use a sensor booster.

If you have room for 2-3 damps they can be very effecient even on non-damperner ships, though. I have a curse setup with 3 which in can kill more or less anything which is not faster. You can also use a similar huginn/rapier setup which can kill anything which cannot permatank it.
Utterly useless if you cannot stack them though. IMO they are a bit to strong on non-specced ships with enough meds. But compared to the uber-multipsec of doom it's no major imbalance. It's still there of cource.
But TDs...please... There is a *slight* difference between modules (ECM and damps) which disable guns, missiles, nos, ECM, SDs, TDs, webs, scramblers and are limiting drones and one module which disables large and some med guns (assuming you are not double webbed).

You can counter both tracking disrupts and damps with mods, the problem with ecm is the counter just made the chances better...and nobody likes a chance based system __________________________________________ Yes it is great being amarr. |

If the gang has just one Gallente recon with them they can easy make some targets 100% jammed. Another thing is damping a carrier to 14km lockrange - that just doesnt work
I support nerfing things where you in PVP will have to sit and wait to die - as its not pvp in my eyes tbh

Okay, so we've established that they're an effective module, but we've also established that they have *several counter-modules*. You could bring your own sensor-booster to counter the Gallente recon. Damps shouldn't be nerfed just because people lack the foresight to have countermeasures ready.

ECCM mods were boosted considerably to counter ECM, then ECM was nerfed.
Sensor damps are strong, but I wouldn't mind it if there was an effective way to counter them. Sensor boosters are a weak counter, mostly due to the way positive and negative bonuses work. A negative bonus is at least twice as powerful as positive bonus.
Maybe CCP should just add some special feature to sensor boosters that would reduce the effect of negative sensor bonuses?

The major problem with sensor dampeners is that they can't reach those long-distance locking sniper ships that needs to be dampened, and they can easily dampen ships close range that in most cases don't bother much (except when a ship goes for a Gallente ship's drones when oponent damps and recalls drones)
Atm they are sometimes crazily powerfull, but generally they are not a full scale problem like the ECM was...
