Wine works fine for me, but i have a flickering cursor if i move it. If i let it rest, it will stop flickering after some time ....
Any ideas what that could be ?

Originally by: Eleftheria Hi. Just installed wine-0.9.45 in Ubuntu 7.04. I copied the arial.ttf font to the "c:\windows\fonts" of wine and the game is totally playable with no visible artifacts or jump/dock issues. The framerate is acceptable with a Sempron 3000, nvidia 7600gs and 2 gigs ram. I also run the game from an NTFS partition (not that it makes a difference). All the sound options are ON. I use the 32bit version of Linux and wine.
Just spreading the word
AM2 A64 X2 5600+, 8800GTS, Ubuntu x86-64, Wine 0.9.45 (x86-64): Works perfectly!
Well, not quite, the mouse cursor is still scrambled, and if hardware-accelerated sound is on I get no sound. But it seems I don't need to manually disable eve-voice for it to start without crashing.

Hello,
I am getting splash & crash with wine 0.9.45 and Radeon IGP 320 video card (Compaq EVO N1015v notebook here)
When i turn some debuging on in wine i get these errors on ExeFile.exe when executing wine EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe /nosplash /noconsole:

i have opensource ATI drivers installed, glxgears runs fine in fullscreen here, EVE has sound disabled and arial32 fonts setup is installed. Here is my setup script as well:

Do i miss something here to run EVE? it runs in WindowsXP by the way. And when tried wine 0.9.41 i get weird black window instead of login screen.
Somebody help me, please :)

Driver "ati" works for me on my laptop, albeit at a hideous frame rate...
Still no luck solving the hideous text problems with 0.9.45, so still soundless running .44.

Ok, i tried fglrx (ati-8.39.4-1plf2007.1 package for my Mandriva 2007.1) from ATI, this time eve started up but Xorg has Direct rendering disabled because Xorg DRI fails to setup interface so it runs like 0.01 FPS I tried everything to get it running, but had no luck to get it working properly. glxgears shows up like 180FPS when actually it is slideshow on screen. The setup was fglrx module for kernel and radeon (not ati!) driver for Xorg. If i try load up fglrx for Xorg, it says "no device found".
Also, i came back to opensource setup, loaded up drm,ati_agp,agpgart and radeon modules. At this time DRI is enabled and glxgears runs fine without slideshow but.. wine + directx fails again
Now i am stuck in drivers configuration hell just to get 3D acceleration running fine and EVE on top. Any more ideas which i could test?

I had similar experience back when I was forced to drop Win98. I went and bought a Geforce on recommendation and bam it worked first try.

I just tried a bit crazy idea - disabled Direct Rendering on opensource ATI drivers and wohaa! EVE got running like it did with closed source drivers. Just wine now floods complains about emulating OpenGL unsuppoted functions. So, seems all mess is somethere with wine D3D part, not with video drivers itself! Btw, when DRI is enabled, i run Armagetron linux game(OpenGL) in fullscreen with 25-40 FPS...

Very interesting. You may be in luck though, but just not "yet". ATI's new 8.41 driver is out, and they indicate that the performance boosts in that driver will get filtered to their "main" driver for other cards in the next month or so. (currently the 8.41 is very limited to just a few cards.)

The problem is - fglrx DOES NOT support DRI in Mobility IGP 320M card on Xorg. You cannot use current and new ATI closed source drivers for loading fglrx as Xorg video driver - it just does not include that card and gives error when loaded. It resides as kernel module only and drm module conflicts with it. And when loading opensource radeon/ati Xorg video drivers on top of fglrx Xorg does not have accel.

when Vivox supports the Cedega client. Not saying this isnt in the works, though. CCP has stated on many occasions: One Shard One Client (or equal QoS for all, at the least.)

Edited by: LTcyberT1000 on 27/09/2007 15:30:05 I tested again EVE+wine in my notebook and got LogServer logs for sofware mode
http://www.itgamos.lt/~arunasp/eve-noaccell.lbw
and accel mode(when crash):
www.itgamos.lt/~arunasp/eve-crash.lbw
Just to note, your life can be made alot easer when trying to run EVE Online in graphics software emulation mode when putting Open GL variable right before wine:
export WINEPREFIX=/path/to/fakewin LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 cd /path/to/eve wine /path/to/eve/eve.exe
Just keep in mind, if your xorg will lockup with this, read this link: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=215021 My own bang was solved when setting AIGLX off in xorg.conf.
If EVE starts up in software emulation mode then there is only DRI part left. This will solve much troubles for starting game up at all.
Hope someone could tell me now where problem with acceleration is?

I tried EVE Voice under Wine the other day for the heck of it...
I was pleasantly surprised that having voice enabled no longer causes the client to crash. I was able to join voice on chat channels and listen to other people, however, they could not hear me. And after a few minutes I would be kicked off voice in all but one channel. I checked the log and couldn't find any obvious reason.
Though that fact that it is at least partially usable is promising and makes me think that CCP, Transgaming, and Vivox might actually get a working solution soon.

same text bug here as already described. some of the text looks like a highly compressed jpg and is unreadable. i also have random pictures from eve cache wrapped around the text.
the text problem occures here: - input fields - chat windows (funny thing: always just the newest entry) - parts of the escape menu (some readable text gets readable and vice versa when changing settings) - password field on the log in screen is totally f* up
market, wallet, char sheet works fine so it seems to be a problem of instantly generated text.
i'm running eve on a asus s6f laptop with onboard intel graphics so the frame rate is bad outside stations. no probs inside stations. flying around is possible (good fps in space when alone, about 1 fps outside rens). map is fine. the overall response time of the client feels faster for example when updating market orders compared to my desktop WinXP machine (which has a dual boot just for eve )

Ummm perhaps a silly notion here but why not just create a version of EVE specificaly designed for linux ?
On an other note though, its really cool to see at least some support from the devs.

They are "kind of" going to create a linux version of eve.
Wine/Cedega have two modes of operation, running a windows program on linux, and using them to compile the source of a windows program into a native linux executable. The only real difference is the first needs the user to set up Wine/Cedega (user does the work), and the second needs the game devs to recompile the game and QA it (company does the work).
The features they support, speed and the bugs are nearly identical both ways, so by working with Cedega to get eve working in the compatibility mode they get to create a native linux version with the second option later.

First off, for the searchers, I've got Eve running on Wine 0.9.46 using Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) following these instructions:-
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=558791
It doesn't like beryl, and it doesn't like windowed, but I am happy enough to be free of Vista.
On the performance front, on my Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E, that came crippled with Vista, well, guess what, Eve with Wine and Linux is actually faster. Much faster, as in 'I can get into a battle with this'.
Rather than: actually, I'd better not do that on this laptop 'cos the lag is so bad.
I can't tell you all how happy I am to finally have the last reason for running windows removed from my radar. I'm not a Linux fanboy, but Vista has been so rubbish I did a bit of Googling, and Ubuntu is just so much better for day to day stuff. Eve was the last obstacle.
Cheers,
Mike.

I got eve running on both my linux boxes now. (debian etch, gnome) The performance is pretty good I must say, better then in previous attempts I made. I still need to see how combat works but I must say I am very pleased to see most is working correctly (pretty damn good)
I downloaded the latest wine source and compiled it using the provided tool. I had to copy the arial fonts to the .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory because of the black login screen issue and then I gave it a go
running fullscreen with the wine setting that the default windowmanager is to be used puts the panels above the eve window witch isn't useful. instead I am using the emulate a virtual desktop setting using a custom resolution a little lower then my screen resolution. Also there are some minor graphics issues here and there like icons not displaying the picture correctly and the spacer in the in-space context menu is not there (between stargates and my places).
I am using compiz fusion and that is giving me no problems at all. One machine has a intel core duo and a intel chipset motherboard with a nvidia graphics card, the other machine has an amd processor and a nforce2 chipset and also a nvidia graphics card. those 2 machines are good hardware platforms for any linux box imho
I am sure that me running eve on linux now has to do with the efforts made by ccp and the wine/transgaming team and I want to thank them for that and I am eagerly looking forward how this will progress in the future.

Hello.
I recently started playing eve-online again, but now I have a problem. Suddenly eve can start to "race" (I have no better term for it), the ingame clock and the graphics starts to move way to fast and after a while it crashes with a bad file descriptor error. I'll post the entire error message when I get eve to start again.
The same thing can happen at the log-in screen, now as I'm typing this the login screen says STATUS:OK (checked 1year 11months.... ago) this can't be normal... If I try to login while in this state I get a connection time out.
I don't have any similar problems in any other opengl/d3d game/application.
I'm using gentoo and wine, with wine and drivers up to date.
Hopefully someone has some idea of what can be wrong.

there is also cpusets, a kernel function that allows you to make "sets" of applications that you wish to run on certain cpus.
http://www.bullopensource.org/cpuset/cpuset.html
a buddy of mine even made a ruby 'frontend' of sorts to manage cpusets...

My mousecursor flickers when i move it - in wine and in cedega :( Eve ist playable, but that flickering annoys the hell out of me !
I read that it could have something to do with the new 100-series of Nvidia drivers, but i have found no solution :(
If i set HWcursor = 0 in xorg.conf i have a completely garbled mousecursor, so that does not help either.
Any ideads how to fix this ? _____

just in passing . EVE runs quite well on the latest version of CrossOver for linux. there are some glitches with some of the graphics that show up in the journal/missions and map graphics functions seem to cause some problem. the game is very playable (even for a noob:), full screened or windowed. i would think it can handle multiple clients??
amd+nvidia graphics.
