going to keep this short, I think hauling contracts should have their collateral capped to between 0%-25% above the estimated cost of the goods based on current market values.
What would this change do ?
- It would bring most hauling contracts into a price range that would allow more haulers to pick them up.
- There would be more haulers in space which in turn would mean more potential targets for opportunistic players.
- With more haulers in space hauling, things would get to where their going faster, contracts wouldn't languish for weeks before some one picked it up.
- Pirates would need to offer up something of value to tempt a hauler in, this gives the pirate some much needed risk while still letting them set the collat at 25% giving them +25% profit if they kill the hauler.
I get that the people listing false contracts are instantly going to flame/troll/try and negate this, but as a game mechanic and design choice which would benefit the game and the players, I think its a good idea.
More haulers, more targets should compensate for the far fewer targets with 1 big pay day.

The estimated cost is often wrong and for a significant amount of items non existent.
Further, the proposed change would not result in any of your bullet points.

Speaking as someone who regularly uses hauling contracts with muti billion ISK collateral,
hell no.
0% above the value is an invitation to steal my ****.
25% above the value is nothing like enough incentive for your average freighter pilot to actually pay attention, and if they lose my ****, then getting back 25% over what I paid means I'm still down a lot of ISK on what I should be making, and now I've lost a load of time too.
I list legitimate contracts. I hate this idea.
(For example, the last load I had moved had a 7 bil collateral on it. It was delivered within the hour.) |

@OP - Please tell us how much you lost to the over-collateralized load of junk you got scammed into trying to deliver.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.

Tell me... why would I want to complete a courier contract if the value of the stuff I am hauling is more than that which I put down as collateral?
I would simply break open the "plastic wrap" and take the stuff inside. If that is no longer allowed... I would sit on the item until the person who made the contract finally gives up and deletes the contract (in which case, the wrapping disappears and I have the stuff).

Some items don't have a market value and are only traded via contracts, how do you value those items for the purposes of your cap?
A contract is binding, if you don't like the terms you don't accept it; I set a +50% collateral for my contracts, if people fail to deliver I expect to be compensated for the inconvenience and the loss of my materials or profit. I never have a problem getting them picked up by independents if I have a long lead tine, or if I want it fast and an almost 100% guaranteed delivery I use the pros.

If there are more haulers in space, and they're getting killed, there'll be more ranty posts in GD and C&D about how the removal of cargo and pods from ships via the application of brute force shouldn't be allowed, especially in hisec, and that people who do it are suffering from a variety of mental illnesses and aren't safe to be around.

If collateral were capped I would never contract another shipment to Red Frog again. I am failing to see how the title of this idea: "Should Hauling get some love?" could remotely be considered as giving hauling some love.
Ultimately, you undermine professional haulers with this idea and hurt people who rely on collateral to cover any loss of the haul to safely transport goods by third parties. It also incentivizes people to break delivery contracts to turn and sell the items themselves.

I already contract my stuff at a reasonable rate for a reasonable reward. I want my stuff moved in a timely manner, and thats the best way to do it. I often laugh at people who shortchange their haulers and wait days to get anything moved. If this was put in place, issues would arrise with high value items, that don't have enough volume to come up with a valid price (i.e. an officer mod that is not on the market at all). |

IF the concern is related to false contracts then you never, ever ship a delivery contract with a character in the same Corp/Alliance/naming scheme as the Character you accepted the contract with... and avoid named double wrapped packages, they just scream: SCAM.
