Iv recently started working with Maya and its the first such program of this nature iv used. Im definitely interested in purchasing it soon. However iv noticed that Maya and 3DS Max(havnt tried this yet) seem to be used for the same thing.
If anyone could tell me the difference between these two programs i would appreciate it as to me they seem to do identical work.
Cheers

They are pretty much the same thing and getting the "samer" every day as Autodesk *makes 3dStudio* bought Alias (makes Maya) not long ago.. so they are basicly the same.. just have different uses and coding so there are some rendering and modeling and animation differences.. way too many to list.
Either one will work.. both are complicated to learn and you must have hella deep pockets cause they are both in the thousands of dollars to purchase.

K, thanks.... Think i will go with MAYA though, from what im hearing it will be the main app for this sort of thing in the future, although that is one stupidly high price tag

You may want to give this a look, especially when dealing with the other's "costs":

Edited by: Apewall on 07/03/2007 19:37:21 They are both comparable in features now, mainly the difference you will see will be in Maya MELScript and the interfaces.
Maya was previously on Linux but if I remember correctly once it was purchased by autodesk the support has either dropped or fell behind.
Autodesk has discounts for students available through student retail stores. If you can go this route: Maya Complete - $300.00 U.S. Maya Unlimited - $400.00 U.S. 3d studio Max - $200.00 U.S. (One year license.)
I personally use Maya for most of my work.
Programs like Blender have made leaps and bounds, and is choice especially for people unable to pay out the high cost for the business versions of other 3d programs, but it still lacks many of the features packed into them.
