More maps = win.
Nice that you've gone a different route to the one taken by Joshua and the Goons.
Definitely keep it updated. I might stick links to all the maps in my sig, since we're getting so many these days. --------

I don't think it works like that, mate. If you want that part of the map, you've got to have more sovereignty than anyone else. If you don't got it, the map maker isn't going to change it --------

Originally by: Sovy Kurosei I really like this map, mostly because it is objective and it sounds like it is automated so it can be done more often then the map updates that Josh or the Goons do. There are some downsides to it like not knowing which regions are warzones or not which can only be covered with human intervention. Or would it, I wonder if you can use that map program once a day to detect the latest number of kills in the last twenty four hours over a week period and have it automatically label a region being a warzone or not, could you?
The good thing about having multiple maps is that you can always compare. This map is excellent for seeing simply who has sov / stations in which space, but, as you say, lacks conflict information. Both Josh's map and Goons' map have detail about conflicts (Josh has more detail about the small alliances, little details and such, while Goons has more info on the big campaign of the hour at the expense of smaller groups). On their own, all 3 have serious flaws. But looking at all 3, and you can get an excellent idea as to whats going on in the universe. --------

We claim the WXB-RY constellation
You really need to read the OP. The beauty of this map is that it displays in game facts .. not political contrivances.
This probably wouldn't be easy to do .. but if you could give your map a little memory .. as in graphicall represent the changes in influence from the previous map.
It's not a political contrivance, they have a station and pos's there. I lived in B-7 with them before invictus took over YM. I think he just missed the outpost.
It is a very interesting concept for a map though. I think it may be overweighting pos's though. One system with an outpost can easily control a couple neighboring constellations depending on the region's layout, while a pos may be just for moon mining and not reflect any real concentration of people in the area at all. As a result, the practical result may be different from the mathematically weighted result. For example, I think you may find, particularly in the new regions, that the "influence" of some of the entities you have there is considerably less than portrayed. I'd honestly stick to outpost systems in calculating this, with some very small % tossed in for pos's. You'd probably find that resulting in a more accurate map.
He didn't miss anything, he just fed in the game data. The reason they're not showing up is because they're being swamped by overwhelming "influence" of their neighbors, which is the map working as it should (if they don't have very many POS / Outpost compared to their neighbours, then its nice to see they're not a major power). If they really want to get on the map, they needc to bung down a few more POSs and outposts --------

Should check facts before smacking . . .
I'm not smacking, its true. If its mathematically generated based on POS numbers, and they're being swamped by their neighbours with more structures, then the only way to get them on the map would be to have more POS's.
And I find it useful to see who has the POS power on this map, as opposed to "political" power. We already have 2 political maps for that reference. If they have few enough starbases, comparatively, to be swamped by neighboring powers, then its an interesting fact to know.
Its a shame that its likely to bruise egos, but thats not a good reason to rehash the entire structure, by changing values or similar. --------

I second (third? Whatever) the motion that Xelas shouldn't be the same colour as BoB. The beauty of this map is that politics don't play any part- it JUST shows who has sovereignty where. Xelas do claim physical sovereignty, if not political, so you should be able to see them on the map. Make them a similar colour (maybe the same colour as FIX, to make it a uniform "BoB's residents / slaves / pets / insert name here" colour).
Don't surrender your allegiance to unbiased neutrality just because someone's asked
Also, KoS could do with a different colour. Can barely see it on the map. --------

Not that I want to be picky or anything, but now FLA has majority Sov in Cloud Ring, its screwed up the labels a bit; Freelancer Alliance is now plastered in the middle of D2 Pure Blind, and the Dusk And Dawn label is mostly in FLA's Dek space.
I don't know if thats something you can manually tweak for ease of reading. Not a big deal really, it just looks a bit silly --------

Theres a third way- ask. It might just be as simple as the fact as he emailed Wrangler or Kieron's address and said "hey I've got this great idea- can I have access to some data?", and they worked out a deal with him. They do that kind of thing all the time for community projects.
Heh, for all I know theres a fourth way of getting the data, all by yourself, without breaking the EULA. Won't know till he tells us, though --------

Originally by: Graalum somone raised this issue in another thread, on the stations in cloud ring. FLA held 2 of these, youwhat the third, but the region appeared to be overwhelmingly to be FLA dominated. I'm not sure what should be done to fix it or how, but one thought might be to make competing claims in various systems nullify eachother. For instance, if in a particular system there are 2 competing sovereigns, the one with say, 5 sovereignty points, and the other with three, instead of just showing the stronger sovereign at full strength, deduct the 3 points from the 5 to display a strength of 2.
Just a guess, but its probably because we've been spamming POS's like crazy. POS's are quite weighty on this map, so the fact that we have a lot more POS's is probably making us look more all-encompassing, despite only owning 2 of 3 stations. --------

Ok, seems that you have reading comprehension issues. Please re-read the part I wrote in my second point and that I have bolded for you - It is exactly what you just tried to explain.
I assumed, when you said "contacts", that you meant it in a "I have contacts in the police force", sort of way. As in, "I know someone there and have some influence", as opposed to "I looked up their phone number in the phone book".
And I was not flaming you- theres no need to get so smacktastic. We're only having an adult discussion --------

Oooh, ooh, I have a suggestion. The other day, there was a little rendering glitch in the Cloud ring bit of the map that showed FLA and -Y- sovereignty sort of intermingled on top of each other.
That could be a nice way of showing other strong Sov holders that are getting drowned out- have their plumes shown kinda cross hatched with the majority holder.
It might look butt fugly, but give it a go and see what you think, if its not too difficult. --------

I heard there is a bug which allows to claim sov. up to level 2 in NPC space. Not sure if it gives any bonuses or allow claiming stations.
OMG, I never even thought of that. If people can claim sovereignty, they can put up outpost eggs.
Might this bug lead us to the first player owned station in Empire space? --------

thx in advance
edit: yer, my english sux =P
You'd think the new API project would provide that information, although I don't know whether thats where Paladin gets his (this pre-dating the API project).
Other people (like Serenity Steele) use the same information in their own projects, so it must be easily obtainable. --------

Edited by: Patch86 on 10/08/2007 19:50:18 Your new colours look good, although theres still a little bit of confusion at the south / south east. TCF, Rise, and Digital Renegades all have very similar colours and are neighbouring, and similarly with United Legion and IAC. EDIT: Ethereal Dawn and Invictus. too.
I'd make that name label bug your priority. Some bits of the map are impossible to read if you don't already know who's there (like MC's northern holdings are completely unlabelled, since their label is lounging around in FIX's space). --------

The text is a known issue, I can't fix it on my own, I need either Paladin's newer code or a better coder than I to come up with an algorithm to deal with it.
Your experimental algorithm a day or so ago worked fairly nicely. I know it meant that the bigger alliances had about 5 copies of their name label on their larger clumps of territory, but I didn't think that was necessarily a bad thing. Was just more...thorough --------
