Very impressive map. The border "edge" line is also automatically calculated, I take it? Perhaps add a smoothing function to it for some of the outer most edges.
Very nice work, it's extremely impressive. Any chance you'll open source the code?
How often will you be updated it? __________________

I just read through the source and scanned the database. I'd know that data was available but never looked at it. Gives some nice insight. I haven't done any Java since college so I only have a rough idea of what's going on, but I like the math.
Try making a quick run with the sovereignty added to the image before the map. This will leave the smaller detail items on top of the larger color patches.
Also, perhaps adjust the nextColor function so that it runs from 256 to 64 or 128, instead of 256 to 0. This should push the colors for each alliance out farther towards their borders, unless I'm wrong about the code. ;P
Again, nice job, great concept and execution. CCP should make a web based version of this that queries the live database every hour, and caches the output to their webserver.

The changes look great so far.
Please try flipping your code around so that the sovereignty influence colors are drawn before the map. This will allow the systems and jumps to be clearly visible even in claimed system.
And perhaps a light color for empire/npc claims?
Awesome work. CCP, take his program and make it run on your server every day! __________________

I particularly like the use of only the in-game information for creating it.
It's made me ponder other ways I could use the map data.
Serenity, any word on the hard copy map? __________________

It looks great Paladin. I've bookmarked it and will be referring back to it regularly!
Now just a matter of getting enough "frames" to make an animation of influence over time. I can't wait!

At the very least make them a different shade of blue.
I concur, don't let politics enter into this map design or it'll become biased like the others. It's nice to know who feeds the towers in a region, not who "lays claim" on COAD.
