Before I logged in this morning I watched an episode of my much loved show South Park. This was a new episode where the boys are playing an MMORPG. At first look I got extremely excited watching and wanted to go play mineąeve. But on a closer look a lot of problems grew to my attention.
1, Stan and the rest of the boys became obsessed with their game not leaving the house for weeks at end eating nothing but junk food.
2, The unhealthy life style that comes with not moving far from a chair staring at a screen all day.
3, The arrogance that comes with being good at something and having power in this game.
4, The fact that when you leave the game you still think about it and canĘt generally wait to play it again.
Although MMORPGs are awesome ways to interact and make friends I cant help but get worried that I will become obsessed and will not stop playing it, get fat, loose my GF, and die of a heart attack at the age of 30 through not leaving my PCą
Any thoughts? ------

Given that I've been playing EVE for a year and a half now, and am actually in the best physical condition of my adult life, I'd have a hard time assuming a direct correlation between MMOs and an unhealthy lifestyle.
Sure, there is some connection - sitting down for long periods of time and probably grazing on snack foods is hardly conducive to good health - but just playing an MMO alone is not enough to make you unhealthy.
I ride my bicycle or walk around town, do some calisthenics in the morning, take a trip to the gym every week, take the stairs at work, and tend not to eat at my computer. This is a new habit that I'm still getting into (and occasionally fall out of - especially the morning calisthenics bit) but it makes a big difference. I'm by no means an olympian, but I don't have trouble finding clothes that fit, and I get checked out in the street just often enough to keep my ego healthy.
That said, the obsession with the game is a factor, and taking on a more healthy lifestyle meant forcing myself to cut back on my EVE time. Given that I was on the verge of burning out on it anyway for various reasons, this has been a good thing for me. ***

EVE is a pretty good MMORPG to take breaks from without being at a major disadvantage. Set skill and take a walk, set autopilot and feed the goldfish, activate tank and release drones and do the dishes etc. -

Well the reason I chose Eve over WoW etc apart from other reasons was largely the fact that you can develop your character away from the pc. The fact skills learn offline etc, for me and I am sure many others, greatly removes the addictive factor of constantly wanting to be by the pc to 'level up'.
Out of all the mmorpgs Eve is the most fun and best designed --------------------

If you have an addictive personallity eve will just fuel it but it wont be the cause, if you don't play eve it will just be some other addiction in which case the problem is worse then playing a game to much. -------- Kill em all and let god sort em out

as soon as you think your playing too much, just stop playing and focus all your attention AWAY from the computer. if you don't stop it (game addiction) early it will **** you up badly.
The episode of south park is called make love not warcraft :)
there are two pure pwnage episodes, 6 and 7 i think, that deal with mmo issues in an hilarious, but kinda serious manner.

i love the train skills while away, it not only frees up my time, but ccp save on bandwidth!
I've heard people say it's just a ploy to make people subscribe, but i've played other games, and sure you can learn skills faster than other people. I've sat at a pc for days in a row, literally days, and it's no fun, and no way to play a game.

I just started playing EVE here recently and IĘve been enjoying the casualness of play. Now I can definitely see how it could truly monopolize oneĘs time, especially if youĘre the CEO of a corp or have people relying on your participation, however thatĘs not something that IĘm aspiring to with EVE.
I donĘt have to be at the computer to ęlevel upĘ or progress and that puts some ease on the addictions to MMOs that clutch my mind. IĘm done with the ęhardcore gamerĘ thing. I did that in WoW with a raiding guild and I just canĘt stand that scene anymore. Fortunately I got into a corp of good casual players that when weĘre on we can have fun, but attendance is not a requirement.
I felt as if I was falling into that trap a few months back, I had an annual check-up and noticed more than a few lbs were gained so I realized its time stop the sedentary lifestyle. I started exercising at the gym and watching what I was consuming so IĘm in fairly decent shape now, if only I could fully quit smoking. But the biggest thing that helps is that I am playing a game that satisfies my MMO craving while not having to lead such a sedentary lifestyle. (I sit all day at work too ><)
Everything in moderation. Even EVE.

Just think of eve or MMOs in general as a replacement for watching TV. Alot of people just sit there like zombies and watch TV like 3-4 hours a day, well treat it as such. Sure your not gonna live up to some of these huge alliances or power-gamers, but then again would you really want to?
The motherships, titans, hundreds of billions of isk... these things are just trappings for people who play the game way way too often. Play it to have fun but remember at all times that RL comes first. You should be able to walk away from EvE as easily as walking away from an episode of friends.

Step 1) Propose to girlfriend. Step 2) Sneak in clause in pre-nuptial agreement stating Eve and video game playing in general is not a valid grounds for legal action and/or divorce. Step 3) Drug girlfriend, make her sign. Step 4) Marry girlfriend, change girlfriend into wife. Step 5) Profit. _________________________________________________________

I started playing EVE in the last beta.
I have never gotten addicted to it as some of you have. I have been more addicted to other games, but that usually only lasts a few weeks. (Morrowind was the worst, I was addicted to that for over 1 year).
If EVE did not have the offline skill training system, I would not still have 4 accounts to this game...
Because of EVE, I will NEVER waste time on an MMO that has a grinding skill leveling system...
