Let's not forget that it is fairly fair. If they were to make it every few days it wouldn't be at regular intervals as sometimes they would simply need it after 2 days, other times they might leave it to 4, and they would help/hinder random people each time.
This way everyone knows when it is and can work around it. --------------------

They do maintenance on the servers during that time. I don't have a technical explanation, but apparently its needed to keep the servers in shape. ___

Downtime is needed to compact and repair the MS Access 97 database that the game runs on.

Every game has DT's.
Each and every MMO.
This one has it daily for a miniscule time.
Others, just pull the plug at ungodly hours, hope that the monkey had enough coffee and plug it back in in the morning...many times making it go catrsrophaci....cstrap...largely poof.
Be happy, have a nappy, it's only an hour

Edited by: Presidente Gallente on 05/03/2007 14:53:47 Why do you reboot your computer time by time? Why do you intall updates of drivers etc. time by time?
The server behind EVE is way more complex than a single computer at work or home. From my experience a warm reboot is often a solution to solve performance issues or other crap. The EVE's cluster harddrives must be heavy fragmented due million of changes over a day. It has to be done to guarantee performance and less crashes. IMO it's a very old rule and no system in the world is doing that on its own perfectly. Noone is safe in wilderness, noone is safe in EVE ... so nothing is safe on a computer, NEVER! *;-)

Bah, bloody armchair experts, most of you don't have a clue. DT sucks... a lot, particularly if you are a timezone where it falls in the middle of your available play time.
I understand the need and the reasons for reboots/restarts of large systems but I'm not even going to take a guess at the exact specifics in the case of the EVE servers, because guess what, NONE OF US HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO DO SO. Yes, it runs on MSSQL (not something I'd personally choose) but so do a lot of other systems that don't need to be rebooted once a day.
I'd be a lot happier if it was only once a week. Hell, even once every 2 days would be an enourmous improvement.
Anyway, DT is scheduled to be one hour. In practice it is normally 35-40 minutes. After patches it tends to blow out for a while as they try to fix issues caused by the patch. In case you weren't aware there was a patch a week or so ago and the downtimes have been abnormally long as a result.
