What is the problem exactly?
No one likes her personality, or is she truly a bad teacher?
Do you guys view her as bad because she is hard?
If she truly is a bad teacher, get a petition going. Try to get all the kids who have her (have had her in the past) and give that petition to the school board asking to remove her.
Also, try to get parents of said students to sign it as well...

Yeah, just from what you are saying she sounds terrible. I know that if I was your teacher I would be choking to teach what appears to be a highly intellectual and mature class what they wanted, when they wanted. In fact it would be my privilege...

This is why they need Corporal punishment back in the classroom.
You'll generally find that if you treat your teacher ok, they'll treat you with respect, if not.. the rest of the staff might turn and get a bit more aggressive on you for being such a "jerk off".

Edited by: Iesha Macabre on 06/03/2007 15:03:35 Edited by: Iesha Macabre on 06/03/2007 14:59:08 aww can none of you remember what school was like? It was us against them, at least it was when I was there. Alright, harassing and driving out a teacher, possibly heading them towards a nervous breakdown isn't the nicest thing to do, even if she is inept (which she probably can't help), but that's what school is. Teachers try and make students life a misery while trying to insert information into their brains, students try to make teachers life a misery while trying to ignore as much information as possible. It's how the institution functions

Grow up..
Telling an 8th grader to grow up seems a bit redundant tbh seeing that childhood is the only time it's actually acceptable to be childish...
As for genuine advice rather than arsey commentary...
If you have a bad teacher you're stuck with it. (and everyone's had a bad teacher) Even if you do drive her out, it'll probably be so long a process you'll be in the year above by then anyway. Personally I'd advise against trying to report her to another teacher, as they tend to stick together, unless the student body went en masse - you could try a petition like someone else suggested - but the thing is, if you're the one handing in that petition you might be seen as a trouble maker. The way foward is through your parents. In my experience, at school, you had the barest illusion of any rights; unless the teachers are extremely liberal no ones going to listen or care about your opinion. Your parents kick up a fuss and you might get moved classes, and if enough parents complain about the teaching standard from a particular teacher then something might get done.

Judging by our different experiences, yeah. But experience can probably vary fairly widely within countries too depending on area and money. Nobby toff's school might have been very different to the Sawdust academy I attended, for example
We had some fine examples...One let all the boys go, then locked all the girls in the gym with him (including the fire door) for an unspecified reason for an unspecified amount of time, which freaked us all out. At the end of the day when everyone bundled out of the school for their buses, he'd lock one of the double doors before hand so there was a crush out of a smaller exit, then he'd stand and watch. One day a fat kid clogged the exit up, and this apparently ruined his view so he pretty much threw him from the door against a wall 0_o
One of them actually told me, that in cases of accused child abuse, without knowing any of the details, she'd support another member of staff instead of the child because they should stick together o_0 ethics and morals were not particularly on the curriculum at my school there were a few nice ones, but few and far between, and the vast majority thought we were the enemy to be supressed and acted accordingly - regardless of any kind of respect you initially showed them (and I was a good girl ^^).

The lady is just trying to do her work and from your 14 years old, holding all the truth of the world in your hand, you can decide what is righteous to do or not. One day you'll become wiser, you'll have another vision on what is life and that you can't gain any selt-respect while lowering other people. And that day you will truly understand what you have done and trust me, there won't be any pride involved in it. -- "Please, would you tell me," said Alice, a little timidly, ... One of the most twisted ways to do it might be to identify a pretty smart classmate, have them learn it, and help y'all when you have some free time.
Not as easy/fun as what you've been doing, but the priceless part of it? Whenever someone asks how you learned it, you can tell them that your 14 year old classmate taught it better than your teacher...and it'd be true.

Get used to it. When you get to college, the professors stop being responsible for your learning. If you are lucky they will explain something very shortly and run you throug a few examples. You are expected to do your own learning outside of that.

The petition thing may work, but it won't help you right now. Also, has your class tried to confront this teacher seriously? If he was unresponsive, then petition.

Its possible that you are right, but tbh, a whole class should be sensible enough to have given the teacher enough of a chance by now. I highly doubt that they had this attitude to the teacher in the start, but you really really get annoyed when you feel that you are wasting your time.
I myself got a new teacher this christmas. Im a student at a business-school, and the new teacher is my english-teacher. We have english at A, even though it may be hard to see from my post.
This guy is so insanely bad at english, that half the time im just *sigh*ing. Its not like I am terrorizing him or anything, but at times I feel like. If you've ever felt like you wasted your time, then you should attend one of his classes and be amazed.

Someone should tell his parents to give him a good spanking and take away his computer till he learns to respect his elders.
Need a reason to respect them then in the first place. If the guy is wasting both his, AND my time and money, then he does not deserve my respect.

Your final question in your exams.
Can you master this phrase? "Do you want fries with that?"
I loved maths in school, no grey areas, just the right answer and the wrong answer.

I can sympathise with several of the different points of view here. It's no fun being in a class of disruptive idiots (if you actually care, that is). I just put up with it for a few years, and gradually started doing things more independently, to the point where I was teaching myself maths rather than going to some of the lessons. The school I was in was a grammar school but even so, there were a lot of people there who had very little academic ambition.
A friend of mine took a similar view to the OP most of the time - he's now a bouncer at a (fairly upmarket) strip club, and I'm doing a degree . I think we both got what we wanted, though - he gets paid ridiculous sums of money to watch strippers & beat people up, and I get to know some like-minded people. ------

I have had my share of bad teachers (even on an MSc course that wasn't cheap) but that doesn't mean that I considered abusing them verbally or physically. There are more mature ways of getting through bad classes, you know.

I had a crap math teacher. We taught each other the material as best we could, but I still ended up failing my Leaving Cert (final second level exams) over it and having to repeat. I hope the old ***** gets hit by a bus tbh.
It's hard to judge whether the OP actually has a bad teacher or is an ignorant gurrier, but the sort of person who many of the posters in this thread seem to think the OP is, wouldn't be trying to get themselves a *better* teacher.

Awww aren't you cute. In a few years from now, after you get your liberal arts degree from some crappy feel-good college you'll get a job. You'll realize that all your bosses are a bunch of jerk-offs and then you'll think to yourself - "I don't have to take this. I'm special and unique." So you quit to follow your dream to become an artist. You try to get a new job to pay the bills but you find that your liberal arts degree is worthless. You'll fall behind on your car payments and then a repo-man will come one night are reposess your Toyota Prius. You'll start to miss mortgage payments and then one day after going out to get a no foam mocha latte from down the street, the bank has posted a sign saying it forclosed on your live-work loft in the trendy SOMA district in San Francisco. As you pack your pretentious belongings you think back on your days in middle school, and you wish someone would have just told you to STFU and GBTW.

My parents would've beaten me if they ever found out I was a **** to a teacher. Even if they were crap.
A crappy teacher just makes you have to try harder, which will make you better in the long run.
Talk to faculty about it, but don't **** them off. You need to see it from their standpoint, what they do is what puts food on their table, and they don't need the **** you give them.
BTW, not a teacher, I am a university student studing BioSci. --

Edited by: Trovarion on 11/03/2007 11:44:57 the experience I made was that maths teachers are suprisingly often not able to explain their stuff to people that don't get it the first time (a.k.a future rocket scientists or future maths teachers). I don't know for sure, but I guess this has something to do with the slight autistic tendencies you have to have to be a maths genious (no offense to anyone) or maybe you just lose/never gain the ability to explain something because studying maths involves a lot of time where you just sit there and work on your own, trying to figure out the given problem, etc.
No generalisation intended there, just my experiences with my share of maths teachers and my toughts during/reflecting back on the time I had to deal with them =)

seriously, if the teacher is ineffective or rude, go to the principle, infact go to the principle during her class. Make sure you see THE principle, not one of his aids. Hmm recently I was walking down the street with a cigarette in my mouth, daydreaming.. I bump into a past teacher from Secondary School, and my instinctive reaction was to stand up straight and fast as I could.. take the cigg out of my mouth and hide it..
She was a veeery strict.. but fair teacher.. and although I've had my fair share of "bad" teachers, I respect the job they do.. because tbh its thankless most of the time.
