Edited by: dot me on 07/03/2007 13:14:14 first of all. i want to say that i know eople have different opinions about stuff. it's only natural. so .. if you disagree with my thoughts on the matter, i respect your opinion.
so. lately .. alot of people have noticed/argued about overview beeing the mother of all problems in eve. more or les :))
considering all that has overview has to offer i'd say .. it's a bit too much. first of all ... it gives detailed info about every ship on grid. this includes ship category, owner/name of the pilot, current speed, current transversal, current distance. all this info is fine .. it's also very usefull. be the problem is .. it's too usefull .. and far too easy to obtain.
what i'm going to sugest is to add some skill to using it. imagine this. first out overview only shows the distance to the target and target type (frigate/cruiser/bs/capital). you would then need to target a ship to find out it's statistics. speed/transversal and ownership(i icluded the ownership/name of the target here for obvius reasons = focused fire).
what hapens then when you lose the lock on a ship? well you lose it's statistic details (speed and transversal) but not constant details(like .. ownership/name).
ofcourse the main issue with this thing would be .. friend of foe detection. this is specificly tied to ownership. you could shortcut this easily for friends(alies or corp mates) but it's quite hard to distingush neutrals from enemies.
ofcourse then you'd have to have a much more detailed info on the ship type then we have now. maybe different icons for distroyers and bc's, meaningfull icons for player ships etc.
also .. on the minus side would be ships with limited targeting range(like frigates), or ships with limited number of locked targets(again .. the small ones). well an answer would be sensor bosters, or a modified module based of sensor bosters that ads max target range(a bit more), strength(also a bt more) and max locked target. also coaked ships. i won't make sugestions here because i am a bit unsure if i should be. so i would leave this open to whom ever wishes to debate.
so .. to summ it up .. the info would still be there ... but you have to use your ships sensors(and player skills) to get the usefull info by targeting the ship you want info about it.
ps. on a side note .. please do not post stuff like "i like it" .. "thumbs up" "signed" :) i only wish for constructive criticism :D

Wrong forum.
But other than that my main complaint about the overview other than creating too much lag by demanding too much irrelevent information from the server, is how much space it takes up on screen to be useful.
Between the overview, the drone controls, gang controls, and the chat system, I barely have enough room for a ship. I can't imagine how it is for people at lower resolutions. _________________________ ~Thor Xian, Material Defender

Would bring total havoc into fleet or medium scale warfare, as people will shoot wrong targets and eventually all the fleet combat will turn into one big 'free for all'. Will disregard teamplay as well, since calling a target or making any organized combat will be next to useless. --- tnx. |

Would this be an all out free for all, planet to planet free for all or killing women and children and looting free for all?
Infact any of them sound like more fun than blobs to me.

Would you find fun to fight a war where all that matters is what side got more expensive ships/fittings rather then organization/tactics? --- tnx. |

Well it would still invole tactics and if anything more organization. Although ships and fittings would come into it a bit more this could still, like in most small scale engagement, be overcome by good tactics.

Nice idea.
Perhaps, though, your ship keeps a track of these things, so the next time you encounter the same ship and pilot, the information is still there. That way, corp/alliance/criminal pilot information could be assumed to be pre-loaded into your ship's database.
However, things like transversal and ship type can easily be found out visually, so should be trivial for the ship computer to compute, and should always be there.
For gangs and fleets, as far as I know it's possible for the FC to flag the primary anyway with a visual marker. That could easily be assumed to be transmitted automatically to all the fleet/gang ships, and show on their display. So even if you don't know who the pilot is, the FC can still call them as primary.
Of course, that means that all that's left to find out is the pilot name - which should again be easily found out by matching the registration number of the ship (I'm assuming ships have such a thing, even if it isn't explicitly talked about in canon) with a CONCORD registry to get the pilot name.
So in other words, nice idea, but the technology is in there in canon to do it anyway. -J --------------------------------- "He who 'hah hahs' last, 'hah hahs' best." - Nelson
