I was flying my frigate in 0.3 space trying to do some higher level rating, but I just ended up getting completely owned. I locked onto one of the ships and set my orbit for 15km as I use missals, I was getting about 480 with the afterburner. But pretty much as soon as combat began I was getting hit and hit hard. In such a small ship I couldn't really tank my way out of it, and I tried to use speed but it didn't really work. So my question is what's the best way for a frigate to compete with bigger ships, or is there just a point where a lone frigate is hopelessly outmatched?

Thanks for the advice. One more questions. In my Kestrel at .5km orbit I'm only getting 300km/s instead of my usual 500. Should I adjust the orbit or work on increase my maneuvering?

Here's another scenario. I was flying my Kestrel in 0.4 space and came upon 2 Gurista's Nihilists which are Destroyer class I think. I had my ship outfitted with 4 rocket launchers a afterburner a shield extender a targeting disrupter and two speed boosts. I targeted the closest rat and set my orbit to .5km while hitting him with the target disruptor. When I got in close enough I hit him with the rockets. By the time he was dead though my shields were down to nothing and my armor was damaged. I tried to warp out but got blown up. How should I have handled this encounter?

So I might have been able to fight something bigger like a cruiser but the destroyer was just a bad match up? What makes destroyers such a problem?

Yet another scenario, I was in 0.3 space with two Cruisers around getting nailed by Heavy Missiles no matter how near or far I was from the ships. I looked back over this post and saw the warning against Guristas because of the missiles, but the poster noted that with better skills it might be possible to fight them, how so? Also, I'm up to 680 with my Kestrel but my max before AB is 355 and the AB adds 130% so I don't see how that adds up right? Finally, my speed is also down lower when I get into the close orbit, is this to be expected?

Thanks a TON to everyone who has posted on this thread. I'm definitely getting better. I was able to kill a couple of destroyers, a whole bunch of cruisers and a battlecruiser while ratting in 0.4 and 0.3 space. I eventually bit it in a pvp session with someone with a bunch or drones. As someone pointed out later the only real answer I could have for them is smart bombs. I still have a couple of questions though about ship layout.
I tried a tracking disruptor as some people suggested but seemed to do no better with it on then with it off. I tried a targeting jammer but didn't manage to jam anything. I tried a webber but that didn't seem to help much either. In other words I'm not quite sure if I should, or how I should, use ECM?
Also I've been thinking of a couple of layouts for a Merline and I was looking for some feedback on them. First, I thought that I could put in a whole bunch of things to help the capacitor and try to maintain a shield booster for as long as possible. Secondly I thought maybe just put as many shield extenders in as possible, including a medium sized one, since this will not only increase the size of the shield but the recharge per second as well. I'm leaning toward the second one since I'm not having much luck with ECM and my speed seems to be enough for what I'm doing with it. What do you all think?

Well since this topic seems to be going well, here's a few more questions for the kind people who've been answering. First, I've gotten killing battlecruisers down pretty well but when it comes to battleships I'm having a few problems, chief among them that it takes so long to kill them that other ships, often destroyers respawn. With a blaster and rocket layout I then have to go chains those ships at which point the battleship takes the **** out of me. I was wondering if I should switch back to missiles to deal with further targets? Also it's taking amazingly long to do any real damage to the battleships any suggestions?
On a related but sperate note the biggest cause of me loosing ships recently has been pirates gate camping in 0.0, where I look for the battleships. Any tips for dealing with theses?
