What slang terms, abbreviated or acronyms, do you use for ships in Eve?
Nomens for Navy Omens for example. Or the proverbial "Potato" for the dominix.
What are some of your favorites over the years? Have they changed?
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

Rino for any of my CNR's and my Golem. Because it has the BR SKIN as default, I named my Paladin the "Cannibal" and it's still rather fitting I think. Some had fictional military style nomenclatures and designators in the name depending on what they where, for instance my Golem has the nomen MAR/CS-5A in the name. "MAR" meant it is a Marauder class, "CS" for Caldari State as the origin faction, the "5" meant it is a Battleship, and the "A" stood for it being a Tech 2 ship.
I did go through a phase where I was naming ships after the names of mechs in Battletech lore; Frigs and Dessies where named after lights like the Firemoth or Jenner, cruisers and battlecruisers where named after mediums like the Hunchback and Nova, battleships after heavies and assaults like the Atlas and Timber Wolf. I still have a few ships lying around with mech names. I even got real particular about naming T1's after IS mechs, T2's and T3's after Omnimechs, and faction ships after Clan mechs.
Hell, I have a Raptor called simply "Raptor", not because it is one but because it reminds me of the one Lockheed Martin produced. Even my old Garmur was called the "JSF" just for ***** and giggles. Then, I went and changed it to the "Batmobile" at one point.
"Tomahawks?"
"----in' A, right?"
"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."
"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

I've generally known it as a 'Navy Exeq'.
Mostly I'm used to just shortened versions of the name or acronyms, some that come to mind:
Exequeror - Exeq Confessor - 'fessor Oneiros - Oni Vagabond - Vaga Dominix - Domi Scythe Fleet Issue - Fleet Scythe (or SFI if typing, but it doesn't feel right to say aloud) Scorpion Navy Issue - Navy Scorp Cerberus - Cerb Vexor Navy Issue - VNI
Either that or the more common names on comms*:
Anything fast - 'they're in some kitey bullshit' T3Ds - Cancer Thorax - take your pick of penis/**** joke Falcon/Griffin/Rook - 'fuckn ECM' Garmur/Orthrus - 'don't bother engaging' aka bullshit aka balanced legion Any fleet bigger than mine - dirty blobbers Any fleet smaller than mine - wusses for docking up Any slow brawling ships - lol free kill (inb4 bait) Cloakies - 'little bitches who won't take a real fight'
*Disclaimer: I've been most of these at some stage. Except for Balanced Legion. **** balanced legion.

If any of you are wondering why I posted this thread it has to do with Lore, player made lore. These names are what WE, capsuleers, call our hulls. Much like veterans talking about their ships, planes and vehicles throughout time and space. Those who remember and look back talk about things in a different vernacular than the layperson would. How would we talk about our experiences in a few hundred years of immortal capsuleer life? What would we have seen and felt in our times as pod pilots? The destruction? The joys, the sadness of defeats? Would these be meaningful in an immortal life? Would they be relevant?
Many people during war times throughout history have raised beer or spirits, made love and done everything they could because tomorrow they might not return.... We have become exempt from this reality even though we can thrust ourselves into combat and kill or be killed countless times. So have we become exempt from such a reality as well?
These ships are our lore life. Connected to them as much as we are to our arms and legs.... literally... how do we call them? How do we look upon them? When even our own arms and legs become expendable? When our bodies become so much more than a meat popsicle.... Tossable like our beer cans and water bottles on some god awful land fill of time....
Our stories are our own... immortal and neverending... burned into our collective psyches..... forever.... we are EVE!!! Will YOU be remembered?!!
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.

What I am actually surprised in is that not a lot of ships, other than the domi, have really gained wide spread notoriety in their naming conventions. Theres some good ones in here gentlemen, and gentlewomen as well I hope, so keep them coming. It makes me wonder if it is the current meta in terms of the fits of specific ships that get named internally by alliances, think Wrecking ball or Slowcat, rather than specific ship names that end up being more prevalent and thus getting changed more as CCP nerfs/buffs and changes them over the years.
Typically ships/hardware/etc seems to be what it is and doesnt change functionally over the same "hull" type. I think this could be attributed to the quickness of gaming situational changes versus real life counterpart development speeds lagging in general and usually making a clear distinction between two different subsequent models or needs.
As we know game changes occur much faster than real life so its a nice way to condense the time frames, much like breeding bacteria in a lab to look for mutations can occur much faster than with say even mice or rabbits let alone mammals or humans. I shall ponder these things more.
Thanx for all the input so far.

I usually call Ruptures the 'Homing Brick'.
A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

I can't be the only one.... All the supers and I think some of the carriers hulls are based on early earth sea animals. Im not sure what era they are from (cambrian, mesozoic, etc) But most of them have some animal, mostly the early sea animals, they seem to be very much like. Would love confirmation from CCP of this if it was intent.

In that case common nicknames are less important, though exceptions exist which is proven by only a handful of ships having common monikers.
Terms of endearment or disgust towards a ship type denote the overall characteristics of that ship/vehicle, rather than any personal attachment. History is littered with derogatory names for tanks, planes, and the like. Similarly, individual vehicles are often remembered fondly for breaking the mould and outperforming their peers, or in infamy for ill-fated journeys/fates.
Looking back upon your career, you might say you flew a lot of a certain ship, but that only one really stood out from the crowd. Those are the tales you'll be telling.
Most of my ships are named with this in mind, with an overarching theme divided up by ship class, and further broken down by variant fits. As such, I can recall the names of most my ships with the requisite amount of delight or dismay based upon how much I enjoyed flying them. It's a small part of what keeps me coming back for more. |
