Back in March, we announced adding support for Wine as an alternative to Cider, the wrapper used to run the EVE client on OS X. The feedback we have received has been very positive, with most players reporting improved stability and performance. We are now planning to stop supporting Cider in September, so we encourage everybody that hasn't done so already to switch to Wine. The latest launcher prompts you to make the switch to Wine, making this process quite straight-forward.
What is Wine? As stated on www.winehq.org Wine is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows application on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX and BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.
Wine options You shouldn't have to change any Wine options, and these may change at any time as we get feedback. For now, the main option is what version of Wine should be used - we provide daily builds from the Wine git repository (git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git). If you select 'Use dev versions' you can choose any of a number of recent daily builds, or to always use the latest one. If you leave the dev versions checkbox unchecked, you can select from stable builds that have had some testing. The WINEDEBUG field allows you to set a value for the WINEDEBUG environment variable that controls debugging output from Wine. This can be useful for tracking down issues, but should in general be left empty.
What if it doesn't work? Go to Preferences and select Cider for the wrapper, then everything should work as it did before. Please do tell us about it, either by posting in the feedback thread or by filing a bug report. Our goal is to improve the Mac experience and we need your feedback on this to do that.

Known issues
- Launcher needs to be restarted after changing wrapper type
- Launcher needs to be restarted after changing Wine version
- There are stability issues with busy scenes at high resolutions. This actually applies to Cider as well.

Wine is great on my 13" Macbook whilst running fullscreen. However when I switch to windowed mode (which I have to do to look at my browser or multi box) the default Mac resolution kicks in meaning my window is too big for the screen. I can reduce the resolution however this messes up all my windows and looks horrible.
On Cider I could have native mac res with a high res eve window, however I could not stretch or resize this window on the fly.
I can't seem to increase my Macbook resolution to the same as I run Eve at. Google has not helped and now I only got a month to find a solution before Cider support is ended.
Can anyone help? |

Cider has been glitchy for me, with the game locking up randomly from time to time. (I've lost two sets of Sisters probes as a result, though the devs have been nice and given them back to me.
However I am having a MUCH WORSE experience with WINE on my mid-2011 Thunderbolt iMac. Twice now I have tried to use it, and both times the same exact same issue occurs:
* I login and arrive at my station, and after I open my Beta Map to plan a route, there is a sound alert, and my mouse cursor changes to a question mark. * Then less than 10 seconds later, I get the beach ball of death. The screen is locked on the station and I cannot interact with it, though the music is still playing. * I can use Alt-Tab to select other apps that might be open, but the screen never changes. I can use Alt-Tab to quit other applications, including the game client. However I am unable to quit the WINE Launcher. * I am unable to get back to anything else, including the Finder, and I am forced to do a hard restart of the machine.
I have just submitted a bug report, and I will try again later to see if I can do it a third time and get a screenshot or two.

Mid-2011 iMac here, 3.4GHz i7. Graphics is AMD Radeon HD 6970M.
Game is super smooth on Cider - 45+ FPS with all graphics on and maxed except antialiasing. Switched to Wine, left defaults. Looked on in station, maybe a tad slower, but after undocking graphics run full speed about a second, pause, then run normal a second, then pause, etc. FPS counter actually shows "peaks" occurring at that time. The slight frame rate drop is disappointing but the glitching/pausing breaks the game. If you need additional logs/data please let me know. |

Could you try some different settings, in particular turning off post-processing? Let me know what effect, if any, that has. Also try a smaller window size.
Most players see improved performance from what I've seen so far, so I'm interested in finding out what makes your experience different.

Could you try running at a lower resolution, and lower graphics settings, in particular the post-processing and anti-aliasing? It sounds like it might be running out of memory, this would help confirm it. Please add this information to the bug report.

Switched Wine versions a couple of times, back on the default "latest" choice and weird pausing/glitching is gone, so not sure what that was about. Frame rate is still about 10-15fps lower. Will play with graphics options but normally all are set to "High" except antialiasing. Will file a bug report as requested. |

I updated from Cider to Wine today.
Fullscreen mode works great. It's noticeably faster and smoother on my macbook pro 15" retina at 2880x1800.
When I run windowed mode with a smaller resolution so that I can work with my other windows, the client begins to glitch. If I try to drag and move a window to reposition it, it will jerk and stutter as it moves across the screen. While in empty space, clicking in space and dragging it to reposition the camera will also display the same jerky stutter or shaking. One time, while moving the camera, it got stuck or something and the screen starting spinning in circles very fast until I tried to move the camera somewhere else. Very dizzy. I was unable to recreate this.
Going to fullscreen seems to resolve these issues instantly. |

I've switched to Wine the other day and it works great, except for 2 things: * Bookmark ordening seems to be different for special characters (I used to put an asterisk in front of important bookmarks to place them at top, but now they end up at the bottom of the list. * the sensitivity of setting the scanning probe resolution using ALT-scrolling is off the chart and isn't usable as a result. |

I tried it again, and switched the graphics to a lower setting, turned post-processing to low, and already had anti aliasing disabled. Changes took effect, and then the second I opened the map, the cursor was a question mark again, and the client locked up as before.
Tried again, found that everything was fine with the lower settings, until I opened the Map Beta. Crashed as before. Tried again, turned settings back up, tweaked a couple of things, and it ran just fine... UNTIL I opened the Map Beta. Then it instantly changed the cursor to a question mark and got the beach ball of death.
It seemed to be tied to the Map Beta. Every time I tried to access it when I am docked this happened.
BUT I realized that I have a gaming mouse with the default Ctrl + F10 for the Map Beta shortcut set to a button. So on a lark I changed that, in case there was a conflict of some sort.
When I changed the keystroke binding to something else and changed the command in EVE, the problem went away.
So somehow there was a conflict with the command using the mouse software and WINE. Should not happen, but it was happening. Now the problem appears to be resolved. I am going to play with WINE now and see how it runs and will report on how that goes. But for now the mystery crash is gone. |

switched to wine this morning. firstly, thanking CCP for taking the time to preserve all window and overview settings during the conversion. saved a lot of time - much appreciated.
secondly, am running 2 clients. entered "windowed" mode and quickly noticed the top portion of each window has been cut off - about 1/2 inch worth. this is a huge disadvantage. is there any way to fix this? |

I usually run my two accounts in window mode in separate spaces. This worked fine until recently and allowed for easy swiping between sessions.
As of week 29 '16 my wine sessions sometimes freeze followed by a wine error. This seems to affect the 2nd wine session more than it does the first but both suffer from this problem.
Possible causes: a recent game patch OR the most recent osx update.
The problem does not seem occur when I run in Fixed Window mode but the disadvantage is that any window I have open has an impact on he game's framerate.
I have already raised a bug report for this (which sadly I cannot find unless I raise another bug i guess :-)
osx 10.11.6. dev version option switched off latest wine version, tried older ones but the same problem occurs
Can you please advise ?

Looks great. Big visual improvement over the Cider client.
Unfortunately, after cmd-tabbing out of the game and back in, I see a huge performance hit from 40fps down to something between 10-15 depending on what's on screen. Warping is the worst.
Will try some settings to figure out why, but here's the reproduction steps:
1. Open the game in Wine 2. Cmd-tab to any other window (usually to check zkill or something) 3. Cmd-tab back to the game 4. Suffer massive performance hit

Actually, it's worse then that. Selecting "wine latest" as my version of wine, "Window mode" not only has a ~1/2 inch thickness worth of screen missing at the top but then your mouse pointer needs to be about another ~1/2 inch below what you want to click on in order to select anything. So for buttons, you have to click below the button in order to actually press it. Similarly, all UI interactions have to factor in this offset. This effectively makes the game unplayable in this mode.
In "fixed window" mode, you can use the mouse pointer correctly but on my 2015 Macbook Pro with Retina display, I'm struggling to find a resolution that works as well as what I had under Cider. The laptop has a 2560 x 1600 resolution but I have to use 1280 x 768 in "fixed window" mode to make it work which is too low resolution to be enjoyable.
Any hints on how to play Eve in Wine on my MacPro in window mode with at least as good an experience as I have using Cider?
Thanks!

I made the switch to Wine today and I'm seeing some graphical artifacts, along with a major performance hit. The artifacts only appear with Shader Quality set to High. While the performance problem isn't constant with shaders turned down, my frame rate drops around 60% every 15 seconds before jumping back up to full speed (regardless of interval setting).
As for the artifacts, this is what I've noticed so far:
- It appears as though the depth buffer isn't being respected, particularly with anything to do with lights or reflections. This occurs inside stations and in space.
- There are rendering artifacts in the smoke in stations.
Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/MEelk4X.png (smoke artifacts circled)
I've tried deleting the wine folders in the Shared Cache and verifying integrity. I haven't had an issue with stability yet; hasn't crashed for a half hour.
OS X 10.11.5 iMac 27" Late 2013 i5 3.4GHz GTX 775M w/ nVidia Web Driver version 346.03.10f02 (haven't tested with native Apple drivers yet) Edit: I just noticed that it's not detecting my graphics card correctly, though Cider does. Wine is reporting it as "NVIDIA GeForce 6800 1"

Yes, I can confirm that. Moving the window does not change anything but resizing resolves the offset problem. But then quitting and restarting results in the offset problem coming back.
Hope that helps! If you have anything more you'd like me to try, feel free to ask and I'll see what I can do...

i stumbled across a 99% solution to the 1/2 inch issue.
1) opened system preferences 2) clicked on "dock" to open sub-menu 3) checked the box to hide it
that gave 1/2 inch at the bottom of the screen dragged eve client window to the bottom to fill the screen problem almost solved.
now cursor is off by 1 line when highlighting anything. not perfect by any measure, but much better than before. |

I made the switch after installing a new hard drive. Everything seems fine other than when I type in any channel my game lags very badly.

I'm totally fine with the client running on wine and therefore a big thank you to CCP Snorlax!
However, there ist one thing that does not work correctly:
I use the radial menu very frequently but with wine it does not work: I use my middle mouse button to activate the radial menu and whenever I move my mouse pointer towards one menu item the mouse pointer just wiggles but does not move actually. Something similar happens when I move windows (no matter if they are chat windows, info windows, the overview, or what-have-you): when I move the window slowly it works as expected but when I move the window fast it start to wiggle and jumps around on the client's screen. This was tested with different mice and also with a wacom mouse and stylus on a tablet, which I prefer to play with. Same result in either case.
Any suggestions on that CCP Snorlax?
Thanks and best regards, Tass. o7

I'll do a bit of digging, see if can come up with some theories to test.

Recently, Ive noticed that starting the game has been taking a very long time. I do't know if this is due to the launcher, or Wine taking a long time to get going. Times launching my three accounts:
1st account: Clicking on the account to character selection screen: 50 seconds. Selecting character to being in game: 15 seconds. 2nd account: Clicking on the account to character selection screen: 70 seconds. Selecting character to being in game: 30 seconds. 3rd account: Clicking on the account to character selection screen: 125 seconds. Selecting character to being in game: 40 seconds.
Total time to launch all three clients, and be able to do stuff: five minutes 30 seconds.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Send me a bug report with LogLite logs, I'll look for the smoking gun. Start LogLite from the View menu of the launcher before starting the first account, then save it out after the last one is ready to play. Save the log and attach it to the bug report. Put my name in the title so it gets routed to me right away.

Interestingly, changing the setting from middle mouse button to right mouse button does indeed work as intended! switching back again to middle mouse button does not fix it - with middle mouse button the radial menu isn't working.
btw, I changed the binding under General Settings -> Inflight -> Open Radial Menu With:

Do you start all clients simultaneously? If so, it might help to wait until the first client is on the character selection screen before starting the next account. If you are already doing that, I'm out of ideas, at least until I've done some more testing.

We have a repro case for the error messages I saw in your logs, and my theory is that they are the key to the issue. We're not seeing the same extreme delay you are experiencing, but that depends on more factors (connection speed, hard disk speed, CPU speed). I'll test some changes to address this internally tomorrow and if that pans out, we'll get a potential fix out to Singularity ASAP and have you test.
I appreciate your patience and your help in tracking down this issue.

Think about the GPU. For example: If I minimize each client before starting the next, the start times are the same for all three, and equal to the first one I gave above. Also: Once they are all started, my FPS, ships docked, is 4.0. If I minimize two clients, the remaining one runs at 13 FPS. (All settings as low as they go, except texture, set to medium.)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
As its a MacBook Pro, I have no option to update the GPU. As its a 17" MBP, I do not wish to upgrade, as Apple does not make 17" MBPs any more.
The minimum specs say 320M, so I'm above the minimum. Maybe you need to take a look why the performance stinks with my GPU.

Snorlax, just wanted to say good job for keeping up on all the Linux issues. I don't even use Linux, I just check the dev posts every couple days and constantly see you working on it. Always encouraging to see a dev fixing stuff and communicating about it often and clearly. |

Since I made the switch to wine I've noticed a considerable boost in performance when running one client. However, when I log a second client in, the lag I experience makes the game unplayable. The first logged client simply stutters and has about the same quality I was used to when running multi clients, but the 2nd logged client I can't even hover over icons without a game breaking delay. |

I'm unable to right click on anything under WINE without using an external mouse. Under CIDER I could do the standard cmd-click to enter the right-click menus. This makes WINE fairly unplayable in the default mode. Is there some other way to get a right-click without using an external mouse? |

It does not. However, someone gave me the tip to turn on "Emulate three button mouse" in XQuartz. After doing that, I'm able cmd-click. |

I just launched Eve today and found out it forced me on wine. It came with a lot of graphical issues (like shimmering effect on stargate / ship propulsion completely messed up, many UI settings reset, etc.) Looking at the monitor, "Wine" and "Wine server" are using much more resources than previous Cider, and the computer has become slow as **** out of the game when running. What the hell ?
How to revert? back to Cider please ?? |

edit : also, when asking my drones to return to drone bay, they come back, but the drone UI continue to show them in space -_-
Just found out if you go to "Eve Launcher" > "Preferences" you can change the wrapper back to Cider, though i'm sure that option won't last long
Edit: Found that by reverting back to Cider that my kill marks now show again on my Skiff |

I had the same problem. "Cider is now deprecated". CCP Snorlax knows that Wine does not work for me. I guess he wants me to quit playing EVE. If "deprecated" becomes "removed", that's exactly what I will do. This new "free to play" option does not interest me at all. |

Hi CCP Snorlax!
A few of us would love to switch and experience the performance boosts, but are holding of due to retina resolution issues.
Is there anything we could do to have native resolution in Wine?
Thank you! |

Note that running in fullscreen with 3k resolution or higher may cause you to run out of memory, though. It is not advised in heavy scenes with settings on high.

Is there anything we could do to have native resolution in Wine? Thank you! I'm not seeing issues on my MacBook Pro with a Retina screen, nor on my iMac 27" 5K screen. If you haven't tried Wine yet, give it a go - you can log on to Singularity first if you are concerned about running into issues. Note that running in fullscreen with 3k resolution or higher may cause you to run out of memory, though. It is not advised in heavy scenes with settings on high.
Thank you for your work on this.
I personally still can't get the right resolution in windowed mode without having everything off screen.

Native 2880x1800 display. Fullscreen works flawlessly in Wine at 2880x1800, however I loved playing at 2560x1600 windowed and swapping between clients/OOC browser on Cider (no lag). Setting to any resolution in windowed results in items being off screen.
Cider settings: works great in windowed: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5aqzlk5tyeqxuto/Screenshot%202016-09-06%2022.31.33.png?dl=0
Is there a possible work-around available? |

Where in the filesystem is the Wine application file? I need to re-annoint my USB Overdrive configuration to run in the specific app - I lost my extra mouse buttons in the switch. |

I do see that the Dock reports the app as ~/Library/Application\ Support/EVE\ Online/p_drive/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/SharedCache/wine/bin/wine
But usbOverdrive does not recognize that file as an app - I suspect it is looking for a package with an Info.plist, such as ~/Library/Application\ Support/EVE\ Online/p_drive/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/SharedCache/cider-EveOnlinePremium-iso-011059-nodata-skel/EVE\ Online.app |

If anyone else needs to use USB Overdrive, here's how I made mine work.
- In the Control Panel, duplicate your existing setting and point them at the Eve Launcher.
- Quit and open
~/Library/Preferences/com.usboverdrive.settings.plist in a plain text editor.
- Find the dictionary in the settings array that contains the settings cloned in step 1. Change the following values so they read as follows. Note that you will see these values enclosed in xml tags but forum restrictions prevent properly writing them here
app:Wine exec:wine

Per this reddit post this morning: Where are the useful "My Documents" files on the wine OS X client?
I have tried looking everywhere for chatlogs and overview.yaml files and have found nothing at all... anyone have any idea?
