Has anyone tried this rig yet, and if so, what's your experience with it? Do you see a noticable effect on your salvage attempts?

It's only worthwhile if you've set up a dedicated salvaging ship, and only if you intend to dedicate a lot of time to salvaging- it takes a quite a while to recoup the time or isk needed to make a rig. You just find that not quite so many wrecks take more than one cycle to salvage. ------

Edited by: Christopher Dalran on 09/03/2007 15:28:22 Put 2 on one ship and go out to a 0.0 that you have permission to be in. Fly around and loot/salvage all the battleship wrecks because nobody can be botherd to slow down and mess with them because the bounties on killing them are so high, they only stop when officer or faction loot as possible but they still dont mess with the wreck itself. With good skills and rigs you can make several rigs an hour. If you have 0.0 access get it and you'll recoup in no time flat.
edit - rat spawns drop more loot more frequently than mission spawns, i'm guessing this was done to encourage people to encounter each other from time to time as opposed to being in their own deadspace area all the time.
Rig prices are ONLY high because very few people seem to have figured this out. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

I have a Catalyst with triple salvage tackle rigs.
I'd say it halves the time I spend salvaging (or better) in some missions.
The limit on how fast I can salvage now is how fast I can get within 20km of a wreck. Once I get AC 5 and fit a T2 burner that should improve a lot. ------------ Ezra Cornell

I recently fitted my Cormorant I use for salvage with Salv Tackle I and have noticed some slight change in frequency of getting slavage but in my opinion it's not much better than running multiple salvagers and a newer player is better served not spending the isk on buying this rig on the market, if you can get one built(like I did) it's worth trying out.

No it's not worth it. No I haven't tried it, but I don't need to.
Destroyer(well any ship heh) with 4 salvagers will salvage almost everything on the 1st cycle 99% of the time. (lvl 4 salvaging...)
The ONLY exception to this is salvaging t2 or commander/officer(?) ships. I salvaged a zealot wreck on sisi just to try it, and with 4 salvagers it took around 10 cycles of fail before it worked. A curse wreck on the other hand worked on 1st cycle so...mebbe bad luck. This all is moot tho because you will likely be in 0.0 in order to salvage those, which means you gonna blowed up sooner or later, so best not waste rigs on a disposable ship.(not to mention they only drop t2 materials, not t1)
Everytime I think of a reason to stick one of them on, I can think of more reasons not to. IF ccp were to ever restrict ships to only being able to mount ONE salvage module...THEN it would be worth it, untill then, forget about it is my advice.

We have a couple of Cormorants we setup as dedicated salvage ships. 3 x salvage bonus rigs, and mix the high with salvagers & tractor beams. The more wrecks you can pull in & clear the faster you can move on.

totally worth it i'm running a stabber with 3 tackles atm and switched "down" to 2salvagers/4tractors recently (they could fix the speed penalties that are currently _not_ stacking with cargo expanders' penalty -> dual speed rape) satisfied as i am, i'll go for a triple-tackle iteron V with 2 salvagers and 5 nanofibers next

I cant agree, it sometime take me over 5 minutes to salvage some damn BS wreck (using 4 salvagers on it). Usimg destroyer with 4 salvagers and 4 tractors.
Also in some complexes there are cans whitch use salvaging+archeology/hacking to get loot from them, someon idea if salvaging rig also help with those ?

Stupid question: What exactly does a Salvage tackler ? a) Reduces the time to salvage a wreck or b) increases the probability that you SUCCESSFULLY salve a wreck
From my understanding it is b) ??
So is it worthwile ? If a) then no - it isn¦t, if b) then yes - it is worth it as you then get in average 10% more salvage parts per rig. Over time it¦s very worthwile.

actually it's a).
the skill and the rigs only increase the chance of a "successful salvage" (by successful I mean "you salvaged" or you salvaged but there was nothing in it") . Wether you get anything from it or not, that's purely luck. -------

Edited by: Pusspuss on 12/03/2007 13:52:59 I run a probe with 3 salvage rigs, 2 salvagers, 3 tractor beams, expanded cargo, cap rechargers and afterburners. I pull it out after I have completed a level 4 mission and suck in all the loot. It takes me an extra 20 minutes to complete a multi stage mission on average and it increases the revenues from around 10 mill to over 30 million.
It cost me 120 mill to set up the ship and I have done about 15 missions with it and made back several times the original setup cost.
Yes, it is worth it, in my opinion.
Of course if anyone looks at me I am dead in this ship... I do not tell my pvp buddies that I have this ship... I hide this ship in empire space and use it for carebearing when my finances are low...

I have a dedicated Cormorant for slavaging, 5 salavger and 3 tractor beams, the main problem I have is the cap running out due to the amount of power the salvager modules use.
If I were to put 2 salvage rigs and a cap recharge rig, would I would be able to put less salvage modules onto a wreck to achieve the same result. If so then I could kick 2 salvage modules off and put 2 more tractor beams on. Would make the salvaging about 40% quicker because I could pull in 5 wrecks at a time instead of 3.
Can someone confirm this for me before I get the rigs.

Compared to salvaging 4 wrecks on the first cycle 99% of the time. I can salvage a mission 4 times faster than you can, so it is not worth it in the slightest.

You are better off going for a bigger ship to get better cap. I use a Cyclone for my work and very rarely have any blank spots where I'm just traveling to wrecks, so overall speed doesn't make any difference. You get a bigger cargohold too, so any cargo expanders have a better effect. Even running everything at full blast - sensor boosters, salvagers and tractors it barely dints the cap. I can even run a med SB and Invul 2 as well should I need the little extra protection.

Huginn is the best ship for salvaging, arr. The only thing you need to watch out for is getting popped. You don't want to be caught salvaging in a recon. N-uh. No way.
Not that I've ever done it myself of course.

The Impression I got from savaging is not that your salvage skill gives a flat success-fail chance of getting anything at all, but that the chance also affects how much salvage you get if you are successful.
Currently im running a Cormorant with 4 tractors and 4 salvagers + 2 salvage rigs.
I tried a before and after once when my skill was going up and from a level 2 deadspace i did get more after (spread out over ~50 wrecks) from a 5% or 10% raise in access bonus.
My guess is that you get a success now if you salvage anything at all, but that is from a potential pool of say 20 units of salvage. If you have 20% access bonus you can get 4 items and it will report "success". but with tackles and 40% access bonus you would get about 8 items.
If that guess is correct, a tackle would add about 2 million in a 20 million salvage mission, generating profit after 7 such missions.
ymmv, Im just guessing.

Salvage ship: heretic, 4 tractors, 4 salvagers, 2 rigs.. still runs with almost 500, and then watch the ab kick in. Time si money, and a dessy is just a bit too slow.

The BEST salvage ship (imho), is the Stabber. It has many of the most important features required for a salvage ship, as folllows:
Cargo bay: 420m3 is usually more than enough room. If not, you can throw expanders in any of it's 3 lower slots.
Speed: It only has a base velocity of 235, but the Stabber has a special ability bonus of 5% max velocity per level trained. It can also handle having "both" an AB (deadspace) and a MWD (open space) outfitted at the same time.
Capacitor: I've yet to run out of capacitor during salvage runs. I usually leave AB on constantly, and with all uppers firing tackle and tractors, I've never had a problem. Using a MWD may need to be monitored.
Mod Slots: 6 upper slots which can be used for tackle and tractor beams. 3 medium slots for AB, MWD, rechargers, shields, whatever. 3 lower for intertials, expanders, overdrives, etc..
Defense: While not a meaty tank, it can take more of a beating than destroyers and frigates.
Cost efficient: If you lose a stabber, you won't cry about it.
I've tried every reasonable ship (nothing T2 or BC or higher) from all races and the Stabber fits the bill perfectly.

I found 3 salvage rigs to be worth it. I changed my setup from 4 salvagers/4 tractors to 3 salvagers/5 tractors because i had so many fewer fails. Btw, please buy my rigs...
Also, the salvaging skill and rig both only increase your %chance of a successful salvage. The loot and salvage components are generated when the wreck is formed. The only thing you can affect is how long it takes you to get the goods. Good evening, I'll be your ALT for this post. Can I offer you some troll or whine to start? |

Unless you're dedicating a pair of spots and a rig slot on your main combat ship to Salvaging, there is no way in lawyer hell it's worth it.
With your average dedicated Salvage boat - a destroyer kitted with 4x tractor, 4x salvager I, a Burner/MWD as per your preference, and the rest filled with cap / cargo items, you don't need a rig enough to justify the 13 mil you'd spend on it. The drawback is worse than the effect is good (cut to max speed, come on? how about something workeable like structure hp/armor/something). 5 - 10% speed reduction for 10% more likelihood to get a succesfully completed salvage cycle? How very meh.
The limiting factors when you're doing a salvage run are in order:
1. Distance from wreck to wreck Controllable by controlling your fighting style to some extent and minimized by tractors and AB/MWD.
2. Busy tractors Because salvagers only have 5k range, you have to run a tractor on a max distance wreck for 30 seconds + shutoff lag, more if you are looting it.
3. Lack of cap Salvage boats eat cap for breakfast, and until you have high skills and good modules this can get annoying when running your MWD with four cans bouncing along behind you and four salvagers doing their stuff.
4. Cargo space (ignore if not looting) Gotta keep what is it-enough m3 for the max wieght of a given wreck free and those #$%$ing metal scraps are the worst thing ever.
5. Salvagers failing to complete a wreck. Ya, it's annoying. But unless you are the official pimp-daddy master of kill placement and have all of your wrecks deposited in your 5km 'bubble of doom' you are much more likely to run out of beams to pull wrecks than salvagers to salvage them. Two per wreck is all you should ever need. I would say 90% of the time two salvages finish the job in one or two cycles. Yes they occasionally seem to have issues and last four or five, but for those wrecks you beam 'em and drag them around with you.
In short a salvage rig isn't the best rig for salvaging, and with a 13mil pricetag I can't imagine it ever would be. If the rig gave a bonus to the likelihood of drops (it doesn't) or to the range of salvage modules (fap fap fap) I would throw down 39 mil on three of them the second I get off of work.
As it is you're better off finding something that covers you in another way - better cap, more cargo, speed - the things that are available and really do make salvage quicker and more efficient.

I think it's great that there are two groups of people convinced that the salvage skill (and rig) bonus a) determines the number of tries it takes to get a predetermined number of salvage components, or b) determines the number of components depends on skills and rigs, while the number of tries it takes is independent.
Does any group actually have evidence for their theory? Any numbers? One guys said he got more salvage components after a skill increase, over a spread of maybe 50 wrecks, that's a starting point as far as numbers go. Could any of the hardcore salvagers provide some numbers for with/without rigs? ______________ Join the Family |
