This would actually be nice, too. Good catch.

Never played the old one. "Flat" is in so the current UI is somewhat trendy and minimalist. I think it will come around again, what's old is new.
My biggest issue with the game is the windows on windows bit. This is actually Windows 286 thinking the way the data is presented now.
If I can get a token for UI change, I'd like to use it to redesign the windows, combining data from some of the current ones into single ones. The chat UI needs some love, and the people/places/probe window is just a mess.
Being able to have multiple 'configurations' would be good too so you can prioritize what you are doing in different configs, but that speaks to being a bit more customization than it has now.

The windows seem pretty minimalistic to me and I don't argue about the UI ... ... because you'd probably be right ... ... soooooooo ....... ... I'm curious what you can come up with?

Oh gaud don't get me started on this "looks like it was created by a 4th grader with crayons and construction paper, metro gui, unified mobile device look alike" BS of an UI. There were many, many threads on this exact topic both before and after the change. I don't see CCP suddenly (or ever) retracting this abomination.
And yes, this is my opinion. Your's may be different, but statically not likely. (based on previous threads on the subject) |

So am I!!! LOL!
Really, all UI comes down to preference.
That's why the Overview is really awesome in that you can pick and choose what's on each tab and how many tabs there are in use. If the different 'elements' of the UI could be done in the same way, with different configuration files you could load, it would be completely awesome.
Instead of piles of windows, think fixed frames. You pick how the screen 'looks' with the frames and what's in them, along with their various sizes. Then you could share the config files, almost like theme files, and the best ones would get massive shares... almost like ship fittings.
You really have two types of data on the UI: Active and Passive. Active being stuff you need to see 'right now' or always. Passive is stuff you use to look something up or do when you're docked or not doing anything at serious risk. Those two concepts alone should dictate what you see and how you see it. So your 'space' config could be completely different from your 'docked' config.
Things like Dscan and Overview show almost identical data and that's normally a indicator of something that could be combined and made more concise.
Probes/Anomaly scanner is just bizzare since you have to bring up the big Map just to actually use probes. It's a 3D graphic 'mini-game' and pretty much a drain on the actual utility of it, especially those of us playing on a single monitor. Probes should be 'smarter' than that and you 'sick' them on a target. They should be able to be outfitted like a ship, made smarter or faster or more accurate. Then they feed you back information whenever they have it. Cheap probes might be able to get you a ship target in 10 minutes or WH in 5. Expensive or high end ones get you both in seconds if you have the right implants and the data is resolved in the Anomaly window. It also makes capturing and/or shooting a probe something of value so it should be allowed.
So you can combine UI clean up concepts with game play improvements as well. I'll put more thought into it and see if I can mock something up.

We are staring for hours on the neocom. So why not make it customable? If you like colors, you can get colors. Or grouping. One design, however good it may be, will never fit everyone. Let the players decide what they like. Maybe even add some "space" element to separate things. I would like colors. |

Circumstantial Evidence wrote:2014 UI change dev blog thread.CCP Arrow wrote:[This is an excerpt - link to original post] Our primary goal was to make the icons recognizable once you had learned what they represent, it is an impossible task to make abstract icons unique from each other but still perfectly represent what they stand for when you see them for the first time. The most important thing is that it will become easy to memorize after a certain time, but we know it takes time and we understand the frustration of having to do that after having had them unchanged for so long. Our studies show however that those who are coming in as new players are remembering these icons much quicker than before and one of the core reasons for it is because the icons don't use specific colors. Then we don't store information about colors to remember icons but rather focus on their shapes. I'm puzzled by results of their studies...
We all use color signals in RL: - red - for danger/do not enter/etc - yellow - warning/pay attention - green - go freely. As result if you see red colored sign you don't need to understand text or picture. You just know that you better be somewhere else.
We don't need to have such signs in special places and have unique shape to read the information.
But this dev said that we should have signals based on shape like: - triangle - stop/danger - square - warning - circle - go freely?

The very ******* fact that colours are recognized faster and easier than symbols should turn this whole study around. What it could be is that they are correct, but are ignoring everything around it. They don't give information about how they tested it, but when they say it was about new players only, then the new players obviously remembered the shapes first, because they take more effort for the brain to work on.
Still, for fast identification out of a blob of symbols colours are vastly superior. I don't think they actually considered that. They only concentrated on "what's faster for them to remember them" and then ignored everything else. The result would be that it actually takes people now longer to find the correct symbol for what they want, even though they're being remembered faster.
Which means that CCP didn't quite realize that there is a difference between learning them and actually using them quickly in the game. With SHAPES, one always has to look more thorough, while with COLOURS, a quick glance is sufficient!

I remember using these icons for years and absolutely loved them because it was super quick to find everything. Reference for you newer players: http://i.imgur.com/pBd0j8v.jpg
Then when CCP suddenly made sweeping changes, I was a bit turned off like I was with the undocking button change. But after a while and many phantom misclicks to the old spot, I got used to the undocking button's new location and I'm perfectly okay with it now.
So being the good sport I am, I figured I'd get used to these new icons pretty quickly and all would be good and I'd never notice the change. However, it's been years since these changes were made and I still find myself misclicking way to often. These "new" and "updated" UIs are not good. They're not quick and easy to distinguish because of their tiny images that are all very similar and they're all the same color.
Of course there will be people who like the new icons, but honestly they're not effective. Which is what the UI should all be about; something that is clean, easy to use, and quick to use. I would have loved to see an update on the icons, but with each one keeping it's flare and colorful appearence. The fact that after a couple years of using them, I still cannot get used to them should say something about the design implementation.
