Once again I find myself curious about my fellow capsuleers. What made you abandon mortality? Why are you here? For what purpose did you leave everything else behind?
For me it was simply desperation. I was born of a Matari mother and a Caldari father. They were caring parents, and taught me the ways of the world at a young age. I loved them both deeply. But what I have never told anyone is that they were Gurista operatives. I was born an outlaw, to a family of outlaws. I learned to lie, cheat, swimdle, and kill, all by the age of ten. Had nothing changed I would have likely been dead by now, a crew on some gurista ship, killed by capsuleers.
But years ago my life changed. A Federation convoy hauling medical supplies flew dangerously close to one of the Gurista's outposts. The one I was living at with my family. My father and mother served on the same ship. They were tasked with holding the convoy down. Unfortunately a Flycatcher class interdictior with Cruiser backup does nothing against a Federation surprise attack. What had seemed like several hauling ships were in fact empty hulls meant only for bait. An entire fleer of Catalyst Class destroyers jumped on my families small gang. 200 to 15. The odds were horrendous, they were killed to a man. After that I had nothing left. The Federation destroyed anything that was not a habitation module and flew off. I had nobody, and nowhere to go.
For several years I roamed around, scraping by. Nobody would take a scrawny 19 year old that had worked for the Gurista's. Nobody except the Caldari State. They did not care who I was, or who I had been. All they cared about was if I was willing to fight for an Ideal. The ideal that every man, woman, and child has the right to make their own future. I said I was willing. And after years of schooling and training here I stand before you. A proud warrant officer in the Caldari service.
What about you. What is your story?
Some call me insane. If the universe is sane, then I embrace that label.

When I was a little girl, one day, the Archbishop came round to talk to my mother, as she was quite heavily involved in the Church, and was quite the organiser, arranging such things as ice cream socials, baked goods competitions, raffles and the like.
Anyway, while she was in another room, discussing things with the Archbishop, I had been left to my own devices, and I decided that a jam doughnut had committed various sins, and should be sacrificed to the Red God in punitive redemption. So I took a cake spork, and with the toy altar from my dolls house, I sacrificed the jam doughnut to the Red God.
At which point my mother, and the Archbishop, concerned at the noise, entered the room. I said "mummy, I sacrificed a doughnut to the Red God because it was Unrighteous", to which my mother responded "Valerie Valate, you clean up this mess right now !" The Archbishop, however, was quite amused, and said "It seems young Valerie is quite the zealous one".
It was then, that I realised that I was destined for greatness.

To get away from my mother! sheesh!
No, but really being a capsuleer was really my best way out from a life of drudgery as a part of my clan's business operation. Since my older sister is next in line for Head of Table (basically, the 'CFO' of our collective clan-owned businesses), I probably would have been pressured into playing the role of her controller, basically doing all of the grunt work to make sure her plans went smoothly, as is tradition. It's not a bad life, and I've been trained to live it, but there's just no room to be your own person in that role. You live for clan and family, period. I love my family, but I'm just not cut out for that.
Luckily, my twin brother Festuvar and I both tested capsule compatible and that changed my life. Being a capsuleer gives me the best chance to carve out my own business and do things my way. I've got the skills, instincts, savvy, and business sense to do big things on my own and space is the best venue to do that. The high level of violence throughout the Cluster means big money if you know how to position yourself and being a capsuleer gives me the most flexibility to take advantage of a significant number of profit margin opportunities as they arise.
But yeah, a lot of it is getting away from my mom... |

Subjectively, I've always been one, for as long as I can remember.
(That's only about a year and a half, though.)
Less-subjectively, I seem to have done it because I had something to prove, definitely to my family, maybe to myself, too. Persons of mixed blood aren't looked on very kindly in the State, or on Achura, and I was a murderer's daughter as well, so childhood was probably pretty unbearable, and left me with some issues to work out. I'm not sure I ever really did, though.
I'm not really sorry I don't remember it anymore. |

Reasons change with time and I find what compelled me to the stars is not the same as what keeps me here.
When I first underwent the process to make capsuleer, it was to explore. The opportunity leave my home in a far flung corner of the Federation to experience space in a way few would ever be able to was irresistible. Don't get me wrong, I loved my home and my family was everything one could ask for. I just need more and my parents understood that. To me space was the unknown and the unknown has always called for me. I remember one time I ditched a week of secondary school explore a small canyon just outside of town. I did that simply because I had never been their before and want to explore it.
My reasons currently are much different. Since I became a capsuleer, I've seen and experienced so much. I saw the dangerous facing the Cluster: pirates, drug lords, megalomaniacs, religious fanatics, and the mysterious aggressors. More importantly I found love among the stars and married an Amarrian woman, Leliel. However our love was cut short when she was kidnapped from the SOE station in the Sigga star system, at that moment my life became clear.
The reason I live among the stars is to find Leliel! To find who took her! To return her to her family! To make sure those operate outside the law or threaten the safety of the Cluster are never able to harm another family in the way mine was harmed! |

I began my career as a pod pilot in order to wreak vengeance upon them that would tarnish the illustrious name of the Ephesianos line.
Growing up in an Amarr Navy household was very regal in the times of my youth. We had some of the most lovely slaves and a house to die for. My grandfather was an admiral and my father was working up the chain of command as well. My mother was a home maker and as for myself; I spent endless hours playing with the help. Helping the help so they could finish their chores and when we were done, we did what I wanted to do. Which was play.
Before I could get myself shipped off to military school my grandfather and father both deployed with the Golden Fleet into Jovian space. The Battle of Antioch was short lived and their ships were obliterated. Waking up in home vats, returning from the warfronts early, the house prepared a feast.
A feast interrupted by Amarr officials claiming the Ephesianos lines as well as many others were broken due to lack of faith. Weapons design, shields, armor and intel had nothing to do with it.
The last I saw of my home was it's sack by Amarr hands. My mother in chains and my fathers ritualistic suicides to see me sent away. Those slavers even killed my friends. Our house slaves.
Since then I have renounced slavery, as any True Amarrian should.
And know this, there is no honor left in the cesspool of Amarr culture and religious zealotry. Only animals with enough gun power to slave yet not enough spirit to save.

To put it simply the real reason I became a Capsuleer was to prove something after Malkalen. After my parents were killed in the Caldari Invasion I felt as if I had abandoned them somehow since I had left the service for C.A.S. and a degree. When I was found to be a match genetically, I took the opportunity. I felt if I made a difference as a Capsuleer, maybe I would feel less like my parents died for nothing. If I could achieve something they never had the chance to maybe that would make up for their loss.
Or maybe I just wanted revenge. Ah the dreams of the na+»ve.
