Hello fellow capsuleers!
So I've been working on a little project making my home "smart". I've been looking into some options. I know a lot of Eve players are into tech and there's plenty engineers blowing up space pixels. SO I want to ask does anyone have some experience with smart homes?
I'm looking for something that is all-in-one and that I don't have to control with my phone. Voice would be nice.
So far I've found these two systems:
http://meethomeone.com/explore/ (seems pretty cool! Love the touch control and they are launching soon)
and
http://oomi.com/ (I don't like the idea of carrying around a huge tablet control, but I like the accessories)
Anyway any thoughts on this would be great.
thanks in advanced and good hunting.

How smart it have to be to be considered suitable for a smart man? Does it have to read news to you every day, recognize your mood and play you an apropriate ambient music? Clean after you make a mess in the kitchen? Make a shopping list, buy all the things and bring them home? Does it have to eatch your health and keep you on a strict diet, and encourage you to make some physical exercises? Or maybe just being smart yourself will suffice for you?

Haha. I'm actually looking to automate my thermostat, lights and some appliances to turn on/off based on a consumption maximum. It's just optimizing energy consumption, more of a hobby and less of a pressing need.

Not at all an expert here, I've just read some articles by journalists who also aren't tech experts, but... Seems one should be aware that all smart devices can be hacked/infected. If they have an electronic brain and they connect to something via wireless, there can be a way in. But how's the user to set up firewalls for things like heating systems and refrigerators?
If I were a for-profit hacker, I'd go for turning off the heating system and hot water off at in midwinter 4:00 AM early Monday morning. Everybody misses work and school, and spends 1-2 cold days trying to figure out why. Then, after a couple of days calling utility companies' customer service, blah, blah, they pay the ransom to get service restored, just to go back to work and school. Profit, everybody's happy, ka-ching!
(Sorry, paranoid vision of the possible near future. I read too much The Economist. Knowledgable people, give us the straight dope).
