Edited by: Esurnir on 15/03/2007 19:34:22 I agree about weapon design.
They is only one weapon for the moment that give a single little sense of "power" in this game. It's the torpedo.
The weapons next to it would perhaps be the lasers effect. Mainly because of the (unrealistic) diameter of the beam and the fact that the beam actually stay in space long enough in space that you notice it. Which make the revelation dread the only dread so far that give the sensation of tearing the shield apart (the long beam that is).
The most disappointing weapon sound and visual effect wise is the railgun. I watched a moros in action, and wtf ? That pew pew was a 1 meter wide slug of antimater that on impact should have made the tsar bomba detonation sound like a riotgun. ----

Realistically speaking, I'd be more likely to run away screaming from a 1 meter-wide slug of antimatter moving at near relativistic velocities. :) But yeah, the resulting impact is fairly "meh".

Let us not forget the #1 downsize to extreme long range weaponry...
Fuel... that missle can only carry so much propellant
Those shells you fire at near lightspeed will slow down over time.. sure it may take a hell of a long while but eventually, solar winds.. stray dust particles.. all will effect anything out in space.
Another reason why such extreme long rang combat is infeasible.. targeting.. shooting at something 1000 km away and you have a small target... Shoot at something 100,000 km away and your target is even smaller.. even .1mm off the mark will translate into hundreds of KM off target by the time it gets to the destination.
The farther away something is.. the more perfect the targeting solution must be.. the farther the target is.. the most chance they will move and render your extreme longshot useless.
If eve used actual physics like this.. capital ships wouldn't move at all in combat or they would miss. We are spoiled by supposed turret tracking.

The faster the speed of the weapon's projectile, be it particle or wave, the less perfect targeting needs to be. Energy weapons are coming, whether we like it or not. The more they untangle the quantum foam, the more and more action at a distance looks feasible (much in the same way a moon trip looked feasible to Newton, despite his lack of context for the speeds and power necessary to acheive it).

AFAIK, REAL space combat will get annoying. EVE has alot of something that real space does not...friction.
I have played some space sims that lacked friction. Most battles ended up as jousts since you kept moving when you cut your engines. Also...missiles only need propellant for a short burst to reach max speed while using remaining propellant to make minor course changes as necessary.

Just nerf the super stapital ships, if you can afford to lose it you can afford to lose it. Its only a matter of time before all .4s will be camped with mother, hugin, lach with the mother xfering to the uber fast locking recons.

yep
but a space battle in near future = 2-10 perma damaged ships costing 2-5 countries billions of dolooars
