Removing the nebulae and backgrounds would suit some people, but not others.
I like having them since they add some variety and they provide some reference for locating things in solar systems - e.g. I know that the station I dock at is located left of the sun and just at the corner of the U-shaped bit of nebula.
But given the fact that we're in pods, with all our sensory inputs fed to us through electronics and filtered by advanced computer systems I think we should be able to have the pod render the view however we like.
i.e. make the backgrounds a client-selectable option.

The nebula on the background? the big red/green/blue 'gas' clouds that are system wide? look.. there isnt one, its just starry black... its a bug that makes the nebula not load..

Go into a station. Open map. Exit station. Close map. If I recall you have to close the map before it can auto-close from exiting the station.

Looks awesome without all those nebulae. I'd definitely like a setting making it possible to turn them off, not like it would be hard to implement in the graphics options screen.
Or, alternatively, make random systems black space. It would add to the diversity of EVE solar systems, which are sometimes lacking slightly.

Edited by: Hana Brenecki on 12/03/2007 11:27:48 I don't mind the way that the warp tube looks. Sure it's a bit rough around the edges but the feeling of being in black space certainly makes up for it. Maybe if they give us black space they'll be tempted to pretty the warp tube up a little. But I'm not fussed. Black space would be enough to make me happy.
And I would have gone a black uniform too but there doesn't seem to be an Achur option for that. Maybe with Ambulation we'll get some more colours to play with...

I'm sure there are plenty of PvPers out there that would be really happy to be able to put the graphics into "barebones tactical mode" which would consist of entire ships being represented by a single wireframe primative.

I prefer a completely black space because it feels more immersive and atmospheric. Nothing to do with wanting a 'tactical view'. I'm not much of a PvPer and I don't play the game in a hardcore tactical kind of way. I just like black space, aesthetically. It feels more like you're in actual space, as opposed to in a tank of water that someone put dry ice into. I actually believe that cosmetically speaking, it's better to have darkness punctuated with twinkly stars than fluffy coloured clouds everywhere. But that's just me.
Of course, I respect that others do not think as I do about this. Hence - having it as an option is probably the best way to keep people like me happy and not annoy the rest who actually prefer the fluffy stuff.
The nebulae in different systems aren't exactly identical at the moment - in some nebulae you can actually point your view in a certain direction and have a black sky which works really nicely until you have to move your view. In other nebulae you can't do this as there is literally gaudy colour in all directions.

black space... would be so cool - personally got sick of these backgrounds long time ago - make playing harder... many time while npc/mission/pvp had to look around and look for enemy ships and can't find them quick because some 'uber cool' nebulae is in background with same colors as enemy ship making it impossible to distinguish... there is option to turn off sounds (which I use, of course, as sounds in eve are so... boring), should be one similar for backgrounds...

Colourful universe Vs "true" space look. Deadspace clouds on / off. Ship textures - I'd like the tactical overview to be able to go into a wireframe combat mode.

You just can't make subtle posts on a forum. Half the people won't get it as can be seen from half the people here... uh, not getting it.
Anyway, SUPER /SIGNED for the ability to turn on/off the background nebula. I have left areas of eve soley because I could not stand the bright pink or whatever background. There are shades of background that make it almost impossible to tell if your modules are pulsing red. Kind of crap when a graphics feature gets in the way of playability.

This has to do with session changes i.e., undocking, jumping through a gate while either having your map open or closing it just as you change session or split second after changing session.
Someone was offering to sell instructions...lol. I found that the undocking one works best but every time I do it, it happens by chance. If I try to make it happen, it never does.

I don't know about shutting backgrounds on or off, but I do think that in the new build of EVE coming down the pipe there should be a MASSIVE amount of variety to the backgrounds. There are hundreds of different types of natural celestial bodies in space that are not accounted for in EVE out in the distance.
Personally I would love for some systems to be entirely black without nebula's or not have the nebulas take up 100% of the area unless you're right up close to them. Which leads to the suggestion that some nebulas should be seen further away and as you jump systems it get's larger and closer. That would also give us better ideas of where geographicly we are in the galaxy.
But the overall point for me is the backgrounds need a much greater variety, black space would be fabulous to come across once and awhile. _____________________________________________________________________ "My once immaculate white pants are now stained from the weak and innocent. What about some systems where there is almost no light? you know some suns die and stuff, so there is so little light that you'd only really recognize ships because of their navigation lights.
IMHO that'd be cool, like flying on instruments ( overview ) And ofc make the systems more diverse some with nebs some without etc etc anyone found my marbles? |

hi I agree with making space black. Remove nebulas and such stupid stuff from missions too.. Sun and nebulas are to bright, it hurts player's eyes.

Edited by: Drizit on 13/03/2007 12:06:45 I agree with having the option to have them or not. Those who want them on can still have them and those of us who would prefer them turned off can have our way as well. Is this so much to ask?
I have found the bug is something to do with the new map zoom. I have a screenshot of my Indy against a black sky with "you are here" in a box right on top of it. Since I could see my Indy, I already guessed that's where I was. When you zoom right in to the max magnification on the map, you can almost see your own ship. When you close the map at that point, the client "forgets" to load the nebulae and, in my case "forgets" to remove the labels.

how about we just remove the graphics alltogether and just play with our overviews, better yet make it a plug in for MS Office!!!
actually i think having it optional is a good idea, sometimes i would like to turn the sky off once in a while.

Sign me up for seeing the cold black depths of space . . . without all the "clouds" and other crud.
I'm fine with it being an "option". Mine will quickly be switched to "off" so I can see space as it truly is.

Quote: About a month ago there was a thread about this thing, and I believe Kieron said that he would give the proposition to the designers or such. So hopefully weŚll have an optional, black space :D
Okay, that's quite a bit different to what someone else posted in this thread a couple pages ago, saying that it was definitely going to happen.
I do very much hope that they give us the choice. For those whining about how black space would be awful - well that's all the more reason to have it as optional, then you can play it your way, and I'll play it mine. Currently, Elite on the Commodore 64, for all its low resolution pixelness, still has a more convincing feeling of being in 'deep space' than EVE. With the option of black space, that would certainly change in EVE's favour. I will cry if they fix the map bug and don't give us optional black space in return...
