Is there a way to setup a destination so that when a threat turns up all you have to do is hit the "A" key and warp outta there. Last night I only just managed to survive with a little bit of hull left, after clicking to get my base details on screen, then clicking again to warp away - too time consuming!
Cheers

If you don't mind warping to 15 km of a gate, set a waypoint in your autopilot (the next system, one where the gate is not behind asteroids) and when threat comes, engage autopilot. You may also align to that gate when mining.
This should help a lot.
If this is not enough, you should move to the extreme point of the belts, as fas as you can from the center (triangle beacon) of the belt and align to gate with an autopilot waypoint ready. This should leave you enough time to enter warp as the attacker is coming to lock you and enter the warp scrambler range.
This may still not be enough if some interceptor comes in the belt and rushes to lock you, basically, you have to react fast, and clicking warp is faster warping than activating autopilot (there's sometimes some delay...). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron...

With the righ-click menu you can warp to every place in the system you are. All stations, asteroid belts, jumpgates and all your bookmarks are listed there.

Don't mine in the middle of a belt. Orient to your safe spot. Consider the use of WCS.

If you survived with hull you were getting attacked by NPC rats, by the time a PC pirate has hit you, you can't escape anyways. The solution with NPC rats is to kill 'em or tank 'em.

You could do missions and mine the asteroids in the mission after completing it but before reporting it in.
For example, Downing the Slavers is a good mission due to the large number of omber asteroids and the lack of an deadspace gate to get to the first room with all the asteroids.

Edited by: Countess NotFarOut2 on 13/03/2007 15:42:06 As said previously: mine asteroids as far from belt-entry as possible. If you can't find them 50+ km away from center, consider another belt, another system. Align to a stargate, set a destination at least 1 jump away. Set default arrival distance to something else then 15 km. For instance 100 km. The reason is, that fast ships could guess where you are heading and go there to and get you at your jumpdestination. Hitting Autopilot is always faster then rightclick, choose and jump. Ofcourse disable autopilot after jump and hide in a station.

Edited by: Tutsunucann on 13/03/2007 16:08:37 If you're just worried about being jumped on by NPC rats, the simplest thing to do is set your autopilot ahead of time with a destination system other than the one you're mining in.
When you're in need of a quick getaway, just activate the autopilot, and it immediately will warp you to the stargate leading to that destination system. Ans, as someone else mentioned, you can align your ship in advance to make warping out happen faster.
Solo Mining, general tips -
1) Don't go afk, or have EVE minimized. Well, you asked :p
2) Work on your shield / armor skills, it'll buy you time in such situations.
3) Bring some drones with you if your ship has a drone bay. You can launch 1 drone and often, incoming rats will go after the drone before they go after you.
