i play RTS's a lot and from looking at empire maps, bob look like a turtle. I assume their strat is to slowly grow outwards by fighting battles that matter, gaining ever more resources and squishing everyone else into a smaller and smaller space?

The simple answer is: no.
Edit: Turtlers always lose. Always always.
Especially when they don't have time to put up defense to my rushes.

ah. i have no idea how the economy ties into the 'pewpew' aspect of the game, i just thought if an alliance got a big enough resource base they could cut themselves off from the game market entirely and just steam roller everyone, with almost infinite self generated wealth as they mined/produced everything themselves. Essentially creating a second game of eve within eve itself.

Don't think so. BoB held the South West and have expanded into the South East.
To hold this space they will either be spread more thinly or will need to take more members on. More members mean the potential for spies, so they probably won't change their recruiting policies.
BoB's strength is their excellent organisation and communication, but any armour has it's *****s. Taking space is easier than holding it.
Edit: That word above is c-h-i-n-k-s , not offensive in this context and hopefully the mods will allow it to stand as that sentence is nonsensical otherwise.

You never played against a top notch turtle then..

turtlers can win if their opponents suck  (think of titans as experimental units for those of you that have been playing Supreme Commander)

I just wanted to take this time to say that defiler has the best sig in the game.
God how I'd love an mmo version of Elite (Jumpgate didn't cut it), and until I have to aim my guns and fly my ship, EvE isn't anything like Elite.
