While salvaging wrecks this morning in a local belt an unknown Merlin appeared and began approaching. The local security is 0.3 and when he appeared I was in the middle of fending off 2 rats.
I salvage in a destroyer so I had several artillery guns fit to my ship along with a MWD and stasis in the mid section and in the lows a repairer with some other random items. My shields were slightly damaged with one of the rats full and the other just under halfway.
An information look up showed he was just under 30 days old and to my surprise had MWD capabilities and was now screaming at me.
What would you do?

If I'm doing much of anything in a low-sec system and an unknown warps in and starts heading towards me, I generally warp it outta there, particularly if I'm in a gimped (i.e., salvaging) ship.
If he was after you, you just escaped. If he wasn't, the stuff will probably still be there when you get back. You can always keep an eye out in dock and see if he stays in-system.
Just my two cents, but having a MWD is suspicious to me since it requires Nav 4 and AB 4 -- I wouldn't expect that many people living an honest living shoot for those skills in their first 30 days (at least I didn't).

I think I would "demonstrate the power of this fully operational battlestation"..er...Destroyer. :)
What was he screaming? Or is that a metaphor for locking?

By screaming at me I mean his approach increased dramatically. That is how I realized he had a MWD fit. I'm just curious to what others would have done.

Shooting him down would have taught him a valuable lesson. Don't go fast-attack on someone bigger than you when you're a n00b.

Uhm, I had Nav 5 and AB 5 the moment I made my character.

it s possible to obtainan MWD at day one, there are MWD's for sale at 45,000 isk and if you choose the right race/bloodline etc u can have navigation 5 and warp drive operation at the start.

MWDÆs arenÆt that hard to get. Like the above couple of posters said, you can pretty much start out with æem with the right starting character. But you asked what I would have done. Nowadays a starting character can have enough skillpoints to fight PvP and win. It was likely an alt and not a ætrue n00bÆ as it were. In an effort to help other new players there are a couple things to note.
Know your ship!! WhatÆs your optimal range? Do you have any specific weaknesses? What kinds of ships do you think you could take down?
In lowsec space, anyone could be looking for trouble. So if you are in a Salvage ship, do you think you could take down a PvP fit Merlin? Did you see him coming? If you had your scanner open, as you should when an unknown person comes into your system, you could have identified his ship long before he made it to your belt. So you would have seen that it was a Merlin. So you should have asked yourself ôcan I take out a Merlin with my fitö?
You had Arties fit on a Destroyer. That can certainly dish out a damn good bit of damage, especially to a Frig. But the tracking isnÆt all that great and the ROF is omfg slow due to the Destroyer penalty. So your combat potential against a frigate that will likely be in a close orbit is limited.
So what to do if you decide to run from him. Well, knowledge is key. If you plan on sticking around ratting in a system for a while you should have a few safespots. Most pirates looking to bag a ratter will either cycle through belts or use the directional scanner to peg down your belt quick. TheyÆll warp to planets and swing the scanner about to the belts. Ok, so if you do a little bit of pre-planning you can trick æem up sometimes. DonÆt make it easy for a pirate, make it hella tough.

Ah, ok. In any case, my excuse is that the question was "what would *you* have done," not what should I have done.
