Ok, with the advent of more missile happy NPC pirates, I need some help with the options available to defend against missiles.
Now I know about defender missiles but I am an Ammarr and none of my ships have a launcher slot. :-(
So apart from the hit & miss of a smart bomb, is there anything I can install to destroy/ jam etc missiles. I have tried targetting them and trying to use lasers but that doesn't work.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, only smartbombs. Or using the arbitrator cruiser, it has 1 missle slot ;)

I thought the apoc had two launcher slots. Nothing to see here .... move along. |

Apoc has 2, Arb has 1 and the Iquisitor has 3 for the Amarr.
I would suggest using shield hardeners to help a bit

Thanks for the prompt if depressing news :-(
I know some amarr ships have missile slots but neither the Omen or Bestower (which I use for my mining ops)do.
It does surprise me that with the increase in missiles from NPC's, more than 2/3rds of the ships in game have no defense.
Maybe we need some point defense lasers or anti-missile projectile wepons. Something to help counter missile barrages.
(What prompted this was warping into an asteroid belt after chaos patch, and finding 4 pirates at 60-70km. From that range they had my omen down to 60% armor in the time it took me to warp out!!)

I used to park my ship behind a huge roid (big clusters worked really well for this) between me and the npcs then let the roid take all the hits -but this was before the patch and I haven't tested it since but it may be worth a try- a very careful try  Omega Corp Advertisement

Know that one, Giant secure containers are good too. First time I was attacked while mining into and anchored can I couldn't understand why I was taking no damage form the missiles until I realised they were hitting the can doh!
As a follow on, anyone have an idea what the most common damage type of npc mssiles so I can pick the right hardener to use? Would expect explosion, but I see there are theremal and kinetic missiles as well.
Also, any tricks to using a smartbomb on missiles? Is it best to be on auto or manually trigger it.

Seems like thermal hardeners work best, most of the NPC pirates have been using thermal damage missiles.
So, I either fit a thermal hardener for anti-NPC work, or a invulnerability field if I expect to be shot at by any PC pirates also.
That and a named shield booster, plus the usual MWD pretty much covers the med slots on my Rupture.
I also put 2 smaller, faster firing launchers for missile defense, loaded with defenders. If I think I dont need the defenders, I can usually load one of them with another kind of missile.
The 720mm guns usually do most of the dirty work on the pirates anyway.

I think you can look at the log to see what kind of missiles are hitting/have hit you. But in general, I agree with the thermal shield hardener. |

EMP and thermal hardeners work best against the beam-using pirates, since they often use thermal or EMP missiles and the hardeners help against the beam damage too.
Your best bet it to just fly out to where you hunt or mine and let a few pirates shoot you. Check the log to see the names of the missiles that hit you, look up the damage types they do, and fit accordingly. And for only 1 hardener, EMP or thermal are the best choice, since your shields already resist the other damage types a lot better.

Setup a tanked Apoc with medium smartbombs and keep him at the front of your NPC hunting group, a shield-transferring Raven behind him with defenders, and Tempests further back?
