Can someone explain the thought process used when slecting which charges to use with different sized cap boosters?
It seems that a medium cap booster could hold 1X800, 4X200, 5X150, 8X100, 10X75, 16X50, or 32X25. I guess the larger charges would provide a bigger boost quicker and need to be reloaded more often. Is it just a matter of choosing the smallest charge to get the job done?

I don't know about the smaller cap boosters, for frigates and such, because I haven't really ever seen or heard of them being used. However, on the medium boosters, especially on battlecruisers, it is common to fit a single 800 charge in the medium booster, which can sometimes replace almost all your cap from 0.

Boosters are usually an emergency device, so you probably want to fit the biggest charge, and when you use it, use the cap energy it gives wisely to try to run away if you can.
Reasons are because the device has a cycle time that doesn't let you spam the small charges very fast, and because the charge volume is too big to actually carry many in your hold. Pretty much makes it so you only have one shot, maybe two, during a fight, either due to the re-activation time, or due to the fact that you can't carry too many spare charges.

I fly an Exequror cruiser as a support ship when my corp is doing group missions. I fit a medium booster with the 800 charges. The Exeq has about 1000 cap. I can fit 32 more 800's in the cargo bay, and the booster reloads after each use, so I can fire it off about once every 10 seconds. This is useful for group PvE missions. I don't know if I'd want to rely on one in a PvP encounter.

Never seen the point of anything but an 800 maybe a 400.
If you need it you need it all and if you dont need it there's much better things to do with that medium slot and all that cargo space.
If someone was actually to fit a cap booster on a small ship they would probably use littler charges but I've only ever wanted to fit a cap booster on a cruiser or bigger.
