I don't really understand this. The old probes are still on the market. They take normal mins to build, PLUS Strontium Clathrates. Plus I trained Astrometrics to lvl 5 to be able to use the very long distance Observator Probe.
I've not done any scanning for a while, but they seem to have been totally superceded by the new probes, which are easier to build with standard minerals and no Strontium Clathrates, plus the system wide scanner need virtually no skills to use.
I must be missing out on something here, but I'm not sure what!

Edited by: NIkis on 14/03/2007 00:05:51 Easy Probing just got dumbed down, probably because too many tickets complaining it's too hard
Problem is, the logoff sequence still takes 2 minutes or so to complete (without aggro timer), because as usual the devs forget to sync them with the new scanning times. No surprise here

Look at:
Volumes of old vs new probes Capacity on the two different probe launchers Duration on the two different probe launchers
And/or read the two stickies on probing and exploration which explain the difference

The new probes as you say are not for finding ships. They only fit into a Scan probe launcher which have double the scan time it had before. They are also very short range and the system wide version do not report any ship, only exploration sites.
So if you are ship hunting you still need to use the old probes, just make sure you get the new launcher called Recon Probe Launcher.

OK, thanks for the replies all, some more reading is obviously in order.
Just wondered if there was a point to both seperate camps, and whether my level 5 skill still had a point to it and it seems the answer is yes!
Cheers.
