My motherboard has three PCI-express x1 slots (the little stubby ones). They serve absolutely no useful purpose. Even worse, they force me to stick my elderly PCI soundblaster card next to the hulking great monster that is my X1900XT, and somehow it picks up a whining noise that is interference from the fan motor on the heatsink.
Are there any useful things that you can stick into a PCI-E x1 slot? More to the point, are there any decent sound cards? I've been a-googling, but I can't find anything I'd want to buy.
EDIT: Hmm, it appears that Creative demonstrated an Audigy with a PCI-E x1 at CES 2007 in January. I'm obviously being a bit optimistic here.

I once saw a x1300-based card running in a pci-e x1 slot, wich is kinda interesting and understandable since x1300's in x16 slots is like fitting an old WV beetle (the 1960 ones) engine in a porshe carrera 4 frame.
but yes, you are right. ATM pci-e x1 slots are not that used, altho I can see them being more usefull than the ol' AMR slot that some mobos had. -------

Anyone remember those old ISO slots? Big chucky black slots on the motherboards about 10-15 years ago? Nobody used them. Even when PCI cards came out manufacturers still refused to get rid of the ISO slots.
I remember about 9 years ago I bought a load of computer parts to build my own computer and the motherboard had 3 PCI's, 1 AGP, and 3 ISO slots. Those PCI-E slots Emily was on about might well turn out to be the same; ignored by the masses as was the ISO slots (which were far less advanced than PCI).

I remember those ^^ I had this awesome expansion card that went into TWO ISO slots and gave me like 4 extra PCI slots to use... considering the irq restrictions that the computer I had back then had.. well.. it wasn't the most useful thing in the world really, pretty cool though. I miss the old days of computing.

I was going to mention AMR as well.
I hope I don't buy any PCI-E 1x stuff. I really don't want to cram anything in between the two 7900GS that I have. The DFI NF590 MTR/G is a good board, but they should have put the non-16x PCI-E slots somewhere else rather than between the 16x slots.

At work I have a piece of kit that runs off an ISA interface card. It's getting harder and harder to support the damn thing.
And no, you can't have my stuff

I had a nagging feeling about that. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm trying to remember what ISA stands for now. I remember years ago I saw an old ISA Sound Blaster. Huge thing it was.

I still remember the gigantic soundblaster pro cards with ram slots so that you could slap soundfont banks to the card without using system ram -------

I remember these 'vesa local bus' slots, they were HUGE and looked a lot like very, very long PCI slots. I was about 6 when I first saw them though >_<

U think pci-e x1 and AMR are useless i once had a mobo with an ARP slot ... the only thing i ever found taht would fit in it was a 56k modem lol
