Okay, I'm very new to Eve (started playing a few days ago) and trying to get my head around some things. I'll explain what I'm looking at and hopefully, someone can tell me if one approach is better than another or if I'm just hopelessly trying to micromanage.
I'm cruising around in my Rifter in the Heimatar system. I've been doing a combination of ratting and missions to try to understand the game a bit better. For the most part, I seem to be fighting only Angels which, to the best of my knowledge, seem to be weak against explosive damage.
As I sit right now, my main strategy for dealing with the Angels is to start launching Sabretooth Light Missles (from my sole launcher), which do EM damage from about 15km to drop their shields. Once I've closed to a shorter range, I'm using 3 auto turrets to fire Depleted Uranium Shells, which do a mix of explosive, kinetic, and thermal damage, to take out their armor and hull.
That strategy seems to be working pretty well. I'm wondering about a couple other options, though.
Would it be a good idea to remove one of my gun turrets and replace it with another missle launcher to fire more EM missles? I was rather thinking it was not because, against most of the rats I've been facing, one or two EM missles is enough to drop their shields completely. As armor tends to be very resistant to EM damage, once their shields are down, my EM missles do me little good.
How about if I were to use one missle launcher to fire EM missles and use a second slot to install a rocket launcher to fire Phalanx Rockets, which do explosive damage, albeit from a short range? Or perhaps go with Foxfire Rockets, which deal thermal damage, in case I need some added punch to take out the shields or just want to increase the damage I'm doing to their armor.
One other thing I've been looking at would be to change my shells from the Depleted Uranium, which does a mix of explosive, kinetic, and thermal damage to Fusion Shells, which do slightly more overall damage, but it's virtually all explosive, with just a small amount of kinetic. It seems like those would be ideal for taking out the Angels' armor quickly, but I'd become very dependent upon my missles to drop their shields quickly.
So, anyway, I'm really just wondering if I'm looking at these things properly, or not. Am I trying to micromanage far too much? Is there something I'm completely missing? Or am I analyzing this about right and just need to weigh the trade-offs and decide what I like best?
Thanks.
