So the drake description reads a bonus to heavy missiles, heavy assault missiles, and assault missiles kinetic damage. I assumed that heavy launchers fire heavy missiles, heavy assault launchers fire heavy assault missiles and assault launchers fire 'assault' missles, which I'm guessing in this context to mean standard missiles which are fired from an assault launcher.
I've got Battlecruiser 4, Standard missile specialisation 5, advanced standard missile specialisation 4, Warhead upgrades 3. Each fitted and charged assault launcher module shows 97.5 kinetic damage (regardless of using T1 or T2 precision ammo) instead of the 138.1 kinetic that my setup shows I should get on QuickFit. Also, I'm fairly certain that my damage was 97.5 even when I was on Battlecruiser 3.
So does this missile damage bonus not apply correctly? Or am I not reading it correctly? ------------------ The Phoenix Rising |

Aren't "assault missiles" what we know as rockets? That's always how I understood it - not that I'm an authority on the subject, having 500 SP in missiles and all ----------------------------------------------- New sig coming SoonÖ |

Those damage values shown when you klick on the missile (even if it is already fitted in the launcher) are kinda weird anyways.
To know how much damage the missiles really make, dock off, eject a can and shoot 1 missile on it. You will se the exact damage on the log screen.

k. so what your saying is that the 'Assault missile' bonus actually means 'rockets'?
Can someone second or clarify this?
I'll try the can test when I log on tonight. ------------------ The Phoenix Rising |

I'm pretty sure missile stats don't change to reflect your skills. Flight time, velocity, exp velocity, damage.. all stay at base. Dunno why, everything else updates :)
Kinda sucky, but i suppose cause its the ammo and not the launcher eve doesn't change it and u have to figure it out yourself :) I love my turrets.

eh?
apparently it's not applied correctly.
btw, the assault launcher is for light missiles, and not rockets. -------

The problem is the "Heavy Assault" name they've choosen for the cruiser sized rocket/torp variation, which is somewhat dumb considering the normal assault launchers. They should have called it "heavy rocket" or "light torpedo".

Assaultlaunchers fire light missiles as a higher rate of fire than standard launchers.
Do not confuse the with heavy assault launchers.
Also, all ship bonuses for weapons affect *every* weapon of that ship size, the only exception are guided missile bonuses, and iirc, only the NH has such a bonus.

on TQ right now, in the drake's description: Battlecruiser Skill Bonus: 5% shield resistance and 5% bonus kinetic damage of heavy missiles, assault missiles and heavy assault missiles
No idea what they mean there though, it is consistent with the nighthawk's bonuses however. Curiously, the Caracal and Cerberus's damage bonuses just say "kinetic missiles" - do they also get a bonus to rocket/standard/assault damage? --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

This is a good base summary of what Assault Missiles are, so I'll clarify off this post.
Rockets and Torpedoes are both unguided missiles, in between them lies the Heavy Assault Missile. This is akin to Heavy Missiles falling between Light/Standard Missiles and Cruise Missiles.
Assault Missiles Assault Missiles are their own unique type of missile. They have decent hitting power, but extremely short flight times; this causes them to be used to very short range compared to heavy missiles. Their launchers however, have a high rate of fire to compensate. EXAMPLE: Standard (T1) Heavy Assault Missiles
To use Assault Missiles, one requires the skill 'Heavy Assault Missiles'. EXAMPLE: Heavy Assault Missiles Skill
Confusion arises due to multiple factors:
1: Precision Heavy Missiles Tech2 Precision Heavy Missiles are called "Heavy Assault Missiles" on their description. This is incorrect. These require Heavy Missiles Specialization. The name is misleading as the name denotes only that they are hard-hitting and not that they have anything to do with "Heavy Assault Missiles" as previously discussed. EXAMPLE: Precision Heavy Missiles (Tech 2)
2: Heavy & Regular Assault Launchers The cruiser-sized "Assault Launcher" is a launcher designed to store and fire large amounts of Light Missiles. This again, is a misleading name and has nothing to do with Assault Missiles. EXAMPLE: Assault Launcher Fires light missiles. EXAMPLE: Heavy Assault Launcher Fires Heavy Assault Missiles
Hope that clarifies things.
EDIT: Reinstated original post, with appropriate modifications.

v. v confusing :)
essentially though I'm mildly annoyed because I thought I'd found a great Support-drake setup, as an anti-frig platform using 7x T2 Assault Launchers (light or 'standard' missiles) and a great tank, but it seems like the bonuses don't actually apply to light missiles, despite the Assault launcher being a 'cruiser-size' module.

Actually the bonus on the drake refers to all 3 missiles types. Heavies, assault and heavy assaults where I beleve assault missiles is actually a reference to light missiles in an assault launcher. Wether or not the bonus applies, I don't know, but try fitting assault launcehrs with light missiles, fire on a can and see how much damage they do. I need to try that myself later on but I'm at work atm. Sig removed. Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to know why. -Conuion Meow |

Its easier to think of it as a bonus to missiles you fire from those specific launchers, you get the bonus for hvy, hvy assault, and assault lauchers, no others.
Also to get a true number on the damage of the missiles show info on your ship and select the modules tab, then show info on the ammo.
Specialization skills dont affect damage, they allow the use of Tech II launchers and give a bonus to rof per level.

Ok just checked this out on the test server, you only get the kin damage bonus on hvy and hvy assault missiles, lights fired from std or assault missiles show no damage bonus, this was checked by fitting 2 diff damage type missiles and comparing them.
Borked description i guess?

OK to try and clear this up for everyone.
Heavy missles are just as described a missle in between light and cruise. They have good dmg decent range. Heavy assult missles are short range, slightly less powerful heavy missles, that fire at incrediablly high RoF. Standard missles are considered in-close range missles.. between 10-30km dependent on skills. they do light dmg.. Rockets are short range 1-10km and do extra light dmg. high RoF. 1 volley/3s or less.
Now on to launchers. theres standard missle launchers. fire light standard missles T1 or T2. theres heavy launchers. Fire Heavy missles T1 or T2 theres heavy assult launchers. Fire heavy assult missles, have better RoF then even assult launchers.T1 or T2 then theres Assult launchers, meant to fire high volumes of light missles as an anti-frigate weapon. all launchers above will fire defender missles.. Some people consider Heavy Assult missles to just be large rockets, same kind of range and bigger dmg.
Now on to skills.. to use standard missles one must have the standard missle skill, to fire heavy missles you need to have the heavy missle skill, and heavy assult..heavy assult skill. if you look at it heavy missle skill applies 5% dmg bonus per level to all heavy missles, as does heavy assult skill, applies 5% dmg bonus to all heavy missles. heavy and heavy assult spec, just allow the use of T2 launchers and apply a RoF bonus of -2%per lvl. All heavy missles benefit from heavy assult skill as do all heavy assult missles benefit from heavy skill.
And the drake does apply all bonuses to the missles listed.. I hope this post helped to clear things up if not well I tried.

thanks loads for the summary, although as it isn't clear still what 'assault missiles' are, whether the extra damage should be applied to standard missiles fired from Assault launchers or not is still unclear. ------------------ The Phoenix Rising |

So this is the proof I guess then. Thanks loads for doing the research.
So is the description wrong, or are the bonuses not being applied correctly? As I'm the one whose used isk and time putting together a drake setup based on assault launchers, I'm strongly suggesting that It's the bonuses that aren't being applied correctly :)

Dray, do you think you can try this out with rockets and see if they get the bonus? cos if they do then that's what 'Assault missiles' means...

Ok. just checked this on the test server in case anybody is interested.
Rockets do get a damage bonus on the drake, which i guess means that the confusing 'assault missile' bonus is indeed referring to rockets, and not standard missiles fired from an assault launcher. Bugger. ------------------ The Phoenix Rising |

A.) Nice necro
B.) Ballistic control systems DO affect HAMs. It just doesn't show up in the "show info" value, just like every other missile type. However, when fired, they will inflict the correct modified damage amount. Don't believe me? Jettison a can into space and fire a missile at it - it will inflict full modified damage. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire
