I know they aren't that good for missions, but if you had to run L4 missions in a Minmatar battleship or battlecruiser, which would it be?

Likewise, but for Sleipnir - killer for L4 missions.
L3's can be happily done in either BC, and I hear that the Maelstrom is good for L4's, although I've never tried it.

Heh. Those two ships are my goal. I'm pretty far from flying either. I bought a tempest to hold me over until then, but what do you think is the best tech 1 minmatar ship for missions?

I hear (I can't testify) that the Maelstrom's SB bonus, plus it's capless weapons, means a fierce tank. Which is good. Plus the giant alpha taking out cruisers in one volley. ---

I run a Maelstorm for level 4s - to be honest, buy a raven. The problem with the Maelstorm is its **** poor dps and its poor speed. The nice thingg is, you can fit any setup you like even with 1400s, and if yout can get the range, its nice, but art has the worst tracking ingame and it shows.

Try 1200s instead of 1400s. In most missio situations they will offer far better DPS, if you have good skills even better than a raven's. However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

I'm using a Typhoon for lvl 4's. Tank is solid as and damage is ok with the drones contributing alot - switch to heavies when only BS's and BC's are left. My skills are crap - ~5m sps - though I do have drone interfacing (ftw!). With better skills my damage will go up and I'll stop turning down Worlds Collide and Blockade. I have a couple of Capacitor Control Circuit rigs which helps power the reppers - one large named, one t2 medium - but other than that the fittings are pretty ordinary. I live in 0.0 and don't shop alot.
In the long term I think I'd like to run an 8xAC Maelstrom with some T2 gyro's and maybe a tracking computer in the lows for serious damage. With the bonus to shield boosting plus rigs the Maelstrom should have a an excellent tank. Artillery are very solid for mission running but once if I can get a strong enough combo of tank plus damage I'd like to try getting in close with AC's and see how much time can be saved.
I reckon if you really want to do well in lvl 4 missions then plan for drone interfacing 5 followed by whatever skill it is that allows you to use another drone per level in it and pwn with the drones. Doesn't matter too much what BS you choose so long as its drone bay is big enough and it has got a hard as tank. Add a drone link and you can get a control range of 60k's+ and take out all the tacklers with drones.
Cheers

AC maelstrom will cost a small fortune in ammo per mission. I tried the same with an AC tempest when i first got into BSs.
Anyways, Maelstrom is great for lvl4s. I use 120mm scouts, easy to fit and better tracking/rof. Combined with a gyro II and a rof rig, i have a 9 sec ROF. So yeah alpha strike is not that great, but it spits death from afar and has brought me home every time so far.

I do all my level 4's in a phoon with med to high level named T1 gear.
x4 torps x4 ACs
x3 Cap rechargers x1 AB
and whatever armour tank you fancy
plus 5 med and 5 heavy drones.
Works well for me.

I use a Maelstrom for lvl 4 missions as well.
High: 5x1400 Gallium, 3xArby Cruise Launcher Meds: 1xGist c-type large, 1xshield amp, 4x mission specific shield hardners Lows: 1xDamage Control II 2x PDUII, 1x Gyro II 1x Tracking II Rigs: 2xCap Recharge, 1xTurret Damage
This is good mission ship, it could use a boost to its damage but the tank on this thing will hold up to alot of dps.

Wow, I was about to post this exact question as I just started doing level 4's and I'm a Min flyer. So it seems the consensus is Maelstrom or Typhoon. Can these solo all (or most) level 4's? I did my first combat level 4 mission (The Score) in a Hurricane (BC) and it took a long time to get through it. I also took out the fleet in the last part of Gurista Strike level 3, which had about 7 bs's, but I'm assuming there are much harder missions than I've seen yet.
I'm pretty much resigning myself to the fact that I need a bs for more firepower. I've also been told some people use HAC's for level 4's. Is this an option? Do they have enough firepower, or should I go with BS?

hacs are nice for lvl 4's but they do it very slowly as well as bc's ... i hear of alot of people going in with command ships those do it well. ive been useing a cane my self untill yesterday when phoons whent on sale (nano nerf). it cost me less to buy and fit my phoon than it did my cane and its dps is better with a nice tank.i just use the basic setup for right now but im looking into arty setups or gang setups.

Tbh anyone saying that a ship using large arties had good DPS for mission does not know what good mission DPS really is. The only minnie T1 ship that really delivers decent DPS is the Typhoon. Still it doesn't hold half a candle to the Raven, the lack of a speed bonus for torps really hurts. Otoh, Sleip and to a lesser extend Claymore are fine L4 mission ships. Not the highest base DPS either (if using arties, using ACs is really not all that viable due to crap range and insane ammo need), but they more than make up for it by better tracking and sig res. Not to mention the ease of tanking. --------- There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Kestrel

Edited by: Qolde on 21/03/2007 20:14:27 I'm not enjoying this tempest. I always liked the phoon, I guess I should give it a try. With my tempest I tried:
6 Scout 800's 2 Shock Limos Siege
2 Fixed Parallel Cap Chargers 1 Parallel Target Painter 1 Orion Tracking Computer 1 Lif Afterburner
4 N-type Hardeners 1 Gyro 2 1 Large Accomodation Armor Rep
and
6 Carbine 1400s 2 Arbalest Assault Missiles
1 XL Clarity Ward SB 3 Named Shield Hardeners 1 Parallel Target Painter 1 Orion Tracking Computer
1 Gyro 2 2 Named Gyro's 1 Beta Power Diagnostic System 1 Reactor Control Unit 1 Quantum CPU
The Angels in The Blockade are giving me the business with both setups.

The phoon is a great PvE ship, but the main problem is the insane level of skillpoints you need to get the best out of it. Nothing new there I know, but still true.
Not tried it in L4's since I got my backside handed to me when I had a go some time ago. The Sleipnir gives me much less trouble, but training to fly one at all can take rather a long time.
Tbh though, I think that all the Minnie BS are capable of doing L4's, it's more about how you fit them, how you approach the missions, and your preferred style of piloting.
Let us know how you get on with it - I'd be interested to know what setup you find works.

Why don't you try using 8x1200's instead of the cruises, drop two hardeners for a tracking comp and an sensor booster/AB11/another track pooter and drop the tacking enhancer for another gyro2. Better tracking and probably more damage as well. Takes out frigs at 115km in a volley or two.
As for what Minni ships i use in missions - Typhoon for when you get warped-in right on top of a bunch of rats who aggro you right away. I fit it for speed and head toward nearest celestial object as soon as possible while taking out all the frigs and cruisers first. Then i warp back in with the Mael and rip the BS's to shreds.
The Maelstrom has got awesome tanking and good range with arties and the right type of ammo. I tend to preffer an arti setup because if you get into range and keep them in falloff you can just snipe 'em one by one. Most times you hardly need the sheild booster. I finished The Blokade the other night (pre patch) by sniping from range and only used the sheild booster once!
Try the Mael because if you set it up right and do a little recon in a shuttle first, you can own most level 4's. And AC setups absolutely melt BS's if you use rat specific ammo.

I use a typhoon in all my L4 missions.
I fly solo and havent had any major issues with most hte L4s.
I skip Angel Extravagance because it takes too long. same with Worlds Collide.
Havent tried Vengeance yet..I had a bad experience with Vengeance when I first moved to BS's and so just auto skip it.
So the phoon will do you well. But like has been said. you need drone, missile and gun skills..
although to be honest..you dont use the cannons all that much. most time your missiles and drones do most the damage.
