I, am not a miner, nor, do I have intrests in ever becoming one, however, I did read this thread, mainly from the poster, vivus mors...
The idea of having a "mining can"
It appeared to be "somewhat" a good idea, mainly due to, only allowing one can per person, it was reasonable, not to allow it to increase an indys cargohold, as we already had GSCs for that.
However, "One per person"
--What would prevent someone, from, making an alt, and, setting another up? --What would prevent someone, from, making a trial account, and setting one up? Maybe have the skill require to put them down (Assuming its not going to require "Anchoring")
Now, on the topic of your "compression" Idea.
A hulk has a cargohold, base, of 8,000M3 From the sounds of it, your looking at trying to get an exhumer, in one way, or another, to be able to hold 15,000-25,000 M3 [Your cans, and your mining hold, both show this]
So, that would mean you want about, a 2-1 or 2.5-1 compression ratio, giving a hulk, about 16,000M3 - 20,000 M3
What about cargohold expanders? And rigs? Look at what it *could* do.
Starting off with a base cargohold of 8,000
Two cargohold expanders II of 27.5% each:
13,500 M3
Now, say, two rigs, of, 15% each.
17,199M3
--So, you want to "compress" ore, even just saying a 2-1 ratio, thats giving a hulk the possability to have 35,000 M3 of ore...
I would say, thats too much, even if it is a high rank skill, and giving 20% per skill level, at 80% its still going to be above 30,000M3 - Thats, NOT, a solution, thats going to allow miners to go afk for? 20-30 minutes before having to deal with the ore in their cargoholds?
What about a "Mining Cargohold" you say?
Here is the problems I see with that
1) Will make barges have too much of a cargohold overall, just look at the hulk comparisons up there, even without "compression" It will allow a hulk to have 16,000M3 base of a cargohold? I mean, if you start adding much more to that, your going to run into problems with having a barge with too much space for ore.
2) You claim you only want it for barge vessels? What about the new miners? Little osprey? New miners can't use a barge for a while, so, they take advantage of somthing that mines slower, but, still enough to produce a profit? But, how do they do this? Jetcan mining. They have too small of cargoholds to hold much ore, but, they mine a cargohold -+ every 60 seconds or so, without jetcans, you kill a new miners profits, now, this may work for "mining cans" But, then it would allow new miners WAY to much profit. Why? Well, ore theifs help control the newbie miner population by putting in risk of loss, if this risk wasn't there, we would see more problems, in my opinion.
Vivus, you may have good ideas overall, however, I see some problems with your ideas. However - Your asteriod scanner idea would be a good addition, however, a "Broad" scanner, would also be nessacary, to scan the entire belt at once, to get ore ammounts, rather then having to lock onto an asteriod, to scan it [Think the scanner we already have] However, your "Narrow" (For lack of better word) Scanner, I can't see any problems with it. Along with the timers for cycle times, very useful indeed.
