So I occasionally come across references to point defense in Eve. Be it either in the Canon and stories, or in ship descriptions. (For example http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/ships/dreadnoughts/gallente/19724.asp .) My question is... What the heck are the Point Defense Systems? Is their a module you need to buy? Is it an automated defensive system built into certain ships? Is it just 'fluff'? Any idea's?

er... it's not an actual item or anything, no. It's just a term that gets used in actual combat a lot, like alpha strike or pvp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_defense

So you're basically saying it's fluff. I find it odd that they would say something like... "Of all the dreadnoughts currently in existence, the versatile Moros possesses perhaps the greatest capacity to fend off smaller hostiles by itself while concentrating on its primary capital target. By virtue of its protean array of point defense capabilities" Which means it basically has 'the greatest capacity' because it has a cool description. :p

Edited by: Bronson Hughes on 21/03/2007 19:05:09 The term "Point Defense" could be considered to be a ship's ability to deal with small and/or fast-moving targets at short ranges. Drones and smartbombs are probably the best "point defense" systems. Stasis webs could be considered "point defense" as well in that they allow your heavier weapons to perform better against such targets. Light missiles and light guns would also work, but they would take the space of a heavier weapon on larger ships.
EDIT: To further answer your question, no there are no 'point defense' modules or systems. Since the Moros has a huge bonus to drone damage and hitpoints, it could be considered a superior point defense ship.

There was an idea a while ago to have a sort of 'weapon mount' module for BS and capitals that would essentially allow you to fit 2, 3 or 4 smaller guns on one high slot, with the grid requirements of all the individual guns (perhaps a drop in CPU as they are linked)and would only be allowed T1 guns and ammo (to stop people fitting 'throns with mwd's and 28 x Heavy Neutrons IIs). But they would allow ships to fit exactly that: point defense weaponry, like Phalanx guns on real-world ships.
E.g:
Megathron (hislots only)
5 x Ion Blaster Cannon II 1 x Multiple Weapon Mount I with: 3 x Dual 150mm Railgun I with Iridium. (vs Orbiting cruisers & slow frigs) 1 x Multiple Weapon Mount I with: 4 x Light Neutron Blaster I with Antimatter. (vs close orbiting stuff & drones)
It wouldn't be overpowered as the combined guns would mean a major strain on CPU, and T1 ammo has alot of limits.
I should start a new thread with this. ---

it must be giving a fancy name to the dreadnoughts drone bay then. It has 4 high slots so it doesn't really leave room for 'mounted' defenses for short range D.

Point Defense system refers to specialized defense systems used to protect vessels from incoming fire/missles. This would be say a Phalanx Missle system found on modern day naval warships. In EvE terms the only system of this type would be the nearly useless Defender Missles.

The term 'point defence' could also be used to describe destroyers or interceptors or other short range ships sitting with sniper battleships for example, to defend against tacklers rather than engaging in the main fight. The term basically means something which defends a single 'point', rather than an area.

I'm surprised no one else has said this yet.
A ship with good point defence capabilitys is able to defend a set point well (keeping hostile ships away whilst staying alive and sitting in the same point)
