Just thought id start another thread on the topic of making expensive mistakes, seeing that ive just done one.
This morning about 40 mins ago i logged into my new character to set a skill running, and decided to buy and train gallente cruiser. So i go to market, right click gallente cruiser and then try to train it. Unfortuneatly due to being half asleep i was unaware that i had just bought the gallente carrier skill book for 450mil and was surprised that i couldnt train it. So in about 5 seconds i had lost 450mil from making a simple mistake, although ive put the skill book back in market for 400mil and hopefully in the next 3 months someone will buy it.
So who can beat that? Im sure that isnt the most expensive mistake done in eve (i know about what the ASCN leader did with the Titan :p )

Edited by: Peturabo on 22/03/2007 10:24:31 To be honest im not that bothered about the 50 mil, the whole point for putting it in at a lower price to the other skill books in the region, is that it will have a higher chance of being bought, which it did :p
It's the 400mil im bothered about :p

My biggest unexpected loss came when someone stole and popped my Domi. Total loss 110M. I watched it happen on the scanner.
When someone entered local I warped back to the appropriate safespot to grab it and let them find the lesser value ships I had scattered around the system instead, and found that my Domi was actually almost exactly 1M or 1B (some round number) of kilometers away, in a direction where there were no celestial bodies (thus it was impossible for me to get to that point myself).
Since I had just logged in, I can only assume that it never warped back to the safespot from the e-warp area, and I didn't notice. I didn't check that it was actually at the safespot, ejected and warped off, and that was it.
I learned to always verify the location of my ships before leaving them somewhere. -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

Was flying to empire through a chokepoint to fit a new Force Recon. On the way down, the system is camped by lots of blue friendlies (around 10ish), i wave and jump through.
Fit the Recon complete with the Covert ops cloak. Bought another one for the covert ops frigate, several faction webbers, couple BPOs... in short completely loaded cargo hold
Flying back through the same system, not bothered with scouts cause i can just cloak and warp away. Jump in, see the same bunch of blues on the gate, and 1 single flashing red hostile guy.
So, in the brief moment of greed, i think "hey, i will get myself a cheap shot on the guy getting an extra killmail". Uncloak, damped him, and wait for his shield/armor to go down as the rest of the friendlies are shooting him.... Wait... the rest of the friendlies are not shooting him.... wait... they aren't "friendlies", they are wrecks of friendlies after they were all killed! At this point, the rest of the hostile gang warps and blows me up... most of my expensive cargo surviving for them
It was late and i mistook wrecks of friendlies for friendly ships ... 300mill to learn to pay attention

New corp mate moving to 0.0 asks me to haul some things out in my carrier for him. I say no prob give me a bit to get fuel moved. he says screw it and puts his whole eve life into a bustard and goes out into delve. Now when i say whole life... i mean like 3-4 bpo's including his ecm - burst II bpo.
He lags and crashes on the way out. hostiles probe him and kill him and they get his bpo. He petitions ccp says oh yeah there was a problem here's your ship back but you're responsible for the can contents....

Official Version: "To strike a blow against the economy of our enemies, the Martyr Princess Jodi attempted to detonate a Suicide Freighter on the Taisy gate. The Freighter 'El Whoppo' was packed full of Oxygen Isotopes and Enriched Uranium, intended to make a huge radioactive blast that would cripple the Taisy stargate forever. Unfortunately, the batteries on the detonation device failed, as they were taken from Princess Jodi's over-used vibrator."
What Really Happened: I was auto-piloting through empire and chatting on Vent, when a discussion about a system I had scanned came up. Since I couldn't remember the name, I set destination to our 0.0 home so I could find the star system nearby. Then I kinda forgot to reset the destination. About 4 billion isk went boom very fast when I jumped into a gate camp.

As a noob I bought a million isk worth of t2 light missiles, not realizing I had to train a bunch before I could use them. They're still sitting in my hanger and I still don't have the skills. :)
An almost mistake was selling one of the nexus chips for 10 million isk. From what I could gather online, it was a fair market value for it but it was something I might have wanted to keep for when I was ready to build the ship it was for.
As for the rest of you guys, I am in awe of your losses. I hope I never to you.

This isn't an expensive mistake for anybody who's been playing very long, but for a six-day noob like me, it was...
I took a player courier contract to haul a small package on a 25-system jump route. Half the jump was through 0.3 or 0.4 space. OK, so here I am, a newbie, in my Gallente destroyer with four rail^H^H^H^Hpopguns and two mining lasers, none of those gizmos that prevent you from getting de-warped or whatever it is, basically a ship that I use for killing pirates, running missions, and mining. So I stupidly decide, well, OBVIOUSLY I'm a noob, in a destroyer, and therefore not even worth the ammo it takes to blow me to hell, right? No real pirate is gonna pick on me. It'd be like stomping a hamster with a jackboot. I'm not worth the trouble, so I'm going to just cruise on through a crapton of low-sec systems without even knowing that you can check the map to see where people have been killed recently.
I think you guys can see where this one's going, right?
Three low-sec systems into my little odyssey, I pop out at a gate, and literally before I can find the next gate in my overview and right-click it, I'm dead. Then whoever it was blows away my pod (I didn't save the mail from CONCORD). I'm back on Cistuvaert, with my insurance in the bank.
By the time I replaced the ship and fittings, ate the loss of 400,000 ISK collateral, and wrote a letter of apology to whoever I'd contracted with, I was out a million ISK out of the 5 million I had. And that's with platinum insurance.
I'm sticking to 0.5 space for now, kthx.

Had a market order to buy something silly (I think some datacores) for 4mil each, 20 of em.
Was going through my market orders (I'm no market *****, maybe something like 3 or 4 orders outstanding at that time), phone rings, I get busy chatting and adjusting my orders, some tard outbid me by .01, so I click to modify the order to outbid my rival by a full 1 ISK!
Well order adjusted, I concentrate on discussing the importance of beer and pie, hover with the mouse over my wallet and get a heart attack. I had adjusted the order to read 400mil per item instead of 4 mil.
So I purchased datacores worth 80mil for 8 billion that day. Needless to say, I put the phone down these days when playing with my market orders!

I made this huge mistake very early in the game, like 3 or 4 days after it launched after playing beta I thought, hey maybe CCP had made use of agents or would within the vicinity of 2 months.
You're gonna love this
I created a character with maxxed out charisma, played more than healthy with such character dooing extremely poor rewarding agents, then after a long long long time agents were still total flop but my character was flying around in battleships and I wouldn't be arsed to create another main, so I've been stuck in a gorgeous body, with no brain, no willpower and certanly reflexes that would only allow me to walk out of a turtle's way.
However I demand the choice of bigger boobs than any other for my full sized avatar

Well my mistake wasn't as expensive as yours but for me it was quite nasty.
I was doing lvl 3 Blockade mission in my NOS / Drone Myrmidon (my first BC, used every penny I had on it) and had to jump out because of really bad aggroing. I recharge shields, cap, etc and jump back in. The thing is...I jumped to 0m and was alt-tabbed doing something else while I started my jump. I tabbed back to EvE seeing what's going on, I notice that I'm lagging like hell and all my shields and half my armor is already gone (no hardeners or repairers active), I promtly *try* to active all those but due to the lag they finally activate when hull is at 50%. I allign and just when I'm about to start my warp there's another huge lag and when the lag is gone...so was my ship. Took me some time to get the money to buy a decent ship again:p
