To replace smartbombs (or atleast partially).
Point defense guns takes up high slots. Comes in bulks (per slot). Have an insane rate of fire (like the phalanx system) and targets and shoots at as much as it can (withing its very limited range). Missiles, Drones and other ships. Could have a great graphical effect (like something from old IWO JIMA footage) with lots of tracers hunting those fighters.
Could be mass fitted on smaller ships (destroyers?) for use as pickets (to run along the flanks of the fleet and saturate incomming missile attacks).
Personally I think smartbombs are kinda lame (and the can be used to sploit game mechanics aswell) and they don't look as nice as these would =)

This isn't a bad idea at all, and with a bit of working could be very nice, but a question I have about it would be, what would stop this from being used for camping the exit points on stations? Unless it has the same drawback as smartbombs have now, where it will hit everything within it's range. If you could expand on this idea more it could be a very strong addition to the file, but for right now it just sounds like a variation on the smartbomb with a new animation.

The major difference between point defense mounts and smartbombs would be that point defense gun systems could be overloaded with targets. Where a smartbomb will hit anyting within range and do it's damage over an area (including all drones, missiles and ships, no matter how many there are) the PDM can only target one target per module. The PDM can be overwhealmed with targets to shoot at (allowing some missiles and/or drones to pass through). The PDM would also have a smaller damage output that their smartbomb brethren, and instead have a very high rate of fire and a slightly better range (allowing picket point defense ships like destroyers to protect their bigger brothers in the fleet from fighters and missiles as the latter pass through the outer perimiter of a fleet).

The main advantage of the pdm is to hurt only hostiles and not allies, stargates, concord, sentry guns, neutral people in empire... It would be some short range gunnery defense that would actually be usable in empire too (not like smartbomb).
For the activation, it should work like defender missiles and drones : Shooting at incoming missiles and Shooting at people (or people's drones) aggressing you (automatic defense like when you have your drones already out), or your actual target if you attack one (or activate module to attack the target).
Maybe there should be different types of this module for each ship class, like there are for smartbombs, the bigger modules would have only higher rof. Having a destroyer with 8 of the frigate class of this module would already hurt a lot.
This needs balancing, else it will become painful (more than attacking a ship with smartbombs) using drones or missiles, tackling and other short ranged activities... -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron... |

It's great to have some constructive critisism =) I thought about the part with the guns only shooting at agressors. Some of the point with the PDM would be lost (or so I belive) since it wouldn't fire on anything thats targeting someone else than the PDM fitted ship (thus making it useless as a support ship for fleets).
Different sizes of PDMs is a big can of worms (as it would provide battleships and other large vessels a "drone/fighter nerf option". While smaller modules would do best on small ships (since the big guys will get a better effect just mounting large guns instead, dps wise). Good points though, I'm not so sure anymore =)

PDMs would still fire upon rats and any "hostile" targets though. Maybe even neutrals and friendlies (if the get too close). The point of having a larger range for PDMs is purely for the benefit of being able to defend your friends. Keeping it a small size module with moderate damage (less than smartbombs) but high rate of fire (giving a sustained DPS, good against fighters and drones and passing missiles) will make ships like the destroyer and cruiser a good support option in fleet and carrier warfare.

The idea is good in general but has some flaw I'd like to point out:
If you have the DPS/alpha to bring down a fighter drone relatively fast your will kill a player frigate in half - 1/3 the time. Mounting such a module on anything smaller than a capital wouldnt be fair to frigate pilots.
If you have the DPS/alpha to bring down a fighter (18mil) relatively fast and be able to fit it on a Battleship (60-130mil hull-price) it would only be fair to give carriers (0.9-1.25bil hull-price) & dreads (2bil hull-price) (yeah make dreads usefull for fleet battles ^^) point defense that can down a Battleship AS FAST!
An ideal solution would have them come in 5 different sizes: frig, cruiser, battleship, capital, supercapital (WOOT! Titan PD poping carriers left, right and zenter?!?).
Frigate Point defense would be ideally suited to kill small drones and all sorts of missiles but cruiser&torps and be moderately usefull vs other frigs & medium drones while the normal frig weapons would do more dmg vs those.
cruiser PD would be ideally to ward off all sorts of drones but fighters as well as torps and cruisemissiles. It would be efficient against frigs. At same time it would have problems tracking smaller missile types but lack the damage to bring down citadell torpedoes, fighters and other cruisers.
battleship PD would be specialized in killing off all sorts of frigs and cruisers as well as heavy drones, torpedoes and citadells. It would have problems tracking small and medium drones but would be devastating vs heavy drones and usefull vs fighter drones.
capital PD would be only usefull against fighter drones, citadell torpedoes and BC. Cruisers would have a moderate chance to be missed and BS should be able to withstand the pummel for some time (about as long as a FIghter drone survives BS PD).
supercapital PD would have a sole purpose: wreck havock among BS. BC and fighters would still be in danger but have a good chance of evading. It would also be fairly OK against capitals.
I'd love to see those point defenses dont require missile/turret slots so you can mounth them on those "useless" utility slots (just like smartbombs).

The PDM was never intended to waste a fighter-drone in a short amount of time. The continous ROF and crazy tracking would however allow it to put constant dps on the target (so given time it would down a fighter). The range of the PDM would be greater than a smartbomb, but still not great enough to compete with ordinary turrets in range or dps (just the insane tracking and ROF). The PDM should't be better than the smartbomb to kill multiple medium sized targets(wich can be used to kill frigates aswell mind you)but it would be a nice complement to smaller ship types (and enable these to fill a more important role in larger engagements). It doesn't even need to fire on anything larger than missiles, drones and fighters (wich excludes it as a weapon to be used in direct combat with another ship).

Smartbombs needs much cap to fire, maybe the PDM with its insane ROF could need much ammo when firing. I thought about using ammunition 1 size smaller than the ship size, but we don't have XS ammunition for frigates, or just the PDM would not be intended for anything under cruiser or destroyer (may mount 1 eating a large part of pwg)? Isn't ammunition the real pain with high velocity guns?

nah. I tihnk it should fire on smaller ships too.
maybe only on smaller types (so you need a bs PD vs frigs a capital PD vs cruisers and a Supercpaital PD vs bs)?
