I started as an industrial player but the more I PVP, the more I love it!
Having said that, I really don't buy all the arguments slamming mission running and PVE.
Argument 1: Eve is a PVP game because CCP says so.
If you had to categorize eve I'd agree that it would best be described as a PVP game, but it's original and unique enough that neither PVP nor PVE describes it well and CCP's marketers had to call it something. If it were meant to be PVP in the strictest sense there wouldn't be such a large, safe are right in the middle of the map, nor would the tutorial show you how to be a miner, scientist, manufacturer or trader. The game is brilliant because it can accommodate so many different styles of play. I may not ever want to be a trader, but the game is far richer (and more realistic) because I can if I like.
Argument 2: Mission running screws up the game economics
Not buying this one, either. Eve's economy and politics are arguably the most realistic of any game, being almost entirely player driven. In real life there can be no armies nor navies without what? You guessed it, farmers! If CCP ever does drive the PVE'ers away (and they seem far to smart to actually do that), guess who will be doing not just more, but all the grinding. The only alternative at that point would be to end the notion of a truly player driven economy, which would be quite a shame.
As to the risk vs. reward/ fair vs. unfair thing: even if there are a few mission runners who manage to totally avoid PVP and thus don't directly contribute to your wallet, rest assured that as long as they are buying and selling you are ultimately getting their isk. Furthermore, in a real economy risk is not the only thing that drives up wages. Wages also depend on expertise or even (check out the pay scale for sanitation workers) unpleasantness. If missioning were really a combination of lowest risk, best money and most fun there would be a lot more of it than there is.
Argument 3: I don't understand how you can enjoy PVE in Eve
Yeah, you're right. I'm sure most people can enjoy what they enjoy whether or not you understand so this should present no problem. (Sorry about the blunt tone on this one, but the whole "why don't you think like me" thing is the one part of the debate that moderately annoys me.)
I honestly think that a big part of the reason that Eve is such a great game is it's variety and depth. It has unmatched political and economic realism precisely because of the way it has balanced different play styles and career choices. It has already proven with amazing success that PVP and PVE can be balanced. Not sure if you can balance anything without annoying both ends at least a little :)
