In Glasgow, the midnight opening wasnt that busy, with most people (around 30 at the St Enoch centre) arriving around 23:30. Their opening times were midnight to 01:30, so cant comment if others came later on.
So, first impressions of the PS3, even after all the naysayers and doubters are very positive. It is a very slick machine, the menu system is very nice and connecting via wi-fi was an absolute doddle. Its big, heavy and shiny, oh so very shiny, in fact its a fingerprint magnet..
The playstation store is quite cheap, tekken 5:dr is about 7 quid, gripshift was just under 4 quid. Gran Turismo HD concept (a bit of fluff knocked up by polyphony to have a gander at GT in HD and supposedly not indicitative of GT5) is very nice to play.
Of all the launch games i got resistance (medium/good, online its quite fun but no warfighter 2 co-op), motorstorm (wow, loads of fun and darn sexy to look out), F1 (love these games and can only get on PS :( ) just feels spot on, and finally virtua fighter 5 (slick and nice to look at, the sim of fighting games).
So, ive had it a day, and ive got a wii and 360 to gauge it against, and its a most welcome machine to the party. This isnt a brag of 'oh ive got all 3' it just means i hope that im being unbiased and have lots of choice in the future. For me the PS3 is a damn fine machine, and im very happy i got one.
Ok, now onto the niggles, removing the emotion engine for running ps2 games hurts, maybe a bit more than the xbox games that didnt work on the 360, only 1 of the 5 games doesnt run, damn it! i wanted rez to run and gradius 5 still, at least r-type final does without issue.
Took me ages to work out you cant change the background colour of the menu bar, then i realised it changes colour with the passing of the day... doh! heh heh heh. Other gripe is the caching of data onto the hard drive when you just want to play the bloody game, software updates require you to manually restart the game, unlike the 360 autostart after an update. The controller is a bit lightweight, but, is very sensitive the new R/L2 triggers are excellent and the dual sticks are very accurate, and surprisingly (a sentiment echoed by a mate of mine) you dont really miss the rumble function..go figure.
Damn bit of an essay, apologies to anyone who fell asleep while trying to read.
Ps3 gets a big thumbs up here, and i can happily report there have been no fights breaking out between the 360 and PS3 with the wii egging them on in the background. They've all been told the leccy will be withdrawn if any shenanigans occur.
