Some of them need batteries to run crystals of rarer ore effectively. They need to upgrade cap max. They also need a survey scanner. A second midslot would help alleviate this.
Don't kid yourselves. Even the dirtiest pirates from the birth of EVE have been carebears. They use alts to bring them goods at cheap prices and safely, rather than live with consequences of their in game actions on their main, from concord to prices

I feel like the Mining Barges need more rework then that sense they all have the same number of high slots now. But it is a good start. |

These are shield tanking ships with just 1 mid.
That alone should sound alarm bells. |

Only the Retriever. The Procurer and Covetor are cap-stable with Mercoxit crystals and a yield-fit, and a Survery Scanner.
With good skills, you can make the Retriever cap-stable by putting on a single T2 Memory Cell rig. You even have enough space for a Mercoxit Rig and lows full of MLU IIs.
You just need to learn to fit your ships better. |

Cap stable isn't the only metric. You should also consider half-stops during cycle to hit another roid for higher efficiency.

My Retriever is cap stable - in theory. T2 yield-fit for hi/low-sec ore, with crystals and adaptive invulnerability field. The cap indeed recharges faster than it depletes, the problem is that the 2 turrets consume so much, they instantly use up all cap if I turn them on simultaneously, even with maxed cap skills. I think it could use a slightly bigger cap. It's annoying to wait a half cycle to turn the second laser on.
If you want an intelligent argument, please do, I'm up for it!
But if you want a trolling contest, I will win it by simply not participating.

The cap indeed recharges faster than it depletes, the problem is that the 2 turrets consume so much, they instantly use up all cap if I turn them on simultaneously, I think capacitor management 5 wouldn't be able solve this either (I'm on 4 at the moment). I think it could use a slightly bigger cap. It's annoying to wait a half cycle to turn the second laser on.
I don't think it's reasonable to request CCP rebalance and mining ship for better cap stability if the above is true. Staggering the operation of T2 mining lasers seems like a reasonable thing to do - especially if (as you infer) training the requisite support skills to 5 removes the issue. I mean that's kind of the point of character improvement in all games - until you put in the effort (or in Eve's case it's just subscription time or injector isk) to become the best - you make a few sacrifices.
In the light of the big picture - the annoyance of staggering your mining modules until you become a mining expert isn't really that big of a deal. This is not the only place where training cap skills to 5 makes the game better. (try being a newbro in amarr ships - cap is life) |

Half stops for higher efficiency seem to come at a cost (in cap). I'm not seeing a problem with the trade off. |

That cost would be fine if you could sacrifice a midslot for cap rather than tank.

If cap is an issue you can rig it or use cap relays in the lows. Tank wise, they can hull tank quite well and it frees up the mid for a scanner.
But yeah, I'd like an extra mid to make a shield tank viable. Especially with the coming orca changes and porpoise.

These ships are basically a mess. 2 of them struggle to actually use their fitting slots and with the latest changes get a little less thank than before, 2 of them can fit no tank to speak of due to an utter lack of fitting options and 2 of them get a crazy high base HP to the point where one of them is roughly the same as a scorpion battleships base tank.
They are horribly balanced against each other let alone vs the rest of the ship lineup. |
