You see XP has very poor multi CPU handling and this is one area where Vista is much improved - don't believe me ? Talk to AMD about how their 4x4 platform is getting slammed because XP cripples its performance......
Also at some point a new game will arrive and blow your eyes out of their sockets - you'll want it so bad you'll spunk all that money on a new GPU to play it while downloading a torrent of vista - yes you will..... I reckon it might be Crysis that makes grown men weep with it's beauty, shortly followed by the DX10 Eve client....
At the end of the day guys, sitting and moaning about how a new OS is a memory pig and is rubbish seems a little silly when you all run XP - Windows 3.1 uses hardly any resources at all but unfortunately it doesn't have DirectX, mp3 support, DVD playback, USB, firewire yaddda yadda
So at some point you'll upgrade anyway........
We all know that CCP will not shoot themselves in the foot and loose half the playerbase by forcing DX10 too early but belive me when I say that the writing is on the wall for DX9 and XP, and in this world of fast changing technology CCP would be foolish to not push the envelope.
I'd love to see Eve running on every device it could - it's a fantastic game - but CCP have to spend their time developing for the biggest platform to capture the largest playerbase. Just like virus writers. People tend to forget just how many Windows PC's their are in the world and how comparitively few linux and apple machines there are.......
I know I'm going to get flamed as an MS fanboi but seriously its very very easy to flame MS because people struggle with their PC's - but you have to remember there are people in the world who struggle to tie their laces....
P.S - No DirectX10 for XP at all ever seriousy - MS already said it SP3 will be the last pack for XP - it'd dead already
Linux directx support via wine and cedega gets better and better, even big companys like blizzard nowadays pay attention to players on linux and acknowledge it. Why would i buy/pirate vista and all that drm crap, not to mention supporting a company like microsoft, when i can just make some nice people happy who spend their free time developing an alternative OS?
And whatever cpu is lost by that wine translation, it cant be worse than the resources vista hogs just for itself. Seriously i see completly no reason to buy vista at all. I have XP, and linux WILL be able to run DX10 games even if XP doesnt.
Besides ccp already announced a linux and mac client, maybe that escaped you. So the point is, i will never upgrade to vista. I dont need outlook XXXIII or internet explorer 98742 cause im using firefox and thunderbird anyway, i also dont need the new office that probably also gets restricted to vista at some point cause i use openoffice. And im sure that new game that blows my socks off will be supported by other OS, cause you know, directx 10 isnt exactly rocket science if compared to directx 9.
