I don't usually jump in with responses to threads like these, but there are times when I just cannot sit idly by and watch people make a fool of themselves.
This is one of those times.
I own an Xbox, not a PS3. I was overjoyed to hear that the PS3 was going to be the home of Dust514. Not for the expense; it'll put me that little bit further away from buying a new motorbike. But because, it must be said, the PS3 is a more capable console. Sure, it's got some power supply issues on the older versions, and some of the newer versions overheat a mite, but the X360 is just the same. Some are clunky some way, some another.
It happens. The PS3 has a lot more processing and graphics power under the hood, plus a more slick and appealing UI. I think the PS3 is a better console, I've just been waiting for a good enough reason to buy it.
To those of you who have been bitching that Dust was going to be Xbox exclusive: Please, lurk some more before posting. All it takes is a little research to find out that, apparently, the switch was a result of Microsoft denying CCP access to their network infrastructure to test the principles of Dust.
That, and the Microsoft and therefore Xbox infrastructure, console architecture, network capabilities and, let's be honest, publishing brainpower (is that an oxymoron? Who knows) was never created with the intention of handling 64+ player games. The PS3 and PSN were.
Then consider the engine the game's created in: UE3. Here's another interesting point for you all to consider. The UE3 came out years ago, literally, and still produces some beautiful games. How? Experience, skill, and some beautiful coding. The engine allows for incredible scalability - a core tenet of CCP's production process, I'd like to point out - that allows developers who use the engine to make beautiful games at relatively low computation cost. This is what will let CCP run 64player matches without melting PS3s left right and centre. The Xbox has neither the processing power, even with the scalability of UE3, to handle such large matches, nor the architecture to fully utilise the UE3.
The X360 has to use UE3 in DX9 mode, which is just clunky. The PS3 on the other hand can use UE3 in OGL, and while I admit that OGL has it's issues, just like DX, it suits the direction that CCP seem to be going with Dust a lot more.
Now, where there any more inane comments people would like to make? If anyone has anything useful to add, interject or contradict, please do. However, if you want to attempt to achieve truth by repetition on the grounds of "you're wrong" or "I heard that...", please don't waste my time and yours. You have no more facts than I do, I'm just better at drawing useful conclusions and intelligent conjecture than you are.
tl;dr: The PS3 has been chosen for Dust because it is better for Dust.
another tl;dr: I dislike people who appear to be deliberately stupid. |
