As characters have implants as permanent modification ('till they "die"), ships could have such a kind of tuning. This "implants" (i mean "adds") could, for example, add a high/med/low slots (drawback could be "less hull" or "less armor" or "less whatever you want").
Applying such an add-on to your ship results in a "immobilisation" of it in your hangar for a certain amount of time (less than a day for a frigate, many many day for a BS). Categorisation of this add-ons should be done as for afterburner and MWDs (i mean : "this add-on can only be fitted on a frigate and this one on a battleship"). We can also be MORE restrictive (e.g. "the add-on can only be fitted on Caldari Cruisers").
Of course, skills (expansive ones ;p) should be required to allow such an addition. __________

Nice idea, Darsk'hul. Had a similar thought - see my post about Q-ships.

There has been lots of discussion previously about modding ships and/or BP's.

I think that modding BP is not a good idea (but it's just a personnal though) : Tech 2-5 BP ARE modded BPs already.
Here, it's permanent modification of a ship, which can give it a great value on the market as it can be "unique" or "non-standard". __________

I always thought this is a good idea, and figured it would be in as a manufactureres make brands differentl sort of thing. It will probably be included with or shortly after we get Manufacterer tagging for items.
however, personal modifications would be nice. One idea I thought would be almost an "underlay" of slots, with the ability to put in mods tweaking the ship. Or, it could work like implants, probably the "best" way. Another could be almost purely statistical, almost an "overclocking" of the ship, decrease some stats, increase others, etc., basically be able to modify the ships statistics wiithin relative bounds to your liking. Would give ships a more personal feel.

Techincally, there are no tech levels to ships. There will never be a Tempest II or Scorpion II. They are completely different ship models. And modding bp's is slated for Shiva if my memory serves me. And this does serve a great purpose. "I'm comin' for ya, and Hell's comin' with me!" |

Great idea. Would be so cool if this would also make a visual difference to the ships.

Yes either that or customizing ships could be done upon the crafting of the ship. This would add more for the crafters to do and getting a non-standard ship would be like a custom order.
