Not sure how this would work, but it sure would be cool to look at a killmail and have the option to watch the kill like you were actually there. I would be willing to actually pay a plex to watch that guy lose his Vargur. I guess you would have to add video to every killmail of the fight. Camera options on the ship that got destroyed, ect.
Who here would like to watch other peoples killmails? |

I'd be interested in watching a few probably, but paying a PLEX is stupid. I support this idea because it would be a sweet training tool for new and older players alike. I also don;t think it will happen for years if ever, and rightly so since there are 8 million better things for CCP to focus on than instant replays.

Yeah, I guess a plex is kinda steep unless it came with an option to make a youtube video out of it. |

Exactly my thoughts, too much info to hold on too, also you can already record the video yourself and post it up, many players doo do this. |

Maybe, but it might be nice to have an ingame version for the less techy players. |

Based on past experience, here's how this will work.
1. CCP makes an in game fight recorder. 2. CCP doesn't update it for four years. 3. CCP cuts the fight recorder out of the game so they can streamline and focus resources on game development (just like the jukebox and the in game broswer). 4. Players ***** and moan about losing functionality CCP really wasn't in a position to support in the first place. 5. Players adapt and find out of game options to do the same thing which work better.
Let's just skip straight to step 5 and save ourselves some time and frustration.

The amount of data transferred between the server and the client is minimal, it's just a few numbers. The beauty of EvE comes into reality through the client's rendering. It should'nt be a big problem to record the data stream and create an offline replay functionality.

I guess Killmails will have to be converted into Killstreams. Then we would need a website called zKillstreams where we could go and watch the killmail rather than look at it. I think this would add replay to the game.. |

A long time ago I used to play Gran Turismo 3 with my brother and I had to figure out how replays worked on that and basically it didn't actually make a movie, but it recreated the race with the recorded inputs.
I used to test this and find bugs in it. I promise I'm fun at parties

Consider doing that for every ship, because you don't know which ship is about to explode, so you have to record them all.
If you want to move it client-side, ya, that might be feasible. But you'd only get to see the battles that were made available, rather than any random killmail. |

Well, it's basically a replay feature. Lineage II used to have that years ago, and I do not see why Eve wouldn't be able to pull it off.
Let's think for a bit what would be required for that: We need information about who is on grid, flying what, fitted with what. We need to know where everyone is, which direction he's going, how fast, how many HP he has and which modules are active, and we need that info for every server tick. There are no physics-, skillpoint-, hit- or damage calculations required for the replay, since hitpoints and ship death are recorded for every server tick, so replaying it shouldn't be too taxing for the client.
Now, if we assume that CCP were to record and save that on their servers for every fight on the server ever, that could turn into a problem. But if it was just a player client saving whatever it is seeing anyway every second on a local disk, that sounds much more doable, as basically this isn't much more than a combat log file, and we can save those, right? The volume of data required would be far less than for a full HD video recording. Lineage II did that, and it it worked well.
We could then load this file into the client, maybe even from the launcher without having to log in, and let the game render the graphics for it as if it was just getting this information from the server, speed it up, slow it down - it would be marvellous for making videos and analysing fights.
I'm all for a replay feature.

Still this would create a lot of additional intel, as you could place camera ships at hotspots.

Camera ships? I think just use the ship that explodes in a "Look at" ship that's already in the game. Still need to pan out away from the ship and look around though. |

Cameras recording a battle is one thing but Killmails themselves should be removed from the game.

Just the ability to log the grid data locally and rebuild your own replays (or post the data for others) shouldnt be *too* difficult. And yes, would be sweet.
but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

Who here would like to watch other peoples killmails? Can already do this and its free - its called imagination, which is as likely to be as accurate as a system that takes an existing killmail and recreates the fight.
Of course if you mean assigning a killmail a unique tag while recording the battle on the server and then allowing that to be replayed based on the killmail tag. The only issue would be the amount of storage space required to record every battle in every system on the off chance someone would want to replay one of them someday which would probably require funding of a plex per view in storage space and server load. |

They've done it with alliance tournament and people could make replays with the data points, so it should be possible to be done if CCP were to allow export of that type of data.

It will never happen unless you or someone else happens to be FRAPSing the fight. The memory it would take to record all of New Eden at every moment and keep it on file would be stupid ridiculous large. Star Citizen has a better chance of happening before 2025... which won't. |
