It seems to take a long time and doesn't sell for that much...

Then don't do it.
Who needs to salvage level 3 or 4 missions. You don't need to collect enough parts in 7-8 missions to build a rig that will sell for 10-25M.
Course its not worth it to have additional features and power to your ships that you can't get anywhere else either <-----------> Keiron: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=427556&page=2

Well, 10-25 mil in 7-8 missions is only like 2-3 mil per mission, which considering how long it takes in proportion to the mission doesn't seem to be worth it. If I complete a mission in an hour, it often take 20-30 mins to loot and salvage..maybe I'm slow. I've not actually built any rigs with my salvage yet, it seems all the rigs require some part I don't have or don't have enough of..not sure which rigs I should build either.

He is being ironic.. For you to take max returning of lv3/4 missions salvage is a must do.
After finish the mission bookmark the cans, pick a salvaging ship and then salvage. It is worth it. If you don't want to bother..contact me ingame...i would do that as long i keep the parts ;)
Cheers

Depends how effective you are killing stuff. If looting/salvaging starts to take more time than doing the mission in first place then for sure it's job best suited for semiafk alt as doing it yourself would be waste of time.
Say - if you for example already have CNR with faction/T2 fittings then most likely you will make less isk salvaging than chaining missions for bounties / LP. But then again, you can always get some n00b in destroyer who is happy to salvage / loot your missions and even willing to share some of his profits from it ;)

Salvaging is very quick if you are setup correctly. I personally use a Destroyer with 3 Salvage Rigs, 6 salvagers, and 2 tractor beams. I tow a jettisoned can with one tractor and salvage with the other. I can clear out a room as fast as my friends or my main character can finish the room off.
Collectively salvage from one area will leave you short for parts on a particular rig. Normally most rig parts need to be collected from several different areas or from certain NPC types. Why my corp has people mission LVL 4 agents in Amarr, Gallente, Caldari, and Minmatar space. Each area yields different salvage. We collectively make several mil per day off our salvage parts from constructing rigs. Any form of easy residual income is worth it, trust me.

I have nanophoon for salvaging with 4x tractor 4x salvager and MWD. So I would say it's not an issue of using 'bad setup' for salvaging, but issue, that I can earn more in same time doing missions than salvaging, as looting/salvaging mission takes me usually approx 1.5 more time than doing mission in first place.
Then again I'm using T2 fitted CNR to run my missions - not as uber as I would like but it gets job done fairly effectively and so running missions is better isk/hour for me than salvaging. It's not like you usually do those missions to enoy them but to get isk for your other activities.
If you are doing level 3's or level 4's with non optimal setup then I'm sure there is quite good possibility that salvaging and looting missions is reasonable.

You'll be surpirsed how hard it is to find someone to come do that. Almost every misision i run I ask local if anyone salvaging and 99% of the time there is the pin-dropping reply. I even went as far as add two or three guys who supposedly WERE doing it to my friend list and guess what, they are never on.
With this last patch where you don't have to empty wrecks, I might dust off my alt with his destroyer and start picking parts again. Just soo much work and not enough time. I fly my ship casuse I like to shoot at NPCs and enjoy missions.
Maybe I need a new corp..?

Find someone like me to do the looting and salvaging for you while you are actually doing the mission. It takes very little time with a dedicated ship and the right skills starting ebfore the mission is even over. I do this for various people when I am available and everyone makes a little more.

I used to be very efficient at salvaging doing it faster without rigs, then some of my friends with. Calculating, the returns per hour were more than unsatisfying. So i quit salvaging... but i didnt quit looting - some of the loot can be worth quite some money, and you dont wanna miss that. I keep two tractor beams on my ship to loot while missioning, and find that i almost cant feel the slowdown, while i get all the loot - even if you reprocess the loot (all junk) it's still well worth it for me.
Now about taking someone to tag along - this is a money sink. First - read the loot stuff. You think that they'll actualy give that item to you? Second - how can u be sure that they will pay you for doing it? Third (the main reason this is a money sink) - they get half of all of the bounties in the mission. Who is paying who again?
I was doing salvaging at start for a good friend of mine. He said i could have all the loot (there were some few milion worth parts), am gonna recieve the bounties, and all i gotta do is salvage and get the parts to him. I think he was at gain that time, but then the prices of parts were worth something, unlike now.

Sansha missions are about the only ones worth salvaging on a regular basis.

Aha! Thanks so much for that. I managed to confuse myself last night, that after looting a mission I had a couple of cans floating in space. I think I must have salavged them, and I guess the loot can is left behind.
You know, I kinda miss the old "O" loot cans!
My looting tip ... I take my Minmatar destroyer (sorry, I forget the name!), 4 tractors, 4 salvagers, AB, other slots cap rechargers. When hold is full drop a can and empty your hold into it. Rinse and repeat. Then go back in a hauler and pick up the cans you dropped.
I bought a rig BPO for about 400k, and every so often I build a rig from parts and sell it for about 15 mill.
No massive income, but is it just me who gets a glowy feeling when I log in and find my wallet has gone up because someone has bought my stuff?
