Hi, Today is the day... Today I finish training Caldari Industry 3 and will be able to finally pilot that hauler I bought some days ago thinking I was ready for it. I went straight for this model without even touching the Badger I model. I still mine with a Bantam and want to go into the whole jet mining thing.
Taking into account that I just finished the trial and started with the real deal. What sort of modules and extras would you fit out a starting Badger II with? Tractor beam? Afterburner? extended cargo space, shields....
What would you use?
Thanks in advance

Cargo expanders and giant secure containers are the way to go. I'm pretty new to it myself but I bought a Mamoth and copied the setup from Halada's mining guide (basically as many expanders and GSCs as you can fit) and that seems to be suiting me fine. I've actually stopped mining in my bantam and started doing combat missions in a kessy while I save up the cash for an Osprey as the amount I can haul in the ship far outstrips the amount i can mine in the frig.

First thing - Welcome to EVE!
I'm still using a Badger 2 myself, fitted this way for solo jet can mining pickups
Hi Slots: 1 x small tractor beam, 1 x salvager
Med. Slots: 1 afterburner (cruiser size), 1 medium shield booster, the rest shield hardeners
Low Slots: the best cargo expanders you can afford
Cargo Hold: as many giant secure containers as will fit
The tractor beam is nice if you have the skill, you can reel in can(s) and wrecks quickly. Looting and salvaging the wrecks periodically from your mining session is very worthwhile.
Use shield hardeners that are strongest against what the rats in your region shoot. If in doubt, use 2 invulnerability fields. Alternatively, you might also try fitting a shield booster amplifier in one slot, or a cap booster with a couple of decent sized charges in it.
While mining, especially solo, there is no reason to have anything in lows except the best cargo expanders you can possibly afford. The fewer trips you make in a hauler during mining, the more isk you get for your time.
Good Luck out there, ~Tut

Bookmark your cans before you bring out the hauler. Warp directly to the cans, this puts you about 2.5km away. You can close this distance, fill your ship, and start aligning to warp out before most rats even have a chance to lock on to you. I don't even bother with hardeners. A sensor booster might be useful to target containers faster to use that tractor beam... haulers take a long time to target things.

This is very helpfull but I have seen there are so many versions of each module and its not the first time I go and buy stuff that later on I can not fix for all sorts of reasons, CPU, etc, etc...Could you be a "bit" more precise? I swear its not lazyness, its just overwhelming right now and depressing at the same time.
Originally by: Tutsunucann Hi Slots: 1 x small tractor beam, 1 x salvager
I thought this would be an easy choice...there are like two thousand versions of each
Quote: Med. Slots: 1 afterburner (cruiser size), 1 medium shield booster, the rest shield hardeners
Same thing, so many different types to get dizy
Quote: Low Slots: the best cargo expanders you can afford
Which ones?

The variations of modules don't stop them from all doing basically the same thing. Show Info on the module you're interested in, then have a look at the attributes tab to see exactly how it does. You'll see that there isn't much variation between them - e.g. the standard "Expanded Cargohold I" gives you 17.5% more cargo space whereas the "Mark I Modified SS Expanded Cargo" gives you 20% more cargo space. It's up to you to decide whether the extra you pay for the second module is worth the extra 2.5% cargo space.
Just do this for every module - choose the best price/performance point for you personally.

Did you actually check? There's actually only one of these two - Small Tractor Beam I and Salvager I. That's it...

Thanks for that heads up.
I bought the salvager, the tractor beam and the books to learn how to use them eventually
Which of those afterburners would be good for this ship? Shield booster...could one be pointed out? Same thing with the hardeners...I just do not want to throw my little cash away with the wrong choice.
Cargo expanders are basically the same just the name changes to some fancy new ones and little difference, right? I mean...if I do not own the millons required for the "big" ones the cheaper ones would still fit with me "just" loosing perhaps 3% bonus one over the other?
Sensor booster...any one in mind?
shield booster amplifier cap booster?
Sorry for this....

Industrials take a 10mn afterburner (or MWD, but they don't really have much cap...)
I don't typically worry about tank on my industrial. You are NOT going to be able to fit a tank that will allow you to survive serious aggro. Moral, do not fly your industrial where it may be shot at; if someone is shooting at you, get the heck out of there! (If you're really worried about low-sec, and don't need all the cargo space of the expanded cargohold modules, mount warp core stabs. What, it's not like you're shooting BACK, right? But even that won't help you against a serious camp. ;p)

At this time my idea is to hide and mine like a coward in high sec.
One day in the future I might grow hair on my chest for the big boys game but for the foreseable future I would stay empire high sec.

There are loads of modules, but once broken down there arent that many choice.
The easiest way is to find the basic one you want.
So 10mn Afterburner I info it, and click variations
The 10mm afterburner I is the basic module Then you have tech I named (Y-S8........)
Tech II
Storyline
Faction
Deadspace
As you go down the list in each section the attributes of that module increase relative to the 10mn afterburner This can be, fitting requirements, activation cost (cap), speed boost, duration, etc etc
That make it any easier?
The learning curve on eve is huge. Best way to learn is ask questions, we were all new once. :)

I am new as well, what I do is pull up the info screens for a few of the items I am looking for then click-n-drag them next to each other, makes it tonnes easier to compare stats.

There's a compare button.
Go into show info, then to the variations tab, you'll see the compare button.
This is the easiest way I've found in-game for comparing module variations. Cheers Baka ______________________ Have a Skill in training every second of every day and never let your bank balance sink below your skill points. |

Congrats!
I got my badger 2 yesterday. Very nice ship. I fitted 3x cargo expander, giving it 9600 m3 of space. Now its time to get some hauling contracts :)

I started my first solo mining thing...went and bought two Giant Secure containers and after some back and forth to get organitzed I finally went to my favourite 0.8 mining belt, had some problems dropping the container as it had to be 5000 meters from the nearest asteroid. Since I had anchoring I began getting happy about the prospects.
So...I go back to station switch to my little Bantam and out I go to the container spot.
As I pick my massive scordite asteroid and turn on the lasers I felt this "presence" behind me...sure enough there was a Badger moving up to me. I thought "Ha!" I got a good password for my container.
Ooops...The Badger snaches up my Giant secure container and off he goes with it (empty).
I was so amused at getting robbed for the first time that I shought the culprit up on local and we went into a nice conversation...To make a long story short the thieve gave me back enough isks to buy a new container and the emotional public listners thre Isks my way as they felt bad about my n00b experience. Great community...at the end we were all laughting and giving tips each other.
What surprised me is that apparently I had totally forgotten to anchor that can (thought it was an automatic thing) but even if I had remembered apparently I can not anchor on high sec space. So, I would have lost that container anyhow.
So what good are secure containers in high sec space? anyone can come and take the whole container home, repakage it and sell it for its market price.

I think you can only anchore in 0.7 and below.
U jetticon the can, right click and select anchor
Once anchored set password and sorted
The lights on them change from red to green once anchored. or is it green to red? Either way.
And yeah, weirdest community ever, a pirate will happily blow you up, but is also very likely to give you tips on how to avoid the same situation again. as long as you are nice. :) -----------------------------------------------

Don't use the GSC's to anchor and mine in to, use them strictly to expand your cargo space in your hauler. (They take up 3000 but hold 3900 inside.)
Mine into a standard jetcan.
Bring the hauler up, fill the GSC's and any remaining cargo hold space from the jetcan and head back to the station.
I find it helpful to arrange the GSC windows to be small and on top of each other, not tabbed, so I can get ore into them all quickly and keep moving.
If you have trouble with ore theives, move to another system. Note that a packaged frigate will fit inside of a GSC, so you don't have to make two trips to get all your gear to your new mining spot, at least until you move up to Cruisers. Repackaging voids the insurance policy, but mining frigates are cheap.
