Well, first post so here goes. I've been playing for about 6 weeks and have never left Empire space. I've spent my time mission running and mining, I am also a member of a nice friendly Corporation.
Now for my dilemma, I've read and heard about 0.0 space and mentally I view as somewhere populated by the bogeyman with asteroids coated in gold, scary yet profitable. I've lost some ships to pirates in Empire space (largely through my own stupidity and carelessness), but the safety of it is growing increasingly comfortable. I can easily believe that the longer I stay there the less likely I will be to even attempt to head into 0.0 space.
So, the dilemma. I am quite decided that I am going to head into 0.0 soon (next couple of days), certainly not to stay but just to experience it a tiny bit and to remove the slight mental block I have about it. Unfortunately however, I know very little about what I am planning to do. Do I head in with the best ship I can on the off chance that I can stick around for a while and do something vaguely useful/profitable, or do I take something cheap that I don't care about? I've read about NBSI and NRDS but I have no idea what they mean.
I suppose that what I am after is some information, either in terms of a thread or if someone would be kind enough to mail me. (And yes, I do realise that I may be setting myself up for a fall there).
Well, thanks for reading my ramble.
kind regards and safe flying,

Id say jump in a shuttle first and just go for a look around. That way if you do end up being attacked then its not going to be a great loss

Always use the map to check for podkills, claims the area, etc. When in doubt, just send an alt in in a rookie ship to enjoy the view or to get podded.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say its not the best idea to go there with the best ship and mods that you have as pirates tend to prey on characters with BC`s etc that have not been in the game for long, so keep it nice and safe at home

Anyone who don't have you or your corp/alliance set to riendly will hunt you down and kill you.
That may sound scary, but it's realy what makes it all fun. =)
Don't expect to be able to handle the rats out there just yet. Learn how to move around out there and how to avoid the people hunting you, before you bring anything expencive out there.
Best thing to do as someone totaly new to 0.0 would be get a gang of people in frigs and go hunt other people to kill. You will learn alot from that.
Have fun!

IF, they operate Not Blue Shot It. IAC alliance for example (and my own) operates Not Red Dont Shoot. You will be safer in their space, however follow their rules.

OK:
NBSI means Not Blue Shoot It. In other words, if someone isn't marked as being an ally or in your corp, then you can kill them
NRDS means Not Red Don't Shoot. Which basically means that all those people who are neither red (enemies) nor blue (allies) are NOT seen as fair targets for attacking.
i would say that if you are looking for a way into 0.0 then consider NRDS first. I live in NRDS and although there are pirates and gatecamps and ore thieves and so on (which is what makes it fun) you are still pretty safe to pootle through systems just taking a look. NRDS space is usually owned by fiercely anti-pirate alliances who get together to hunt down pirates and make the space safer, so there can be easier trade and stuff.
My tips would be... - If you are in a belt mining/ratting and someone warps in, warp out... best to be safe than sorry. Also best to be aligned with a warpable object than floating around - Don't take a ship you care about that much - GO!

When I first started playing eve about a year ago or so I had this whole "oOoOoOo ahhhhh" thing about 0.0, as if it were some magical place where only the seriously tough dared enter and the second you crosses the threshold every manner of killer was there ready and waiting to blow up mu much beloved ship.
Finally made my first trip to 0.0 maybe 20days into the game with a buddy of mine I met whilst ratting in an anti-pirated low-sec. 2 Caracals and tons of ammo, ran some spawns, found our tanks and such utterly sucked (And apparently my Caracal must have REALLY sucked back then as I can now NPC BS rats in a Caracal easily), met a guy in local, was all well and good. Rather nice actually, member of the one of the alliances just out for a casual stroll.
About 30min in....OUT OF NOWHERE comes a 13 man gang of Destroyers and Frigates, they choose my friend as he's older than me...PvP ensues...We manage to kill 4 of them, friend is almost dead...Kill 2 more...Friend is dead..I kill 1 more...Friend is podded..I kill rest minus 1 destroyer (Looking back on it,wish I had podded them, course never thought of it at the time)..Chase the destroyer..he gets away.
Few days later, I join a corp in the Freelancer alliance and get to participate in a Deklein war a few weeks later (Summer 06'). Killed much, ran in 150 man fleets, learned more about EvE in 2 months than most do in 2 years, made tons of isk, lost tons of isk.
Overall...had fun.
Course now I live in Stain for fun (Don't make this your first foray into 0.0, trust me on this one), am in Frege for Fleet&Gang Ops, oh...and I'm a -9.2 (Means I kill nubs for fun..or anyone else).

Thank you all for the information. I'll certainly be heading in tonight or tomorrow (in something I don't care about losing).

Your fear of 0.0 is exactly what makes it so much fun! In Empire Space you don't worry that much about warping into a belt or jumping through a gate as you feel safe.
In 0.0 you can be constantly on edge as even the simple act of undocking can lead you into trouble! In 0.0 you have to think more, and for me, that's what makes it great to be here. 0.0 is also where the benefits of being in a corp REALLY come into their own.
Try it! You'll love it! But as said before, don't go flying in with your best ship. Get a cheap frigate and have a look.
Enjoy!
