I started station trading a few weeks ago with capital i'd built up running missions. I don't really know a huge amount about trade in EvE but the player driven economy has always interested the number cruncher in me. I played with a few different modules and hulls to differing degrees of success but eventually found a few cheapy ones and one or two high value hulls. Did well on a Navy Dominix before noticing Bhaalgorns had a nice wide margin and had been both sold and bought once or twice over the past few days, a rare purchase but a great payoff when it happened thought i Well.. to cut a long story short when i edited the buy order this morning i failed to check the decimal had entered properly Literally a second after i confirmed the update my wallet flashed a big red number and it dawned on me what had happened a 245 Million ISK buy order had become a 2.4 Billion ISK buy order. I bought 1 Bhaalgorn for the price of 10 and my wallet went from 10 digits to about 200 Million ISK..
This isn't a complaint thread, rather the coming of a lesson i had always been aware could happen. I think it's something all newcomers must go through but man am i salty it happened on the Bhaalgorn
I'll post this in the new players forum too as a warning to others like me but i thought you trade people might enjoy my misfortune from a closer perspective.
Hats off to the guy who sold me the golden Bhaalgorn, i'll be back... soon.. ish
[EDIT] and sorry for inflating the daily price of Bhaalgorns in Rens this morning |

It happens glad it hasnt deterred you though it will of course set you back a bit for now, keep up the trading if its what you enjoy and hopefully that is the one time you make a mistake like that. |

These "fat finger" mistakes happen more often than you might think. With some luck you'll be on the receiving end someday. My biggest gain was from someone who put up a Jump Freighter for 7m instead of 7Bn with me having the top buy order in the market.
My most pleasurable experience in this regard was the result of direct market PvP. I was flipping Freighters that day and controlled most of the active market orders. Someone tried to sell a Fenris and was almost immediately undercut by me by 0.01 ISK. Now it got interesting. He started lowering his sell offer in 1m intervals, with myself always undercutting him by 0.01 ISK, mostly within seconds of his order. Apparently he got angry with me and started to lower his sell offer in 10m intervals. I continued to undercut him by 0.01 ISK. Considering that my profit margin was big enough to make a profit even by selling to buy orders, I didn't care how low he got. And all the recent buy orders were mine anyway. Suddenly my wallet flashed and his sell order vanished from the market. Got the Fenris for 130m (or so) instead of 1.3 Bn. Made my day.

It really happens to everyone, not just beginners. My biggest gaffe so far was 400 mil ISK.
As a safety, I always siphon some of my money over to my alt. You can set up a rule for yourself, for instance every time your wallet has more than what you will need the next few days, put half of it on an alt until you need it.

Thanks everyone for your moral support
I did actually message the guy asking if he might see his way to refunding me 1Bil of the 2.4Bil i lost, seeing as it was pretty much my entire trade startup.. but he has not seen fit to compromise... which is fair
Love this game.
Back to mission grinding til i can get another lump saved. |

When setting up sell orders, I always check the % above or below average. You can easily tell if something is amiss. When updating orders, I always check the total ISK change. It has saved me many times (mostly from pushing a wrong number at the beginning).
My friend... he's not as careful as I am, but he's learning to be. He's only lost us about 200M. Like others have said, it happens to everyone.
May the profits guide you.
May the market bless you and keep you;
May the market make its opportunities shine upon you and be profitable to you;
May the market lift up its margins upon you and grant you ISK.

Worst I've done was selling 5 Ishkurs for 2.4m each (fair price being 24m at that time).

Worst I done was listing something with a zero to much, and paying more taxes on the item as the initial profit margin.

Just remember to allways petition it if it's a ''decent fuckup''.Sometimes you can get it back.

Ummm.. I get the feeling typing a way longer number than you were supposed to isn't going to class as a "decent" one do you think it's even worth a petition?
I'm back up 19,000,000 ISK after missioning yesterday evening, plus the little bit i had left over from "the terrible event" so i should be back on top in about 23 years . This game really knows how to stomp on your cookie and make you ask for more

i be surprised if CCP smile upon you for this one unfortunately although there might be a possibility if you outline how new you are n stuff, as iv mentioned i doubt it though since this was not a fault of CCP or a glitch. I once did a simalar thing and lost just over a billion, which like you was most of my total ISK.
Since you have not begged and showed great attitude to this game i have sent you 20mil, which i know is not great amount but i hope it will help you get back to your feet.

Ummm i think you made an error Have returned the extra and will pay back the 20,000,000 as soon as i'm back to my target. That 20 Million means pretty much an entire day / evening of missioning for me so it's actually a huge help and i really appreciate it, and as said i'll pay you back as soon as i recover |

CCP will *not* reimburse your wallet if your money has enriched another player.
They might reimburse in cases where you have set up ridiculous sell orders that cost you many millions in broker fees without another player having been involved.

Dont worry about it. Everyone has a story of how they lost isk on a miss click.
I remember when someone put up a bunch of Dreads that they had just made for 1.6 million isk.

Well, I'll tell you: you are not alone.
You love EvE's player driven economy?
I started like you and from EvE trading I got interested in RL securities trading (futures, Forex, indexes and so on).
Guess what? We, in the real life markets, typo the numbers in the orders too.
And like you, all it takes is a "comma" to potentially lose months or years of hard work! This is real money we talk about, money you need to pay bills and feed the family.
There's a common workaround that works both in RL and in EvE though: work on a small enough account, so that you can still trade but if you typo you just lose the small account and not the big stash of money you made. In EvE, send ISK to an alt and keep it there. When you need fresh money you just send it on demand.
This should fix most of these fat finger isses you could get.

Yeah sorry i did mean to send the 200mil i just wrote 20mil as a sort of joke, guess irony isn't coming through correctly..
That said you did send the "extra" back so maybe karma will sort you out and the guy will sort you out too ;) |

I consider myself lucky, but who knows what awaits me...
My losses from my mistakes: 1 Billion ISK. - Sold PLEX for a few million...
My gains: ~30 Billion ISK. 20 BIllion from free Injectors, 2 free Rorquals, one Archon and few smaller items. By free I mean Million instead of BIllion ISK
So yeah, people make mistakes quite often. I leaned to click "tab" to add separator to the digits and check if the value is correct, also I keep an eye on the average regional price, and that saved me many times.
My Free PLEX giveaway was my valuable lesson. Don't worry, in time you will earn your ISK back from someone else's mistake.

My biggest and first loss was selling a Nestor for 70mil when they were selling at 700mil. However i contacted the guy who i sold it to and explained my dumbness. To my surprise he was very kind to refund 500mil. So that was very valuable lesson to me and thanks to that guy's kindness not so costly one. |

Lost 5 bil on my trading alt with 1 mistake.
Though a few months ago they added warning message asking you if you are sure, if price has 50% difference on market average. You abviously clicked yes to that warning message? Or the average price for your product was f****d up, so warning was not generated. |
