Hi guys I need some advice, I know absolutely nothing about turrets, and have barely any gunnery skills.
I am going to haul for my friend in a badger mark 2. He mines in a 0.6 sector that has Sansha pirates in it. Now, I want to fit something on to help kill the pesky things. What I need to know is, am I better off with a small railgun or a small projectile turret? As these are teh only things I can use. And what ammo would be best to use against the Sansha?
Thanks in advance,
TC.

Well since the hauler doesn't have any bonuses for either weapon it is just a matter of taste.. As Caldari you have hybrid weapons as part of the startup package. Projectiles are the racial weapon for Minmatar but has some advantages over railguns.
Railguns: Medium rate of fire, fairly good range. Uses cap aswell as ammo to fire, decent damage, decent tracking.
Artillery: Slow rate of fire, uses no cap to fire, good range, good damage, not as good tracking as the railguns.
I'd say, go with the weapon that you have the most skillpoints in of the two.

Well, Sansha's are most vulnerable to EM/thermal damage. All hybrid ammo (the stuff that goes in railguns) does thermal/kinetic damage, while projectile ammo does all sorts of combinations, some with EM and some with thermal but none with both.
So of the choices presented, there's no clear winner really. If you have a couple of guns of each type and some of the appropriate ammo, try them out yourself and see what works best. For projectile ammo, you might find EMP or Phased Plasma useful, while for hybrid ammo you may as well stick with antimatter as it does the most damage (but at the shortest range).

As its only for a hauler to provide a little extra anti-sansha damage, I'd say this is one of the few times where a laser would probably be the right choice. Fit and forget, no ammo to remember and they do the right kind of damage for Sanshas which will probably make up for the lack of skills you'll have in them in the first place. Just a couple of levels would probably do the trick nicely and only take you an hour or so of training.
Having said all that, with only 1 turret, I doubt you'll notice much difference whatever you use.

All the above is true-especially about only having 1 turret - but I have a Minnie & a Caldari & I really can't handle the Minnie guns (projectile) anymore, far too short for my liking. They are ofcourse suited to a fast moving Frig or AF that gets in close.Caldari get bonus' for Railguns & a 125 mm firing hybrid small lead (+ 60 %) or Tungsten (+40%)would work well in that situation.

Laser would be perfect for that situation.
You're not gonna be doing much damage so I'm not sure its worth it.

I've managed to take out the two NPC rats with my Iteron III and a rail-gun. Happened while I was solo mining in 0.5 space and had brought the hauler in to pick up the ore. There were 4 rats and I had to warp out after getting 2 of them and before they got me. Shield booster was working overtime and my cap was getting a little low, so I had to split.
I had to go get my destroyer with some guns and salvage gear to clean up the other two and salvage the wrecks. It did give me some satisfaction to take 2 of them out with a hauler though. I got the other two with the Destroyer and then cleaned the wrecks for a decent amount of salvage.
BTW - they were Serpentis rats and my gunnery skills aren't great.

How about fitting some smartbombs?I know, " Argh, Smartbombs in Empire space!! Dangerous!!", but you can add a couple of them, they do more damage then a single gun, even though you have to get close. Againts frig rats they are tremendous. With a decent tank you don't have to worry much. When hauling I always have this setup, and it's a blast to see those pesky rats blown up by an Industrial!
