All, I follow the territorial map and have seen some massive shifts as of late. Can anyone please tell me how accurate it is. I have also seen the influence map, but that one doesn't make much sense to me. Any thoughts?

How does the influence map not make much sense?
Its just an automated map based on sovereignty. Its pretty accurate from what I've seen, and doesn't need to be manually updated.

Yeah, the influence map is the one I look at, personally

Okay, I guess I have heard someone mention that before. But the thing is that having sovereignty doesn't mean you "control" that space. I guess that is what I am trying to understand. Is all that blue true?

Think the influence map is pretty accurate - think it is totally unbiased (if that is possible)

Edited by: BossNova on 09/04/2007 19:22:27 Um, it's very easy to have trouble understanding the influence map. What color a particular pixel is depends on the inverse of the square distance from all claimed systems. It also depends on the sovereignty of all systems it's connected to, no matter the distance. It's difficult to grasp that Jita is influenced by BOB's sovereignty in JV1V, for example, but it is.
It is rather interesting, but I would personally prefer influence to only be defined at systems rather than at every pixel of the map. Influence then would spread through jumps only. Space would still be colored to facilitate visuals though: simply put a buffer around each system to be colored whatever the neighboring systems' sovereign alliance is colored. If multiple alliances contest the neighbors, color the buffer a mixture (background plus shaded lines).
One question that I have, for example, is whether this UNL influence map's calculation of distance is 2D or 3D. The galaxy is actually three-dimensional, and as we all know, because flattening the map distorts certain distances relative to others, is that taken into account when calculating inverse-square distances?
Edit: One thing I don't think most people realize about the influence map: It displays an arbitrary thing called influence, not sovereignty. So for example, BOB could have sovereignty in a Fade system and still not get a piece of blue on that part of the map because of the proximity of D2 sovereign systems. It's like Civ4's cultural borders, except the city is in this case the system, and therefore a tiny, tiny dot whose color nobody notices.

Edited by: Tercano Nuruva on 09/04/2007 19:35:24 BossNova, your question, and several other useful tidbits, are available in the discussion thread for the map in question. There is a link to that thread near the link to the map.
It is well worth reading (even through all the crud), and it describes exactly what it does and doesn't show, including (mostly) how it does it.
Joshua's map is nice, showing political borders and warzones (Update it already!), and the Influence map is updated more often, impartial and accurate (discussions regarding 2D/3D space aside).
It would be well worth using both maps at all times.
EDIT: Spelt your name wrong, sorry about that

At first I was put off by the EVE Influence Map, I thought it looked a bit rubbish.
However, I am pleased to say its the only map I check, accruate (as accurate as possible anyway) and updated regually. It gets my stamp of approval.

Stupid question, but didn't we have three maps? Josh, Influence and one of the goons?

Josh's map is currently worthless.
Not only did he get his April Fool's joke a week late, he left it up
He couldn't have failed at more if he'd been on Pop Idol.

1) April fools edition on April fools would be too obvious. 2) If you take it down people cant see it. 3) People are still falling for it -----
